I am continuing my slow clearout of stuff, and as today was on/off downpours I managed to photograph my entire glass animal collection, and also give these ones to one of my Chinese students.

I gave her the choice of all of them and she chose these.

Another Rare huge huntsman, Heteropoda davidbowie

On September 6th, 2009, it was announced that this endangered arachnid from Malaysia, recently discovered by Peter Jäger, received the scientific name of Heteropoda davidbowie. Mr Jäger chose to name the large, hairy, yellow arachnid after David Bowie because he wanted "to raise awareness about the discovery", and giving the species a celebrity name would certainly draw attention to its plight.

The Heteropoda classification denotes the spider as a member of the pantropical genus of spiders, which includes 178 species. Only found in parts of Malaysia, their habitat is being increasingly destroyed as humans clear the woodlands to make way for hotels and other tourist attractions.

Huntsman spider at night.

For the past few nights, this fairly large spider has spun his or her web, waiting for a meal.

Industrious in the extreme, by morning, the spider, the web, and the meal have disappeared, only to repeat the next night.

I took this shot armed with a torch and flash, myself becoming a meal for the night insects buzzing furiously about my ears.

Taken up residence outside my back door.

The Fountain Head on Beckett Street, Leeds was at one time a Melbourne Brewery pub and can be seen in that guise at www.leodis.net/display.aspx?resourceIdentifier=2003815_98...

The Melbourne Courtiers can still be seen in the windows to this day

.

This used to be a real Irish pub in the 1970-80s when Tommy Hughes was the landlord. It is still a very popular pub with good beer and food and it has just been redecorated internally.

All I can say is "glad they're small!"
