Two Years aner the Eelam War: The Flames of liberation .

Two years back. on 18 May 2009 the Sri Lankan army claimed to have killed Vellupillai Prabhakaran. the leader of L TIE, along with hundreds of his comrades. The next day in the Sri Lankan parliament ajubilant Rajapakse declared victory in the Eelam War IV. This was the day, two years back, when the Eelam Tamils Jost their hard-fought freedom at the hands of the fascist and expansionist Sri Lanka. This week the Tamils in Eelam and outside remember the heroic sacrifice of the sons and daughters of Eelam who laid down their lives fighting the armed forces of the chauvinist Sri Lankan ruling classes. Braving threats, intimidation and harassment from the Sri Lankan armed forces and intelligence, the people of Eelampaid homage to thosewho have fallen in the decades-long struggle for national liberation. They reiterated that it is the people of Tamil Eelam alone who have the mandate to chose their destiny, denouncing and warning against any'negotiated settlement' of the issue which compromises with the historical realities. The people have stated that any secret deal or confidential talk with the Sri Lankan state by those who claim to represent the Eelam Tamils will not be acceptable. The 'solution' only lies in the recognition of the historical reality of Tamil Eelam, i.e., its right to exist as a free and independent national state. .
The imustice. oppression and discrimination of the Eelam TamiJs by the Sinhala chauvinist ruling classes of Sri Lanka has a long history that 10es back many centuries. The genocidal murder of Tamils in the first five months of 2009 in the last phase of the war was one of the most extensive and brutal phases of this national oppression. In the last days of the war alone, more than 40,000 Tamils-including combatanr-and non-combatants -were slaughtered by the marauding Sri Lankan army and air force. As the 'international community' watched , -.~hence, cluster bombs and chemical weapons were unleashed on the entire population. Houses, schools, hospitals, ambulances, civilian shelters, and even No Fire Zones were bombed with impunity. By the time the war was declared over, almost the entire Tam11 population of the north and east was uprooted, their lives and property was destroyedI and were forcefully confined in concentration camps which the Sri Lankan state calls 'refugee camps'. Even conservative estimates put the number of displaced people to be above 3.5 lakhs. A large part of them are still not allowed to return to their villages, most of which have been ravaged and ruined beyond recognition Eelam has been transformed into a mammoth prison-house by the occupation army of the Sri Lankan state. Here any form of dissent and articulation of political demand is strictly prohibited. The aim is to enslave the entire nation, and to kill the very hope of a free homeland. By forcing them into utter misery, the Sri Lankan state expects the Eelam Tamils to give up their aspiration for liberation, to abandon their dream of Eelam as a mere illusion, and to accept the present condition as their immutable fate. .
Livmg under the shadow of fascist repression, experiencing the terror unleashed by the Sri Lankan state. and deeply aware of the historic oppression of their nation. it is the Eelam Tamils more than anyone else who seek the punishment of the perpetrators-the Sri Lankan ruling classes and its mercenary army. They deserve the severest of reprisal and punishment for their crimes. The question however 1s what should they be punished for? For 'crimes against humanity', 'war crimes', 'intemationaJ crimes', 'violation of human rights', flouting the rules of 'Geneva Convention', etc.? Or, for trying to wipe out a whole nation fighting for their inalienable right to self determination and national liberation? Here lies the difference between the perspective of the peoples' movements and that of the International Human Rights industry/NGOs promoted by the imperialist camp. It is in the name of humanism, humanitarian intervention, and the so-called crimes against humanity that Imperialism and its faithful lackeys such as the comprador ruling classes of Sri Lanka commit national oppression. Not for nothing that the Sri Lankan state called its war on Eelam a 'humanitarian war to liberate the people of the Northern Province'. This is how the warmongers sell their wars, and the international weapons industry, its wares. This is the language in which the 'internationally recognised bodies' like the United Nations (UN), NATO and the European Union wages war on peoples' movements and organisations. No wonder the imperialist countries and their 'recognised legal bodies' like UN spends millions of dollars every year to promote the discourse of 'human rights' or 'crimes against humanity' by funding thousands of human rights organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations. In the 'conflict zones' they protect the interest of the forces of oppression by accusing and persecuting the oppressed people, their leaders and their organisations, who dare to rise up against imperialism and its lackeys, while silently or vocally approving the acts of the oppressors. In the name of 'conflict resolution' I they seek to take away the oppressed peoples' right to fight back. .
Any talk of 'humanity' and 'humanism' In a world divided into oppressor and oppressed classes, or oppressor and .
oppressed nations, is nothing but a sham. It is not in the name of 'humanism' that oppressed nations demand the right to self-.
determination. It is not in the name of 'human rights' that oppressed people seek liberation. The right of every oppressed nation to self .

even the UN was forced to recognise under pressure from the tidal wave of anti-colonial and anti-imperialist liberation struggles in the .

