A hydrangea at the Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Garden (Purchase, New York)—August 6, 2009

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blaumeise' is a stunning lacecap hydrangea known for its vibrant blue flowers and adaptability to various garden settings.

This variety features large, flat flower heads that can reach up to 9 inches (22 cm) across, with cobalt blue florets surrounding a central cluster of tiny fertile flowers. In alkaline soils, the flowers may turn a soft pink colour. The plant has coarsely toothed, glossy dark green leaves that frame the flowers.

'Blaumeise' thrives in partial shade but can tolerate full sun if the soil remains moist. It is best suited for rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils. The plant prefers acidic to neutral soil for optimal blue coloration. To maintain the blue hue, gardeners can add aluminum sulfate to the soil. Conversely, adding lime will shift the colour towards pink.

Ensure the soil is kept evenly moist, as this hydrangea is not drought-tolerant. Mulching around the base can help retain soil moisture and protect the roots.

Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth for the next season. Avoid heavy pruning in late autumn to protect the buds from frost damage.

Hydrangea at Trebah Gardens, Cornwall.

It is the high season of hydrangea blooms, and because of the Covid-19 shutdown, I've had more time to observe the day-to-day changes. What fascinates me most, besides the different stages of blooms, is the way one can alter the color of blooms from pink to blue and in-between. It all depends on the acidity or alkalinity of the soil, In fact, hydrangea blossoms are not flowers at all, but specialized sepals, or leaves, They act like nature's litmus paper, although the colors are opposite: pink for plants grown in alkaline soil, and blue for those in acidic soil. it is not unusual to see these opposing colors in the same plant, depending on the varying acidity of the soil the roots feed from.

This bloom of Hydrangea turned sideways... beautiful and delicate.

I gently brought it in.

The flower spoke to me of essence, the spine.

The blooms quite young.

With love to you and thank you for ALL your faves and comments, M, (* _ *)

Hydrangea, commonly named the hortensia, is a genus of over 75 species of flowering plants native to Asia and the Americas. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably China, Korea, and Japan. Most are shrubs 1–3 m (3 ft 3 in – 9 ft 10 in) tall, but some are small trees, and others lianas reaching up to 30 m (100 ft) by climbing up trees. They can be either deciduous or evergreen, though the widely cultivated temperate species are all deciduous.

The Hydrangeas did very well this year, although in general the heads are smaller probably due to the hot summer.

Now some have been dried and form a lovely dash of colour in the room.

Hydrangea, the name, comes from the Greek words "hydro" or water, and "angeion," or vase = water vase, they prefer a lot of water.

A very ancient plant, found in fossils going back thousands of years.

Flower lovers will know that there is a flower language.

Every sentiment is expressed in one form or another by delicate blooms.

Of course, even the experts disagree on the "true meaning" of many flowers and most have different meanings to different people.

So, while all flowers convey thoughtfulness and love, a gift of flowers for a special someone will always create its own personal meaning, too.

一昨日の雨で元気を増した紫陽花をみながら、「わざわざ北鎌倉まで行かなくても....」と思った週末でした。

Looking at the hydrangea that was rejuvenated by the rain the day before yesterday, I thought, "It's enough here without having to go all the way to Kita-Kamakura." It was such a weekend.

I planted three new hydrangeas this fall along the back fence and am looking forward to more color there next year.
