Das Gross Fiescherhorn ist mit 4'049m der höchste Gipfel der drei Fiescherhörner
in den Berner Alpen. Der Berg sendet nach N.ordwesten, O.sten und S.üdosten
ausgeprägte G.rate aus; auf dem w.est - ö.stlich verlaufenden H.auptkamm verläuft
die Grenze zwischen den Schweizer Kantonen Bern im Norden und Wallis im Süden.
Nach N.orden fällt eine 1`250 Meter hohe und etwa 4 Kilometer lange W.and, die
F.iescherwand, in den zerklüfteten G.letscher I.schmeer / E.ismeer hinab. Durch
seine außerordentliche Höhe und gute E.rreichbarkeit inmitten der Berner Alpen ist
das Horn ein bedeutender A.ussichtsberg, der im S.pätwinter auch im Rahmen von
S.kitouren oft begangen wird. Zuerst wurde das Gross Fiescherhorn am 23. Juli 1862
durch H. B. George, Christian Almer, Ulrich Kaufmann und Adolphus Warburton Moore
über den S-üdwestgrat bestiegen.

Lage und Umgebung

Das Gebiet um die Fiescherhörner ist vollständig von G.letschern umgeben. Im N.orden
erstreckt sich das I.schmeer / E.ismeer, im O.sten der W.alliser F.iescherfirn und im
S.üden und W.esten das E.wigschneefäld.
Benachbarte Berge sind im W.esten, getrennt durch das U.nders M.önschsjoch, auf
3`523 Metern Höhe gelegen, der 4`107 Meter hohe M.önch, unmittelbar benachbart
im O.sten liegt im G.ratverlauf der O.chs oder das K.leine F.iescherhorn, im S.üden,
getrennt durch den F.ieschersattel (VS - 3`923 m) das H.inter F.iescherhorn und weiter
K.leines und G.ross G.rünhorn mit 3`913 und 4`044 Metern Höhe. Der nächstgelegene
bedeutende O.rt ist im N.orden das etwa 8 Kilometer L.uftlinie entfernte G.rindelwald.

Erschliessung

Der W.eg der E.rstbesteiger des Jahres 1862 über den S.üdwestgrat ist heute
ungebräuchlich. Alle R.outen auf das Gross Fiescherhorn sind ernsthafte Hochtouren,
die nur mit entsprechender A.usrüstung und E.rfahrung begangen werden können.
Der heutige Normalweg (leichtester Anstieg) führt vom F.ieschersattel aus über den
erstmals 1871 begangenen S.üdostgrat. Als S.tützpunkte für diese Route eignen sich
die im S.üdosten gelegene F.insteraarhornhütte auf 3`048 Metern Höhe (Gehzeit von
hier 5½ Stunden über den Walliser F.iescherfirn), die im Süden gelegene K.onkordiahütte
auf 2`850 m und die westlich gelegene M.önchsjochhütte (VS - 3`627m), mit je bis sechs
Stunden Gehzeit.
Die Anstiege werden in der Literatur mit den Schwierigkeiten WS bis WS+ (Route über
das bis 50° geneigte E.wigschneefäld) in der S.AC - B.erg- und - H.ochtourenskala
angegeben. Außerordentlich schwierig sind alle Routen durch die nördliche F.iescherwand,
die zudem eine große E.is- und S.teinschlaggefahr aufweisen

Die Station Eismeer ist eine der zwei Aussichtspunkte / Haltesttellen im T.unnel der
J.ungfraubahn JB zwischen der S.tation E.igergletscher und dem J.ungfraujoch im

In haushohen Abbrüchen fliesst ein breiter E.isstrom des oberen Ischmeer / Eismeer
dem unteren G.rindelwaldgletscher zu. Umrahmt wird das Eismeer von den Alpengipfeln
W.etterhorn (BE - 3`701m) - S.chreckhorn (BE - 4`078m) - L.auteraarhorn (BE - 4`042m)
und dem grossen F.iescherhorn (BE/VS - 4`049m) und dem M.ittellegigrat gegen den
E.iger (BE - 3`970m)

Mitten in dieser Gletscherwelt konnte am 25. Juli 1905 die Aussichtsstation in 3`159m
Höhe in der S.üdwand des E.iger eröffnet werden. Die Station Eismeer blieb während
sieben Jahren E.ndstation der J.ungfraubahn, bevor 1912 das J.ungfraujoch erreicht
werden konnte.
Früher konnte von hier mit den Skiern nach G.rindelwald gefahren werden. Leider haben
sich die E.ismassen des unteren G.rindelwaldgletschers in den letzten Jahren dermassen
zurückgebildet dass diese Tour nur noch sehr schwer zu bewältigen ist.

