Die Jungfraubahn (JB) ist eine Zahnradbahn im Berner Oberland in der Schweiz. Sie führt
von der K.leinen S.cheidegg durch E.iger und M.önch bis aufs J.ungfraujoch, überwindet
auf einer L.änge von rund 9 Kilometer fast 1`400 H.öhenmeter und etwas mehr als 7
Kilometer der Strecke liegen im T.unnel.

Geschichte

Ab etwa 1860 gab es verschiedene Pläne für eine Bergbahn auf die J.ungfrau, die aber
alle aufgrund finanzieller Probleme scheiterten.
So entwarf 1870 der Nationalrat Friederich Seiler, am 16. Oktober 1889 Maurice Koechlin
und am 22. Oktober 1889 Alexander Trautweiler ein Projekt für eine Jungfraubahn.
Am 1. Juli 1890 stellt Eduard Locher ein Konzessionsgesuch für eine Jungfraubahn und
erhielt 1891 zusammen mit Koechlin eine B.aubewilligung für deren P.rojekt.
Die Ausführung kam aber nicht zustande. 1892 wurde die Konzession für eine E.igerbahn
erteilt, welche aber auch nie ausgeführt wurde.
Am 20. Dezember 1893 bewarb sich der Industrielle A.dolf G.uyer - Z.eller um eine
Konzession für eine Zahnradbahn, die an der Bahnstation der W.engernalpbahn (W.AB)
auf der K.leinen S.cheidegg beginnen und in einem langen T.unnel durch das M.assiv
von E.iger und M.önch bis hinauf auf den G.ipfel der J.ungfrau führen sollte.
Am 21. Dezember 1894 erteilte der B.undesrat diese Konzession.
G.uyer plante von Anfang an einen elektrischen Betrieb für die Jungfraubahn und sicherte
sich daher die W.asserrechte an beiden L.ütschinen und erhielt am 10. Juni 1896 die
Konzession zum Bau der K.raftwerke.

Bau

Am 27. Juli 1896 erfolgte der erste Spatenstich zum Bau der Jungfraubahn.
Trotz des Anschlusses an die W.engernalpbahn wählte man eine andere Spurweite
(1000 mm anstatt 800 mm), eine andere Zahnstange (System Strub anstelle S.ystem
R.iggenbach) und Drehstrom anstelle von Wechselstrom, da dieser mehr Leistung und
höhere Sicherheit versprach.
Die Bauarbeiten gingen nur mühsam voran. Am 19. September 1898 konnte der Betrieb
(u. a. mit einer Bergpredigt des Grindelwalder „Gletscherpfarrers“ Gottfried Strasser) auf der
im freien Gelände verlaufenden S.trecke von der S.tation Kleine S.cheidegg bis zur S.tation E.igergletscher am Fusse des E.iger eröffnet werden.
G.uyer - Z.eller sah vor, jedes Jahr eine weitere S.tation zu erreichen und diese so schnell
wie möglich in B.etrieb zu nehmen.

Nun begannen die S.prengarbeiten im T.unnel mit drei Schichten zu je acht Stunden, doch
kurz darauf am 26. Februar 1899 ereignete sich ein S.prengunglück, das sechs italienischen
A.rbeitern das L.eben kostete.
Am 7. März 1899 erfolgte der D.urchstich der provisorischen S.tation R.otstock, welche ab
2. August nur kurzzeitig bedient wurde.
Die Stationsanlagen sind heute grösstenteils abgebaut, aber eine T.ür führt ins Freie.
Am 7. März 1899 erreichte die Spitze der T.unnelbauer den vorgesehenen S.tandort der
S.tation E.igerwand. Am 3. April des gleichen Jahres starb in Z.ürich A.dolf G.uyer - Z.eller,
die treibende Kraft der Jungfraubahn.
G.uyer - Z.ellers S.öhne führten den Bau fort, aber erst am 28. Juni 1903 konnte der Betrieb
bis zur S.tation E.igerwand, inmitten der E.igernordwand dem V.erkehr übergeben werden.
Ab dann konnten die Reisenden von der T.errasse aus den Ausblick hinunter Richtung
G.rindelwald geniessen. Zwei Jahre später, am 25. Juli konnte die Strecke bis zur Halte-
stelle E.ismeer auf rund 3'160 m, auch K.allifirn genannt, mit einer wunderbaren Aussicht
über die G.letscher eröffnet werden, dem vorläufigen T.ouristenzentrum der Bahn.
Aufgrund knapp gewordener Finanzmittel sowie dem Tod von A.dolf G.uyer Z.eller wurden
die ursprünglichen Pläne abgeändert. Anstatt eines Halts unter dem M.önchsjoch und der
weiteren Strecke bis hinauf auf den G.ipfel der J.ungfrau wurde die Trasse so abgeändert,
dass das J.ungfraujoch die E.ndstation ist.
Am 15. November 1908 ereignete sich im Sprengstofflager bei der S.tation E.igerwand eine
E.xplosion, bei welcher 150 Kisten mit 30'000 kg Dynamit in die Luft flogen. Glücklicherweise
forderte das U.nglück keine O.pfer.
Auch Spannungen blieben nicht aus: Die Arbeiter opponierten gegen das Unternehmen und
streikten.
Am 21. Februar 1912 erfolgte der D.urchschlag in der S.tation J.ungfraujoch, und am
1. August 1912 wurde die S.tation mit 3'454 m als höchstgelegener B.ahnhof in E.uropa
eröffnet.
Die Baukosten betrugen statt der errechneten rund 10 Millionen 14,9 Millionen Franken.
Bemerkenswert ist, dass der im Jahr 1912 eröffnete Abschnitt E.ismeer - J.ungfraujoch
sowohl im A.dhäsionsbetrieb als auch im letzten Abschnitt kurz vor dem J.ungfraujoch
mit Z.ahnradbetrieb befahren wurde.
Daher mussten spezielle R.eibungs- und Z.ahnradlokomotiven beschafft werden. Erst 1951
stellte man die ganze S.trecke auf durchgehenden Z.ahnradbetrieb um, dies erleichterte die Betriebsführung ungemein.
