New pics from an old kit.
While snooping around for picture material I recently found a reliable model kit source in Japan and was pleased to find that the Gunze Sangyo kits from the Dorvack OAV had been re-issued in 2007 by Aoshima, including kits/sets with added weaponry and new Hyper Dorvack kits. Since I LOVE the Dorvack PA's, I ordered a bunch of them, and this is now the first of MANY Dorvack PA's that I have in store... more to come soon! ;)
This Nove Commander PA suit is in original OAV equipment and livery. The kit itself is easy to assemble, but (still) shares the flaws that were designed into it 25 years ago. Main problem are the legs, which make assembly and painting very difficult, and while the parts are molded very well, making them fit needs putty and creativity.
This specific PA-36 was built right out of the box. Only enhancements are opened air intakes for the jet pack on both shoulders (instead of just painting them black), a modified air hose on the right shoulder (the original molded part was seperated in 3 pieces and covered in paper tissue, to give it a flexible and "insulated" look), an antenna on the left shoulder and a transparent lens in the laser's nozzle, which had been painted in neon pink from the back.
Additionally, the laser's power supply hoses were added manually. Since the references indicate that these 3 cables actually lead into the air intake on the left shoulder(?), I decided to add extra connections on both weapon and PA hull that would house them.
As mentioned above, the livery is original OAV. I wanted to build an "original", but still "realistic" model, so I built a fusion of the bright OAV colors with a weathered look from military duty.
The choice of basic colors was tricky, since I only had the assembly/paint guide, few reference pictures and no Gunze Sangyo colors.
After consulting the paint guide and considering many different red tones, ranging from a deep burgundy through wine red to bright red, I finally settled on a tone called Insignia Red (FS 31136, actually Humbrol 153). Even though it is still a bright and light color, this red has little yellow, so that it appears on larger areas a bit dull - I did not want a fire engine!
What appears white is actually a very light grey tone (RAL 7035, Humbrol 196). Pure white would have definitively been too bright, and the painting guide actually claims that it was a mixed color of a bluish grey with white (?).
The upper legs were painted in Pale Grey (Humbrol 40), a grey tone that has little blue hue, and the joints were painted in Aluminium Metallic (Humbrol 56). The visor was laid out with silver and covered with transparent deep blue translucent paint.
After a wash with black ink and some dry painting with shades of the basic colors, the whole kit received a matte finish - except for the joints and the upper legs, which were coated with semi-matte varnish.
The decals are original, and, in contrast to the Gunze Sangyo decals of former times, the new Aoshima material can actually be used! Only problem (on any PA) is the spheric surface on the knees, where the plain decals can hardly be applied at all. Here, decal softener and delicate knife cuts helped - but you can still recognize folds... :(
Finally, the PA kit was carefully weathered with silver and received some dirt and dust weathering with acryllic paint in sienna brown, black and ochre. In real life, the kit looks more weathered than on the pictures here. The light for the photograph makes it look brighter than it is in real life.
The diorama I used for the pictures is a 1:35 scale base that I built for a Gasaraki armor - which still waits to be started with... The pictures themselves were taken with a simple Kodak CX 7330 digital pocket camera.