Für mich persöhnlich ist die Station Eismeer der schönste Aussichtspunkt beim Besuch
des Jungfraujoch. Normalerweise hält der letzte Zug auf`s J.ungfraujoch des Tages bei
dieser Station nicht mehr an.

and the Station J.ungfraujoch / Top of Europe in the Switzerland.

In crashes houses a broad flowing ice the lower G.rindelwald g.lacier. Surrounded,
the Arctic Ocean by the Alpine peaks W.etterhorn (BE - 3 `701m) - S.chreckhorn
(BE - 4` 078m) - L.auteraarhorn (BE - 4 `042m) and the big F.iescherhorn
(BE / VS - 4` 049m), and against the M.ittellegi - ridge to the E.iger (BE - 3 `970m)
Right in the middle of this glacier world was on 25 July 1905 the lookout station at 3 `159m
altitude opened. The station remained Arctic Ocean during seven years terminus of the
J.ungfrau - R.ailway before in 1912 J.ungfraujoch was achieved.
Previously could from here with the skis to G.rindelwald driven. Unfortunately, the ice
masses of the lower G.rindelwald g.lacier in the last few years went back that this tour
just very difficult to cope.

For me, the station is the most beautiful view while visiting the J.ungfraujoch.

pixeltrash: Ha, now I get it. Just got the 26 in your profile wrong. If I remember right Cure happened the same year as Star Wars. I remember watching SW in the cinema and it was a blast. By that time I was 9 and listened to the musik my brother was playing. 60s & 70s and more Alice Cooper than is good for a little boy. With 11 I loved Kiss "the hardest band in the world" (maybe that happened due to Alice Cooper overload?) but it took 3 more years to get to the real thing: "new wave". We were pretty lucky since we had a real good new wave club going in our small town. Since then I have a strong faible for all kinds of electronic and/or darker kind of music. Yes indeed, very likely we share some new wave, goth, ebm history. I find it interesting that during the last years some pictures jumped at me and when I connected with the photographers very often they came from a similar background. There must be something in the visual esthetics which connects the goth minded.

Der Grindelwald - Fieschergletscher ist ein Gletscher in den Berner Alpen im Kanton
Bern in der Schweiz. Sein Teilabschnitt Oberes Eismeer ( Gemäss Karte Swisstopo
Obers Ischmeer ) ist namensgebend für die S.tation Eismeer der J.ungfraubahn.
Höchster Punkt des Gletschers ist der M.önch mit 4'107 m Höhe. Bei ungefähr 1'600 m
ist sein tiefster Punkt.
Er liegt südöstlich der Massive von E.iger und M.önch sowie nördlich des Verbindungs-
kammes von M.önch - M.assiv und F.iescherhorn - M.assiv. Im O.sten begrenzen P.faffe-
s.tecki und Z.äsenberg den Gletscher. Nach N.orden fliesst der Grindelwald - Fiescher-
gletscher in den U.nteren G.rindelwaldgletscher.
Er hat seinen Ursprung am G.ipfel des M.önchs und fliesst in n.ordöstlicher Richtung
zwischen W.alchergrat und E.iger - S.üdgrat hindurch. Im Anschluss geht die glatte
O.berfläche in einen zerklüfteten Gletscherbruch über.
Dieser Teil heisst Oberes Eismeer ( Gemäss Karte Swisstopo Obers Ischmeer ). An
dessen Ende fliesst von N.orden der C.hallifirn in den Fieschergletscher. Ab hier ist
der Gletscher zweigeteilt. Unterhalb des E.iger - M.ittellegigrates ist die Oberfläche relativ
geglättet, während auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite, unterhalb von W.alchergrat und
F.iescherwand die Zerklüftung anhält. Zwischen Z.äsenberg und „B.im g.andigen P.fad“
erreicht der Gletscher den U.nteren G.rindelwaldgletscher.
Ein Problem stellt die Namensgebung dar. Der Grindelwald - Fieschergletscher darf
nicht mit dem Fieschergletscher auf der S.üdostseite des F.iescherhorn - G.rünhorn-
M.assivs verwechselt werden. Dieser ist der richtige Fieschergletscher. Das Bundes-
amt für Landestopografie will aber auf absehbare Zeit den Grindelwald - Fiescher-
gletscher mit Eismeer bezeichnen

