Special thanks to Kenneth R Anderson
Joe Ciardiello
1990s
Directory tear sheet, 8.375" x 11"
I saw Joe's work for the first time Sept. 1974 when he did a caricature for Doug G. and Noë G's fledgling mag. Joe hadn't fully developed his own style yet, and his illustration struck me as a so-so Alan Cober or Jack Unruh knock-off. Boy, was I wrong, or boy, has he developed. This sample comes from about 20 years later, with a very NYC subject for Joe. His style is now instantly recognizable, and he does regular spots for The New York Times Sunday Book Review. He's terrific.
But within weeks, College Monthly folded, Joe's November issue art never ran, and he (and we) didn't get paid. Perhaps this belated appreciation will serve as minor recompense.

Patrick Jb Flynn Whom among us isn’t influenced by our predecessors? It’s a little thing called history, a subject that most Americans fail miserably. I always saw Joe’s art as an amalgam of the best illustrators of that time, Milton Glazer, fused with Cober, Unruh, and the inimitable James Spanfeller.

Kenneth R Anderson @JC - I'm honored by your attention to my fb gallery.
@PJF - indeed. What I relate to now isn't even a style thing, per se. JC seems to draw naturally from his heart, a soulful quality I always admired in James McMullen's work.

@PJF, Spanfeller also graced the pages of this magazine due no doubt to the involvement of his AC accolytes. Kudos to you Ken for enshrining this.

I am posting this here specially today
in memory of my
Uncle Al...my mom's brother...who passed away
when I was only 10.
Today would have been his 85th birthday!
I find this fact VERY hard to to wrap my head around.
I remember him as a really cool young man...
an adventursome favorite uncle,
filled with wanderlust...
who had an avid love of trains, music,
and
the romance of the old west.
He was someone who trusted me
to play with his phenomenal model train set
all by myself
when
I was just a very little girl.
And, of course, he spoiled me like no other. :)
I remember taking a special train trip,
just he and I,
on the Milwaukee Road train Hiawatha route
to Milwaukee.
We sat in the domed train car,
had lunch in the "fancy smanchy" dining car,
and took pictures from
the special curved glass club car
at the end of the train.
What an adventure for my young imagination.
Now, as I reflect back I simply wonder
in astonishment...
where have all those years gone?
They have passed by in a blur...like colorful scenery
viewed out of an old train window...
unstoppable,
and, yet forever impressed in one's memory.
♥
So...today
let's celebrate those favorite family members,
those unforgettable experiences,
those bright, colorful impressions of our youth,
and
even those flips in our perspectives.
May these kinds of experiences
continue to enhance the chapters of our lives
and help our spirits bloom.
Happy Blooming Tuesday All! :)
♥

Doing some illos before I decide how to fully custom my Ashletina, sort of as a roadmap.

This evening I spent some time drawing on the iPad using Adobe Ideas and Procreate apps. The more I use the Adobe Ideas app the more I like it.
Back cover illo for Think Link! 1, a Link Wray tribute 10" EP from 1994 (sans text stuff). Link playin' it cool in the face of a hoodlum riot...
"Look at the man on the left,
now back to the right,
now back to the left,
now ... back to the right.
The man on the left is cool!!
the man on the right is tired.
I’m on a horse"
The Awesome [Rich] made his sketch from yesterday into a Vector image, Don’t I look awesome in toon!! I’m so honoured and proud of it that I’m gonna have it framed.
And I get to et to thank the man himself next week when I travel to London for a week.
We’re so pumped to win our first award of the year. Our mural illustration of Vancouver for CMPNY was selected for Applied Art’s 2018 Illustration Annual. Congrats to all the winners! Creative and brand direction by the talented Chris Zawada. Illustration and art direction by yours truly.
2-color screenprint illo (pink & blue, and when they overlap, a 3rd color, violet) of a girl blowing ghost bubbles. For my friend Zack Soto's new anthology zine "Studygroup" debuting at Stumptown Comics Fest 2010.
Illo for story about if there's any science behind weather folklore (i.e., "red sky in morning, sailors take warning" or the one about groundhogs predicting the length of winter).

For an article about people who review inane and pointless things that no one ever expects a level of quality from anyways.
My second fully digital illo. I´m planning to make these into an 8-page magazine for the book exhibition in Leipzig this march - I´m really digging working digitally now, so this will be at least this one project I´m going to do in this technique. I´m still very new to this, but it really grabbed me by the ears ;)
Illo for a seasonal appearance by the Danny Vacon/Matt Doherty party rock assault force, commissioned by the Calgary Folk Fest.
Nick Jr. Magazine has a marginal feature in their issues, so they commissioned me to create 27 little illustrations to accompany ideas for kids' pumpkins.

This seems like rather an odd tie-in to me.
I kind of wish they still made the tape printed with holiday designs. I wonder if they only produced it for Christmas, or if you could also get Easter Bunnies, etc. in season.
