During our day in port at Key West, Mike and I visited Fort East Martello Museum (3501 S. Roosevelt Blvd.). The fort dates back to the Civil War era, and today houses a museum operated by the Key West Art & Historical Society.
Among the museum's exhibits is one dedicated Cuban immigration and refugees. Several nearby informational placards provided details on the type refugee raft -- known as a ''chug'' -- displayed here:
The Refugee Chug
Between Christmas and New Year's Day, 2011, 19 Cuban refugees, 17 men and two women, crammed themselves into a tiny boat and survived treacherous winter waters in the open sea to land on an island off Saddlebunch Keys, where they hid, afraid to show themselves. Authorities picked them up before dawn on New Year's Day, carried them to safety, and towed their chug to the boat ramp on Shark Key.
The chug had no more than 100 square feet into which to fit 19 adults, a tiny diesel engine, clothing, food, and water. One small sponson, to which they might cling should they capsize, was tucked to one side.
Constructed of pieces of raw wood and metal, one gunnel had warped badly. However, screws attaching keel to frame had been sealed with globs of fiberglass, and held well. The single propeller had been scavenged within hours, so it was impossible to imagine how refugees had managed to steer their craft.
The Refugee Chug stood within line of sight for several days, and made our world seem uncomfortably small. It reminded us that persons desperate for those things we take for granted live very close to us indeed. The chug kept the hard questions before us. What price life? What price hope?
A smaller placard provided the following information:
In 2005, Benjamin Bruce photographed these Cuban ''Chugs'' in the Marquesas Keys. The primitive vessels traveled at least 90 miles to take their passengers to the USA. The refugees were taken to Key West and permitted to stay under the Federal ''Wet-Foot, Dry-Food'' immigration policy.
The blue sign on the wall translates loosely as:
Please, the last person leaving Cuba, turn off the lights.

About 3000 people gathered in Powderhorn Park to stand in solidarity with immigrants and refugees. The protesters spoke against Donald Trump's immigration ban and the increasing militarization at the US-Mexico border. After a brief rally in the park, they marched through south Minneapolis on Lake Street.
