A collection of stained glass windows from il Duomo, Milan.

Everything about the cathedral is stunningly impressive, but for me the beautiful windows are probably the most awesome feature.

Florence, Italy - March 23, 2018: Tourists gather on the cupola of Florence Cathedral at sunset.

An archive shot of Firenze, one of my favourite places in the world. I think that the Porta San Nicolo (the tower in the foreground) was one of the original gates in the wall of the old fortified city, dating back to the medieval wars with the neighbouring city-state of Siena. Wonderful landmarks beyond the torre include Il Bargello (prison), Il Duomo (the dome), Il Campanile (Giotto's wonderful bell-tower) and the beautiful church of Santa Croce.

View from Forte di Belvedere

As always with a subject as iconic as Florence Cathedral the challenge is to take something that is a bit different to the normal views you see but something that still retains the essential character of the subject. On that basis I'm pretty pleased with this shot of the campanile and duomo, particularly as there was the inevitable scaffolding covering some parts of the building.

From Wikipedia : "The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (English, "Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower") is the main church of Florence, Italy. Il Duomo di Firenze, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style to the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris.

The cathedral complex, located in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. The three buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the historic centre of Florence and are a major attraction to tourists visiting the region of Tuscany. The basilica is one of Italy's largest churches, and until development of new structural materials in the modern era, the dome was the largest in the world. It remains the largest brick dome ever constructed."

two views of a Renaissance masterpiece

We ended our trip to Florence, Italy by taking in the art of the Uffizi Gallery. Once through the museum, we walked to the Uffizi's rooftop terrace which offered one final view of this amazing city. Palazzo Vecchio stands on the right, but I thought it more appropriate to capture the Duomo standing tall as we had seen from so many vantage points throughout Florence.

Grazie Firenze~!

two views of a Renaissance masterpiece

We spent much of our time in Florence in orbit of the magnificent, Il Duomo. It is the single most impressive landmark I've ever seen.

What a view of beautiful Florence Italy. The Duomo in the centre and River Arno flowing peacefully through the city. A place to return.

Traveling in Italy meant plenty of churches, and I just can't help taking pictures of prayer candles when I see them. This one was inside Il Duomo, the main cathedral in Florence. Plus points for anyone who recognizes the quote!

A part of the marvelous view on the top of the the Cathedral in Milan...countless fences in repetition...

This is for the love of architecture and details.

Devoted to Thea ( www.flickr.com/photos/theadenja/ ) whose glorious fences have been a delight to the eye and a source of inspiration.

Happy fence Friday you all!

Il Duomo, Milan, Italy

The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore is the cathedral church (Duomo) of Florence, Italy. The basilica is notable for its dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, its exterior facing of polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white.

Filippo Brunelleschi's brains and Cosimo de' Medici's money helped complete the near-impossible task of building the basilica dome (finished in 1436). Even to this day, it remains the largest brick dome ever constructed.

Ended up blowing out the highlights while compensating for the backlighting. Oh well. Win some, lose some.

This really is one of the most spectacular cathedrals I have ever visited. There is so much beautiful artwork, sculpture and stunning stained glass that the building feels warm and inviting as well as awe inspiring.