Summary
A school, built in 1891 and designed by Martin and Chamberlain for the Birmingham School Board.
Description
EXTERIOR: the south side has four large bays to the left, each of which is crowned by a gable. At ground floor level the walling is flush, but at first floor level there are projecting pilaster buttresses which have richly-moulded, terracotta gablets to their tops. They are set at either side of the windows, which are each divided by two mullions. Windows at ground and first floor levels have segmental heads, while those to the second floor have arched heads, extending into the gables, with terracotta decoration to the eaves. At right of this, and slightly recessed, is a bay with a doorway to the bottom and a series of small windows including two lancets to the top, which indicate a staircase inside the building. The east face has a similar large bay to those seen on the south front at right. To left of this are four-storeys of staircase windows. To the ridge behind is a square, wooden turret with pyramidal roof and weather vane.
The north front has blank walling to the left, with six-bays to the right of this which correspond to the hall inside the building. These have windows with cambered heads to the ground floor and taller windows above with one, prominent, transom and arched heads. Between these bays are wide buttresses with fluting to their corners and offsets. These terminate in gabled tops with open terracotta tracery and there is further terracotta ornament, including bosses, blind arcading to the top of the wall and an elaborate eaves cornice.
The east, or Milk Street front, which was the original entrance front and is now connected to the early-C21 college addition, has blank walling, save for clusters of four recessed lancets at first and second-floor levels, which light a staircase. At ground floor level is a single-storey, canted porch with a flat roof, which has an elaborate gabled porch to its right flank.
Above, and visible from all sides, is the ventilation tower which has a square lower body and an elaborate top stage, with bowed sides, polygonal turrets to the corners, and an arcaded parapet and cast-iron cresting to the top.
INTERIOR: the entrance from Milk Street gives onto a corridor with fire-proof vaulting that leads to a hall with an open-well staircase. This leads to the assembly hall at first floor level which has hammer beam roof trusses, supported on painted stone corbels. The south flank wall has a balcony landing supported on deep, cast-iron brackets, with panel tracery and pendant bosses. Doors throughout the building are largely to the original pattern, with glazing to the upper panels. Classrooms have vertical plank panelling below the dado, as do the passages and hall.
History
The Birmingham School Board was brought into being by the Elementary Education Act of 1870; the Act, which empowered school boards to create new schools and pay the fees of the poorest children, was largely the result of campaigning by the Birmingham-centred National Education League. By 1902, when the Education Act abolished school boards and passed the responsibility for education to local authorities, the Birmingham School Board had built fifty-two new schools, as well as the Board's offices. All but four of these schools were designed by the architectural practice Martin and Chamberlain - from 1900 Martin and Martin - appointed Architect to the Board in 1870.
John Henry Chamberlain (1831-83) and William Martin (1828-1900) formed the practice Martin and Chamberlain in 1864. Following the death of Chamberlain, Martin was joined by his son, Frederick William Martin (1859-1917), and the practice continued under the same name until the death of William Martin when the practice was renamed Martin and Martin. The board schools became focal points within each district, serving as symbols of municipal pride and civic achievement; Martin and Chamberlain created a house style for their schools, which were characterised by their red-brick construction, tall ventilation towers, proliferation of gables, and decorative use of tiles and terracotta, sometimes displaying naturalistic forms. Chamberlain believed that beautiful and well-planned school architecture might offer children some compensation for drab, cramped homes, and in 1894 the Pall Mall Gazette commented that, `In Birmingham you may generally recognise a Board School by its being the best building in the neighbourhood, with lofty towers which serve the utilitarian purpose of giving excellent ventilation, gabled windows, warm red bricks and stained glass, the best of the Birmingham Board Schools have quite an artistic finish'.
J. H. Chamberlain, the leading creative force within Martin and Chamberlain, was profoundly influenced by Ruskin and his promotion of Venetian Gothic; Chamberlain played a unique role in defining Birmingham's civic architecture during the 1860s and 1870s, helping shape the city's celebrated movement of social and artistic improvement. He designed a number of other important public buildings, including libraries, baths, and hospitals, but in setting the style for the board schools he made an especially significant and lasting contribution to Birmingham's built environment.
Frederick Martin, who took over much of the practice's design after Chamberlain's death, was responsible for a variety of public and commercial buildings, and housing, as well as the Board Schools. Martin developed the established mode of the schools' design, introducing a greater freedom in referencing historical styles and, as a leading practitioner of Birmingham's 'terracotta school', an increased use of terracotta.
The Floodgate Street School opened in 1891 and was designed to educate 1,115 children. The building is shown on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey map published in 1905. It is shown on a small site, bounded by Moore's Row, Milk Street and Floodgate Street with houses to the south. The 1927 OS map showed that the playground to the south of the building had expanded to include an area which was formerly built over. Floodgate Street School continued until 1939-40 when the building was taken over by St Michael's Roman Catholic School. It had become the annexe to Hall Green Technical College by 1982. The footprint of the school building has not changed since it was first built, except that houses which formerly stood to the south have been demolished and a new extension has been built on their site to form the Digbeth Centre of South Birmingham College. This is attached to the former school building by a link at ground floor level which joins to the former Milk Street entrance of the school.
Reasons for Listing
The Listed Building, Digbeth Campus, South Birmingham College is listed at Grade II* for the following principal reasons:
* Architect: a handsome and striking school by Martin and Chamberlain, one of the leading architectural practices in late-Victorian Birmingham
* Architecture: the building uses the tight site on which it is constructed to great advantage, making a particular feature of its massing and especially lavish terracotta decoration.
* Intactness: the building is largely intact and has undergone minimal alteration to its original form.
* Historical: one of twenty-six surviving schools built by the Birmingham School Board, which together form one of the most important groups of board schools in the country.

