Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle', Hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae).
Red Butte Garden, Salt Lake City, Utah.
Linda, my wife, tells me this is a hydrangea, "Annabelle Lee", which is doing fine this year because of the cool spring.
At least that is the name I remember, from our annual Progress through the yard, re-introducing me to plants. SWMBO is the gardener, I dig as directed.
Hydrangea paniculata 'Tardiva' WW35 Panicle S4- (Chenaulfs nursery 1966) Panicle Hydrangea, Mature plant size: 8x10ft., white, USDA Hardiness Zone 3, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW28, In Garden Bed S4 for 9.3 YEARS (Lowes,). Planted in 2013.
Michael Dirr: ‘Tardiva’ extends the flowering season into late August and September (October and November on Nantucket). The inflorescences are a mixture of fertile and sterile flowers. Sterile flowers are composed of primarily 4 sepals. Depending on weather conditions (cooler), the sepals turn pinkish. Just developing inflorescences on 25 June 2003, at JC Raulston Arboretum. This selection has gained momentum in the nursery and landscape trades.
Hydrangea paniculata 'Tardiva' was introduced by Haworth-Booth from Chenaulfs nursery, and given an Award of Merit by the RHS in 1966. It is a “Big Box” item and one of the most popular Panicle hydrangeas in the US. It is a vigorous, upright deciduous shrub (or small tree) which grows 8-12' tall. Flowers are white, lightly tinged with pink/cream with age. Flowers on new wood and prunning should be done prior to new growth. 'Tardiva' is similar to H. Paniculata 'Floribunda'. I have kept this trimmed small. Severe trim in 2021.
2022 note: Basically cut to ground level last year. Seems to be recovering.

common names Hydrangea and Hortensia) is a genus of about 70 to 75 species of flowering plants native to southern and eastern Asia (China, Japan, Korea, the Himalayas, and Indonesia) and North and South America. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably China, Japan, and Korea. Most are shrubs 1 to 3 meters tall, but some are small trees, and others lianas reaching up to 30 metres by climbing up trees. They can be either deciduous or evergreen, though the widely cultivated temperate species are all deciduous.
Having been introduced to the Azores Islands of Portugal, they are now very common there, particularly on Faial, which is known as the "blue island" due to the vast number of hydrangeas present on the island, Terceira, named the "lilac island" for hydrangeas of that colour, on Flores Island ("Island of Flowers") and São Miguel, named the "green island" for its floral biodiversity.
Species in the related genus Schizophragma, also in Hydrangeaceae, are also often known as hydrangeas. Schizophragma hydrangeoides and Hydrangea petiolaris are both commonly known as climbing hydrangeas.
There are two flower arrangements in hydrangeas. Mophead flowers are large round flowerheads resembling pom-poms or, as the name implies, the head of a mop. In contrast, lacecap flowers bear round, flat flowerheads with a center core of subdued, fertile flowers surrounded by outer rings of showy, sterile flowers. The flowers of some rhododendrons can appear similar to those of some hydrangeas, but Rhododendron (including azalea) is in a different order.
