I'll shoot a high hood locomotive any time I can, even if the weather isn't cooperating.

So back in October I put together a bit of a mini-chase of the HH11 as they motored out of the yard, past Harris Tower here, and up on to the Hill Industrial Track to work the macaroni plant.

This GP38-2 is of the ex-Southern variety.

Finding a slot between the morning rush of intermodal trains is Florida East Coast Railway local 905 out of Bowden heading down to Dorena for a little work. They are southbound near about MP 35.8 on the Flagler Sub mainline curling toward the San Sebastian River trestle.

FEC 508 is an EMD GP38-2 built new for the road in Apr. 1978 and still adorned with the simplified blue dip scheme and classic large Hurricane logo. We'd shoot this job again passing almost the same spot northbound but from across the water later in the day. If you missed that one I posted a while back click here: flic.kr/p/2joc7EY

Light Hinckley local power in Fridley with the GN 400 "Hustle Muscle" - EMD SD45. Sun is setting but nice to see it out and running.

There's beauty in everything... even traffic 😳😜 Take a few seconds to appreciate what's in front of you especially during the rush that comes with this holiday season.

MNR's Houlton Local is a few miles outside of Oakfield as it kicks up snow with a GP38 leading an MP15. It was good but tough chase, with speeds sometimes reaching 35 MPH. The sound was great with the duo flying by us in notch 8. When the crew reached Oakfield they tied down train, parked the power, and went home in time for dinner and the game.

A duo of ex-KCS SD40-2's and an ex-UP SD40-2 lead a WLE manifest near Navarre Ohio towards Brewster Yard.

In the fading glow of a cold winter evening, CSX L134 races through Doswell, Virginia. The engineer has the EMDs wound up and humming as they pass the signals in Doswell heading for Acca yard in Richmond. Nothing better than vintage EMDs still earning their keep.

NYSW 3618, one of two SD45s left standing of the NYSWs original thirteen, has made its way back to the Southern Division. Here, the WS-4 utilizes the 3618 to pull one car out of 84 Lumber in Oakland before running to Butler and returning east.

Great Northern SD45 #400, "Hustle Muscle" leads the North Shore Scenic Railroad's weekly "Two Harbors Turn".

This particular excursion (as of 2025) operates once a week on Thursdays, while the "Duluth Zephyr" and "Pizza Express" run Fridays-Sundays.

GN 400 is paired with former Northern Pacific 245, which was also fired up and humming along on this diesel double-header. Naturally, a short chase was in order.

Seeing GN 400 run is like seeing an old friend, as it was 10 years ago it operated in Osceola, WI while on lease to MTM, where I volunteered at the time. The locomotive had an eventful decade since, getting a new 20-645 engine and being re-homed to Duluth. It doesn't operated much, but has seen regular service on most of LSRM's trains in June and now July.

Here the train departs the museum as it traditionally does by shoving out of the depot and onto the NSSR mainline.

I hope that all of the Hustle & Bustle of 2010 is now behind you.

And that each and everyone has a wonderful New Year.

Remember to take a moment to slow down, take a deep breath, and enjoy the world around you.

Can't wait to see what everyone has to share in 2011.

Thanks for your visits, comments and Flickr Friendship!

This is a location in my home state I've long meant to photograph but had never bothered to try until this day.

Amtrak's ex New Haven Railroad Northeast Corridor mainline slicing through the 'wilds' of rural South County (not an actual county just a colloquial name for this part of the state) is some of the fastest track on their system and also relatively inaccessible an unphotogenic. However the surrounding villages have wonderful charm and I have countless memories cycling the surrounding roads with my Dad and canoeing the Pawcatuck including one humorous episode where we got interesting looks from the employees of the Kenyons Mill in the background when we paddled right through the middle of their factory one day!

As for the factory, it is why I've long wanted to try a shot here. Built in 1844, the mill first produced wool and cotton, and is one of the few historic textile mills in Rhode Island that continues to operate. The facility, which employs about 300 people, currently manufactures, dyes, and finishes fabrics and is owned by Brookwood Industries. brookwoodcompanies.com/finishing/

Only about 15 min behind Acela train 2169 came Amtrak Boston to Washington regional train 137 hustling down Main 1 at about MP 153.9. They are between the Kenyon School Road and Shannock Road overpasses and have just crossed the Pawcatuck River from the town of Richmond into Charlestown. Alas excepting the occasional work train and the very very rare detouring freight moves the only thing you can photograph here are Acelas and ACS64s....which truly is a shame because wouldn't a big freight just look fabulous!?

It seems that the pigeons have completely forgotten all about that hawk that did a fly by not too long ago and they're back visiting the yard a few times a day.

I'm happy the hawk didn't frighten them off completely, I would have missed the chance to capture this wonderful shot of cow pigeon riding the wave of the crowd earlier today.

I really like cow pigeon's pattern, but hadn't managed to get a shot of him/her that stood out to me before today.

Win/win. I got this shot and all those pigeons got a snack.

Hope everyone has had a good day.

With A few autoracks on the headpin Canadian Pacific train 199 hustles through Camp Douglas, WI on a warm Spring afternoon. One of the railroads retro painted SD70ACUs does the honors on this day.

UP SD40-2 1914 leads the way of a UP grain train as it roars through Arlington Heights, IL in notch 8.

It's a brisk autumn morning, a slight breeze, the smell of fresh rain in the air, the trees turning color, and the rumble of a mighty Reading T-1 Hog. It's October 14th, 2023, and the Reading and Northern railroad is running fall foliage trains to and from Reading Outer Station with Reading and Northern 2102. The brisk and thin air makes the Reading 6 chime louder, beefier, and more ominous, you hear the chuffing get closer, the noise of the drivers pounding away, and then the T-1 rolls into the frame putting on a show of smoke as the steam crew fights the tough grade.

Recent visit to NY city

It's Freight Car Friday so here is another look at THE freight cars synonymous with railroading on the Iron Range. This string of empty ore hoppers comprises Canadian National train U710 headed to Minntac for another load of taconite pellets. They are hustling over the Clouquet River at MP 25.5 on modern day CN's North Division Missabe Sub mainline. The 440 ft long and 40 ft high Warren Deck Truss bridge with deck girder approaches was once double tracked and is actually two identical parallel structures, with the one the train is on dating from 1924 and the abandoned one in the foreground dating from 1907.

The 24 ft 70 ton style ore hopper has been the standard since about 1942 and the Missabe amassed some 8000 between then and 1957. I'm not sure how many of the fleet remain today but we still saw trainloads of 1952, 1953 and 1957 vintage U29, U30 and U31 class cars.

This is an area that needs no introduction to even the most casual fan as the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway is in a word legendary. I won't bore you with pages of history as I couldn't do the road or region justice anyway. It simply needs to be experienced for oneself. But I will direct you to two resources. Absolutely check out the fabulous historical information here: www.missabe.com/