Der Grindelwald - Fieschergletscher ist ein Gletscher in den Berner Alpen im Kanton
Bern in der Schweiz. Sein Teilabschnitt Oberes Eismeer ( Gemäss Karte Swisstopo
Obers Ischmeer ) ist namensgebend für die S.tation Eismeer der J.ungfraubahn.
Höchster Punkt des Gletschers ist der M.önch mit 4'107 m Höhe. Bei ungefähr 1'600 m
ist sein tiefster Punkt.
Er liegt südöstlich der Massive von E.iger und M.önch sowie nördlich des Verbindungs-
kammes von M.önch - M.assiv und F.iescherhorn - M.assiv. Im O.sten begrenzen P.faffe-
s.tecki und Z.äsenberg den Gletscher. Nach N.orden fliesst der Grindelwald - Fiescher-
gletscher in den U.nteren G.rindelwaldgletscher.
Er hat seinen Ursprung am G.ipfel des M.önchs und fliesst in n.ordöstlicher Richtung
zwischen W.alchergrat und E.iger - S.üdgrat hindurch. Im Anschluss geht die glatte
O.berfläche in einen zerklüfteten Gletscherbruch über.
Dieser Teil heisst Oberes Eismeer ( Gemäss Karte Swisstopo Obers Ischmeer ). An
dessen Ende fliesst von N.orden der C.hallifirn in den Fieschergletscher. Ab hier ist
der Gletscher zweigeteilt. Unterhalb des E.iger - M.ittellegigrates ist die Oberfläche relativ
geglättet, während auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite, unterhalb von W.alchergrat und
F.iescherwand die Zerklüftung anhält. Zwischen Z.äsenberg und „B.im g.andigen P.fad“
erreicht der Gletscher den U.nteren G.rindelwaldgletscher.
Ein Problem stellt die Namensgebung dar. Der Grindelwald - Fieschergletscher darf
nicht mit dem Fieschergletscher auf der S.üdostseite des F.iescherhorn - G.rünhorn-
M.assivs verwechselt werden. Dieser ist der richtige Fieschergletscher. Das Bundes-
amt für Landestopografie will aber auf absehbare Zeit den Grindelwald - Fiescher-
gletscher mit Eismeer bezeichnen

Mitten in dieser Gletscherwelt konnte am 25. Juli 1905 die Aussichtsstation in 3`159m
Höhe in der S.üdwand des E.iger eröffnet werden. Die Station Eismeer blieb während
sieben Jahren E.ndstation der J.ungfraubahn, bevor 1912 das J.ungfraujoch erreicht
werden konnte.
Früher konnte von hier mit den Skiern nach G.rindelwald gefahren werden. Leider haben
sich die E.ismassen des unteren G.rindelwaldgletschers in den letzten Jahren dermassen
zurückgebildet dass diese Tour nur noch sehr schwer zu bewältigen ist.

