Stabilized Maple Burl and Black, Gold, and White resin ice cream scoop handle.

The ice cream scoop was from Craft Supplies USA (www.woodturnerscatalog.com). The maple burl was from Worldwide Burl (@worldwide_burl on Instagram) stabilized in Cactus Juice (www.turntex.com).

I used a brass insert from Niles Bottle Stoppers (www.nilesbottlestoppers.com) inside the handle for the threaded scoop end to provide a long life to the assembly, allowing many removals for cleaning.

The resin: Alumilite Clear Slow colored with Wine Country Mica Black Pearl, Royal Gold, and Micro Pearl mixed with White Holo mica powders.

Finished by sanding to 1000 grit, polished with Yorkshire Grit microfine polishing paste, and final finished with Stadium Pen Blanks Magic Juice.

The stand was laser-cut from 3 mm basswood plywood.

Ice cream scoop handle turned from a piece of triple dye stabilized maple burl and cast with resin.

Resin is Alumilite Clear Slow colored with Wine Country Mica Powder Black Pearl, Macro Red Color Shift, Macro Blue Color Shift, and Macro Violet Color Shift mica powders.

The piece was finished by sanding to 600 grit, polishing with Yorkshire Grit (brown) and Yorkshire Grit Micro-fine polishing paste. Finish was CA (Cyanoacrylate) glue applied in multiple coats and sanded back with 400 grit paper. Final polish was Stadium Pen Blanks Magic Juice.

The subsequent pictures show additional views of the Ice Cream Scoop handle. Ice cream scoop came from Craft Supplies USA. Burl was from Worldwide Burl.

Stabilized Maple Burl and clear resin with orange infusion ice cream scoop handle. This was a handle from Jake Thompson that he cast with Alumilite Clear Slow clear resin infused with a small amount of Eye Candy Pigments orange mica powder. Jake casts blanks like this and demonstrated pouring techniques on his weekly Saturday YouTube show, “Saturday Morning Cartoons with Jake and Jamie” at 10:00 CST. The clear resin with the wisp of coloring really sets this handle off.

Stabilized Pine and Resin Pizza Cutter & Ice Cream Scoop

These handles were cast earlier in the year from dye stabilized pine obtained from old bleachers that our area Lutheran High School replaced. The plan is to provide these to the 2024 Gala Auction in April 2024. The stands were cut from the recycled bleacher wood and clear-coated.

The pizza cutter handle was dye stabilized with Alumilite Blue dye and Turntex Emerald Green and Fireball Red. After stabilizing, it was cast with Alumilite Clear Slow tinted with PolyColor Dark Red Metallic, and Wine Country Mica Ocean Blue and Interference Red mica powders.

The ice cream scoop handle was pine dye stabilized with Turntex Emerald Green, Purple Haze, and Electric Blue. After stabilizing, it was cast with Alumilite Clear Slow tinted with Wine Country Mica Rose’, Royal Gold, and Interference Violet mica powders.

Finish was accomplished by sanding to 1200 grit, polishing with Yorkshire Grit microfine and finished with Mylands Melamine Lacquer. The lacquer was allowed to cure and then sanded back. In this case, the sanding went through the finish, so several coats of CA glue were used as a final finish and sanded back. The finish was then polished with Stadium Pen Blanks Magic Juice.

The stands were made from bleacher wood and cut out with the laser. After assembly, the stands were clear-coated.

Additional views of the ice cream scoop and handle. The wisp of color in the casting with the burl spikes remaining visible really makes this an interesting casting.

Human hand holding ice cream scoop also called disher. Decorative background.

I made several pieces for our area Lutheran High School (Arizona Lutheran Academy) annual Gala to be auctioned to raise funds for the high school. I have previously posted the turned pieces. To complete those pieces for the Gala, I needed to make stands and some presentation boxes for them. The following items were provided:

- Pizza cutter with a resin and dye stabilized pine handle

- Ice cream scoop with a resin and dye stabilized pine handle

- Two coffee scoops with myrtle handles

These pictures show the boxes that were made for the items and the stands for the turned pieces.

The dye stabilized pine and stands all came from wood from the high school bleachers after the gym was remodeled a couple of years ago.
