The chain link fence encircles a small dog park. I believe these hydrants have either been removed or are awaiting installation. I don’t exactly know why I’m attracted to clunky, oversized, plumbing. I find plumbing hardware like this so unattractive and lacking grace or appeal. I have studied industrial design a little and worked with engineering most of my career. What I see in heavy plumbing is concerns about economy, practicality and durability and almost nothing else. At the same time it is the rusty, crusty, clunkiness that I find so appealing.

The old hydrants are disappearing and will be replaced by newer ones.

I am chasing some of these old guys.

Taken for 52 Weeks for Dogs. Not to worry, he was left here for a second while I took his portrait.

At the end of our walk. Jake is showing off his new easy walk halter, thanks to WolfClub for suggesting this. It works pretty well. Jake has an encounter with the local fire hydrant. Not much time to work on dog photos, working on some mindfulness photography exercises.

All critiques very welcome. Low light end of the day so Jake is not in great focus. Oh well.. But he doesh ave some catch lights in his deep set dark eyes. I like the red, blue, green and white color flow, the curved road. But still rather mediocre image.

Found along a walk in Brookside, Mo. One of the funkiest hydrants ever!

A fire hydrant and a Vespa on a street in Soho, New York. What stuck me here are the similar colours of the Vespa and the fire hydrant.

Interesting wreath disposal.

Jersey City, New Jersey.

On the way to run errands one street lines with office parks had a golf ball sitting on top of every fire hydrant. There were about eight of them....I wonder why?

When you get up and out early because you heard there was an excellent example. And then oh joy. An engineer had just tested it.

This is an interesting photo because it suggests someplace else other than a modern US city. This is south Philadelphia in 1982 almost 26 years ago. Most likely 23rd Street or Grays Ferry Avenue near Bainbdridge during the 1982 Odunde Festival. Even more interesting is that when I shot this I was living in west Philadelphia and would travel to Center City and to South Philly to take photos, party and attend this event. Now, through an interesting unplanned set of circumstances I live blocks away from where this picture was taken. Behind that brick wall you see in the background once was an abandoned Naval facility. Now it's luxury condos behind that wall that start at $250,000 last time I checked. The Odunde festival is still held in this area through the upscaling and gentrification of the neighborhood. Hard to believe twenty-six years have gone by so fast!

I don't even remember taking this picture at all and it was never printed. I found it on a group of negatives that I made other prints from. This young lady from what I can piece together was eating salted sun-flower seeds and probably needed water to rinse away the saltiness. I like they way her hand with nails painted red is cupping the water to her mouth as she leans on the hydrant with a bag of half-eaten sunflower seeds in her hand. The water flowing from the hydrant and her hands is also interesting, and Philly wouldn't be Philly without the grunge and empty cans along the curb.

17/52 - 52 Weeks of 2014. Geometry

This is a bit of a revisit of an idea I did a while ago. Frankly, I had a hard time trying to figure out what to do for this week's theme. But there are several geometric shapes present in this top view of a fire hydrant.

The yellow fire hydrant is the focus of this subject. I love the color against the purple flowers. It would have been nice to have the flowers in focus, but perhaps next time.

A painted fire hydrant at a hill overlooking Boulder City and Lake Mead, Nevada. I wanted to unfasten it because it was already over 100F by the time I reached this point on my trip to Hoover Dam! Luckily, I had a lot of bottled water in the car.
