Salute to the Immigrants Series - going back into the archives from my trip to Ellis Island in January of 2014 - this photo is in the area that the wall on the right is inscribed with names of some of the immigrants passing through (see the next photo in the timeline for a frontal view of the inscribed wall)

Ellis Island, a piece of land made almost entirely from the contents of what was excavated beneath New York for the subway system, was the gateway for over 12 million immigrants to the US from 1892 until 1954. During the early years, the majority (over10 million) of the immigrants departed immediately from the rail station in nearby New Jersey for points across the US primarily to establish farm communities. The remaining number stayed in the New York metro area. Early immigrants were typically from northern and western Europe and came for economic opportunity and were more eagerly welcomed because of the need for labor in a rapidly expanding economy. As the years went by, the proportion shifted to be of more diverse ethnicities and to be people more likely to be those escaping oppression, persecution, and violence—and with it came less acceptance. After the Immigration Act of 1924, almost everyone passing through Ellis Island was escaping something and it became known as the “Island of Tears”. Ellis Island is now part of the US Park Service and accessed from either Lower Manhattan as part of the Liberty/Ellis Island ferry trip or from Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

Rally For Refugees & Immigrants. Feb 4, 2017

Internationally acclaimed writer and poet Khalil Gibran (1883-1931), known to most Americans as the author of The Prophet, was born in northern Lebanon near reserves of ancient cedar trees. His family immigrated to Boston in 1895, when many immigrants from the former Ottoman territories of the eastern Mediterranean resettled in the U.S. It was in Greenwich Village—where he lived from 1910 to 1931—that his career flourished. This talk focused on Gibran’s life in the Village where he composed many of his writings, as well as the institutions with which Gibran was associated.

The Schaefer Law Firm helps people with the immigration process. Simply put, we help future Americans become citizens by helping them navigate the immigration process.

We help people who need the assistance of an immigration lawyer for adjustment of status green card applications, immigration waivers (I601 hardship waivers, I601A unlawful presence waivers, J1 waivers and nonimmigrant waivers), family-based immigration or marriage-based immigration (spouse immigrant visas and K1 fiance visas).

We also offer application review services for people who prefer to complete their immigration application on their own but want the extra confidence of having an immigration lawyer review the application before it is submitted to the government.