Für mich persöhnlich ist die Station Eismeer der schönste Aussichtspunkt beim Besuch

kammes von M.önch - M.assiv und F.iescherhorn - M.assiv. Im O.sten begrenzen P.faffe-
s.tecki und Z.äsenberg den Gletscher. Nach N.orden fliesst der Grindelwald - Fiescher-
gletscher in den U.nteren G.rindelwaldgletscher.
Er hat seinen Ursprung am G.ipfel des M.önchs und fliesst in n.ordöstlicher Richtung
zwischen W.alchergrat und E.iger - S.üdgrat hindurch. Im Anschluss geht die glatte
O.berfläche in einen zerklüfteten Gletscherbruch über.
Dieser Teil heisst Oberes Eismeer ( Gemäss Karte Swisstopo Obers Ischmeer ). An
dessen Ende fliesst von N.orden der C.hallifirn in den Fieschergletscher. Ab hier ist
der Gletscher zweigeteilt. Unterhalb des E.iger - M.ittellegigrates ist die Oberfläche relativ
geglättet, während auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite, unterhalb von W.alchergrat und
F.iescherwand die Zerklüftung anhält. Zwischen Z.äsenberg und „B.im g.andigen P.fad“
erreicht der Gletscher den U.nteren G.rindelwaldgletscher.
Ein Problem stellt die Namensgebung dar. Der Grindelwald - Fieschergletscher darf
nicht mit dem Fieschergletscher auf der S.üdostseite des F.iescherhorn - G.rünhorn-
M.assivs verwechselt werden. Dieser ist der richtige Fieschergletscher. Das Bundes-
amt für Landestopografie will aber auf absehbare Zeit den Grindelwald - Fiescher-
gletscher mit Eismeer bezeichnen

Die Station Eismeer ist eine der zwei Aussichtspunkte / Haltesttellen im T.unnel der
J.ungfraubahn JB zwischen der S.tation E.igergletscher und dem J.ungfraujoch im
Berner Oberland im Kanton Bern in der Schweiz.

Eismeer - Der Name dieser Station könnte nicht treffender sein

In haushohen Abbrüchen fliesst ein breiter E.isstrom des oberen Ischmeer / Eismeer
dem unteren G.rindelwaldgletscher zu. Umrahmt wird das Eismeer von den Alpengipfeln
W.etterhorn (BE - 3`701m) - S.chreckhorn (BE - 4`078m) - L.auteraarhorn (BE - 4`042m)
und dem grossen F.iescherhorn (BE/VS - 4`049m) und dem M.ittellegigrat gegen den
E.iger (BE - 3`970m)

Mitten in dieser Gletscherwelt konnte am 25. Juli 1905 die Aussichtsstation in 3`159m
Höhe in der S.üdwand des E.iger eröffnet werden. Die Station Eismeer blieb während
sieben Jahren E.ndstation der J.ungfraubahn, bevor 1912 das J.ungfraujoch erreicht
werden konnte.
Früher konnte von hier mit den Skiern nach G.rindelwald gefahren werden. Leider haben
sich die E.ismassen des unteren G.rindelwaldgletschers in den letzten Jahren dermassen
zurückgebildet dass diese Tour nur noch sehr schwer zu bewältigen ist.

Für mich persöhnlich ist die Station Eismeer der schönste Aussichtspunkt beim Besuch
des Jungfraujoch. Normalerweise hält der letzte Zug auf`s J.ungfraujoch des Tages bei
dieser Station nicht mehr an.

The Eisemeer Station is one of the two view points in the c.hunnel between E.igergletscher
and the Station J.ungfraujoch / Top of Europe in the Switzerland.

Eismeer => Arctic Ocean - The name of this station could not be more accurate.

In crashes houses a broad flowing ice the lower G.rindelwald g.lacier. Surrounded,
the Arctic Ocean by the Alpine peaks W.etterhorn (BE - 3 `701m) - S.chreckhorn
(BE - 4` 078m) - L.auteraarhorn (BE - 4 `042m) and the big F.iescherhorn
(BE / VS - 4` 049m), and against the M.ittellegi - ridge to the E.iger (BE - 3 `970m)
Right in the middle of this glacier world was on 25 July 1905 the lookout station at 3 `159m
altitude opened. The station remained Arctic Ocean during seven years terminus of the
J.ungfrau - R.ailway before in 1912 J.ungfraujoch was achieved.
Previously could from here with the skis to G.rindelwald driven. Unfortunately, the ice
masses of the lower G.rindelwald g.lacier in the last few years went back that this tour
just very difficult to cope.

For me, the station is the most beautiful view while visiting the J.ungfraujoch.