Is our identity our institution, passport, pan card, belief. religion, caste. mind or even our body? We have so many identifications that it sometimes becomes difficult to recognise which is our original identity. Pause for a moment and think do we actually have these many personalities or it is mere lack of knowledge or illusion or ignorance that makes us think in this W?Y· It is really strange to know that our identity is changing. Change in personality defeats the notion of identity because if we try to perceive, identity is something which has to be specific, should always hold true, and remains unchanged after any transfonnatlon. This definition holds true irrespective of the subject in which the term identity is dealt with. This then raises the obvious question what our real .
identity is? It is in fact a million dollar question. There are two views to answer the same question. First, material sciences or material theories that are based on direct perception and inductive knowledge. These definitions usually fail to answer atl the questions and do not give an understandable p1cture pertaining to ·identity' because they arc confined to external environment which is nothing but matter. Matter is anything which is inactive, limited and temporary. That's why all our senses which are nothing but products of matter are limited -can see, feel, smell, hear and touch only in a range. .
The alternative to material science is spiritual science. We instantly become sceptical on hearing the term ·spiritual·. This is our biggest folly because one certainly needs to taste honey to know its sweetness. Any speculation won't suffice. The identity crisis occurs because we are not empowered with the real knowledge of the self We tend to identify ourselves with our designations, positions, or the state of being. All these portfolios keep on changing. We tend to associate our identification with something or the other. overlooking the fact that all the positions are ours but this is not what we essentially are. In a similar fashion, we find ourselves one with the body. Just like we are not our hands but our hands belong to us, this body, made up of matter belongs to us. It is due to misidentification of considering body as the self that we are surrounded by an ocean of problems, tensions, frustration and mental breakdowns which reaches its heights when someone dear to us passes away. .
We, having a higher consciousness should then ponder; who was there who passed away? If the body was the self, it's still there! It is the soul that passes away. This knowledge of self or the soul is the base ofspiritual science, knowing which the air .

becomes clear and everything seems so simple in life. This is our real identity. We are spirit souls, indestructible, unborn, etemal, unchangeable and immutable~ beyond the concept of matter; that pervades the material body through consciousness. All our relations to people and material things are important due to the presence of soul. As soon as the soul leaves any living entity, that relation subsides. So it is the soul which is more important around which everything should be centred. .
Those who are in full knowledge of the bodily conception of soul and who know that bodily desires are the results of being influenced by the illusion, do not become addicted to the body and its pleasure. They know that just as the fire which burns and illuminates, is different from firewood which is burnt to give illumination; similarly the soul, the seer within the body, is separate from the material body. .
The planet where we live does not allow us to be isolated like islands. One lesson, this school of life on this planet forces us to learn, is that when we come together willingly to communicate with a positive purpose or to pray together and to unite for the good of the whole, then harmony and peace can exist. Unless and tmtil v.e make this, the centre ofour existence, world peace and harmony will remain a Utopian world because it is essentially this unity that brings forth the spiritual vibration emanating from the Supreme. This vibration is of spiritual love which is not based on bodily relations or mutual attraction but is necessarily one in spirit. It is then we all v.'ill realise that even though we look so different on the platform of body. language, religion, caste, etc.. we are all alike and expansion of the same energy. This is the real oneness. real unity in diversity arising from our real identity. .
We need to realise how similar we are in order to expand our hearts and hands to others we may have previously rejected. This is how love and understanding will dissolve boundaries that keep us stifled as a society and individuals and keep us far from entering higher dimensions of consciousness. A lack of love for us reflects lack of Jove for Godhead. We are not our beliefs, religions, castes, identity proofs. institutions, minds or bodies. We are all divine souls on a wondrous journey. It is essentially this unity between us with Godhead as the centre that can give us the real happiness and satisfaction we search everywhere and in everyone but fai I to achieve. .
We, absorbed in bodily consciousness believe in ·survival of the fittest' and thus do not worry how \Ve hann others in this rat race to ·cat. drink and be merry.' Claiming our forefathers to be apes, the origin of this beautiful planet to be a big bang, we cannot imagine ourselves to be more than a bunch of chemicals or atoms colliding with one another both inside and outside. Such a blunt, blind, superficial outlook renders life meaningless. making the world purposeless which is neither useful to us nor to others. We, the youth need to think twice is this what it is? Is .

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts' Chinese art collection is one of the oldest in North America. Conceived in the early 20th century to provide a window on an exotic and mysterious world, the collection and its display aimed to educate the public in the appreciation of foreign aesthetics, even if biased by a colonialist misperception of China as a monolithic entity. A number of weathy Montrealers started collecting all things Asian in the early 1900s when, owing to the collapse of the Qing dynasty, Chinese antiques suddenly arrived on the North American market. Sir William Van Horne, Lord Strathcona, Mabel Molson, and F. Cleveland Morgan became important collectors and then donors, shaping the Museum's collection for decades to come.
The terms coined by early connoisseurs in the West to define Chinese art - one of the most longstanding artistic productions in the world - often stressed continuity and unity over change and diversity. Objects were at first interpreted as timeless and immutable in function. However, most were on the contrary constantly put in various sacred and profane uses, and cherished in a wide variety of contexts by different people. Today's display of the collection highlights three aspects of this multiple functionality. First comes "Art of the Tomb" with objects originally meant to accompany the dead but later prized in court settings. Next, "Act for Life" includes utensils and artifacts valued by the living but sometimes entombed with their users. And last, "Art for the Temple" presents art conceived for religious devotion.

The Gulf states have a past, and they will have a future. The contours of that future are legible in this Slanted issue!
