01/08/2010 - OK, so Barb tagged me today so I'm supposed to tell you 10 things about myself and post a self-portrait. Here's the portrait taken as a reflection in the back of an ice-cream scoop. And 10 facts about me:

1. I love to read, especially old private-eye mysteries from the 1940's. Favorite authors include Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Walter Mosley and Jim Thompson among others.

2. Favorite TV Show is The Avengers. British TV in the 1960's was fantastic!

3. I walk to work every day. Half and hour each way. Even in snow. And up hill all the way home!

4. I collect Disney paper. Mostly brochures and pamphlets from the early days of Walt Disney World in the 1970's.

5. I'm losing my hair, but couldn't care less. I used to have shoulder-length hair that was naturally curly, and dyed red.

6. I've attended the Canadian Grand Prix Formula One Race almost every year it's been on since the mid-seventies. Glad it's back this year!

7. I have a bro-friend. Yes, that's right, a bro-friend, who I go out shooting with, though we've been lazy over the holidays.

8. I'm a Montreal Expos fan, so now I'm a Washington Nationals fan, and don't mind cheering for the worst team in the league. They'll be better this year!

9. My dream vacations over the next few years would be the Galapagos Islands, an African Safari, and to visit the five Disney Resorts around the world in one trip!

10. I've been married since 1998 to my best friend, Lori, who I can put to sleep by talking about the camera gear I want to invest in next.

Hope you enjoyed learning a bit about me!

Hey..its time to watch a slideshow of the House of the Death Set.

I enjoy squash and today I baked this one. I scoop out the seeds with an Ice-Cream Scoop.

Close up of a well-used icecream scoop. Controlling the reflections from the deliciously sexy surfaces was a challenge. The scoop was placed on a plastic folio cover 8 inches beneath a table with a white underside. Lighting was bounced off that underside surface. Focus was on the apex of the curve at the neck & horizon was positioned so the apex would not disappear into the bg. Maybe I'll do another with deeper dof ... this was at f/6.3 :)

This fun and colourful ice cream scoop will make dishing out that next scoop of your favourite sweet all the more enjoyable. The handle was turned from acrylic and the scoop is in a chrome and gold finish.

I tried a variety of techniques - alcohol, polishing, lasering the bare metal - to prepare the metal prior to Cermark application but the mark still didn't turn out as uniform as I had hoped.

Laser etched using Cermark. The initial settings for the Cermark didn't work on this unknown metal. I sanded the scoop down and re-marked it after making some tests on the underside of the scoop. In comparing to the final scoop I think the sanded look actually makes the mark stand out more. For Nemo Design (nemohq.com)

The shot that everybody puts on Instagram, months after it was novel, because I don't get to process my film too often these days :-P

Offset from the lower left is the ghost of the sanded-off mark.

Then I stuck the duffuser on the flash and tried to do everything the same--no setting were touched. Yeah, I know the background is dark, but it's brighter than the ceiling bounce shot and there were no lights on in the entry which is like a little hallway. It aint art, but I got decent light where it looks okay. There is diffused light defining my face and even my shirt looks ok, and there is some light on the background. Imagine what I could do with some tweaking.

I was going to make an ice-cream but didn't have enough, so I only used the metal scoop used for making round ice-cream balls.
