Hodge podge home entertainment center. My father built the base table / album shelf in the late '70s. I built the upper tier shelving to make room for more components and albums several years ago, and of course I stained it a color that completely doesn't match the clear coated natural pine of the base.

The 37 inch Insignia television doubles as the monitor for a component style HTPC I built a couple of years ago, and a Denon home theater receiver plus a pair of Bose bookshelf speakers handle the sound for all components. So it's good old fashioned stereo for me until maybe Santa brings a sub-woofer and some rear speakers for the full on surround sound effect :)

I intend to build a more integrated wall to wall custom entertainment center and desk in this space, but so far I haven't progressed beyond the grand planning phase...

This is my home server. The server is an Asus P5K Deluxe motherboard running a Q9400 processor, 4 GB of Corsair XMS DDR2 ram, a Zalman 7700 cpu cooler, an Antec 550W triple rail power supply and 7.5TB of storage (5 Seagate 1.5TB drives). I'm running Windows Home Server with PP2.

Currently, about 6TB of the space is full of videos, movies, photos, e-books, game images etc. I have about 3 more TB to load to the server once I add more HDD storage.

The case is an Antec 300 and I've modified it to run 6 120mm fans.

Added a second monitor to the mix

Built in with elevated deck for Toshiba 65" rear projection TV, componant housing, front speakers to each side, center above and subwoofer below. Storage drawers to each side of sub.

Down cast recessed lighting above componants, and two sconces to each side of display, all on same dimmer.

This is my main gaming PC.

It consists of a Q9650 processor (overclocked to 3.6), an Asus Maximus Formula motherboard, 4GB of Corsair Dominator DDR2 (at 1200), OCZ Vendetta 2 heat pip cpu cooler, EVGA 9800GTX 1GB video card, Corsair 750 power supply, Creative X-Fi Titanium Pro sound card, a seagate 7200.12 1TB hard drive, 3 Samsung SH-223 DVD/RW drives and an Antec 900.2 case.

The case has a 230mm fan on top, two 120 mm fans in front and a 120 mm fan on the rear. All are variable speed and are lit by blue LEDs.

It is currently running Windows 7 Ultimate.

View of the Back of the PC.

The Back cover was Hand made out of a flat sheet of metal. I used a Dremel to precut where I wanted to bend the metal. I also used the Dremel to cut the holes at the right place.

Could that be the most gorgeous keyboard ever?

This is the corner of our living room. Media setup is complete, apart from needing to tidy up the cables a bit! TV is a normal TV, and is also hooked up to our Home Theatre PC. This is a DIY job, using a Mini-ITX motherboard. A Squeezebox duet sits on top of the PC, hooked up to a DAC, feeding the Cambridge Audio 840A amp. Keyboard is the unmistakable Logitech diNovo Edge.

No need for a CD player; lossless audio streams to the Squeezebox. No need for DVD or Blu Ray; media is streamed to HTPC over a wired gigabit LAN.

Columbo is up there too, keeping an eye on the set up. He knows all...! ;-)

Back of the Front cover

Place of my own, a shitbox by my standards, but it works.

Needs some cable management but I'm waiting until I get my aluminum rack mount built. The rack will be three 4U sections that stack on top of each other. So, amp and preamp in one section. Computer in another 4U section etc. Without devices, the entire rack will weigh 30lbs. Each section should weigh less than 40lbs with devices.

This is a picture of our theater. It's a double exposure to get the look of the theater along with a good shot of the movie. This is taken from the armrest in the middle of the second row of seats. This row is on a 12" riser (stadium seats).

The projector is a Marquee 8000 run off my HTPC.

With Windows 7 Ultimate installed, the power up time is ~30 seconds.

The Windows Experience Index is as follows (the scale goes from 1.0 to 7.9):

Processor: 6.9

Memory (RAM): 7.4

Graphics: 6.7

Gaming graphics: 6.7

Primary hard disk: 7.4

Base score: 6.7 (determined by lowest subscore)

The parts list:

Intel Core i3 2120T (2.6GHZ) (2nd gen Sandy Bridge)

ark.intel.com/products/53427/Intel-Core-i3-2120T-Processo...

I chose this CPU because I think it has the best balance of computing power (2 cores, 4 threads), consuming power (with a TDP of just 35W) and price.

CPU cooler SCYTHE Kozuti

The CPU's stock cooler didn't work properly, so I had to buy this one. It's more powerful, more quiet and more reliable than Intel's.

SUPERCASE MINI-ITX MI-008 (250W)

www.supercase.gr/en/p/1-cases/2-super-case/32-itx-series/...

This was the smaller case I could find with enough space for CPU+cooler and a decent PSU. I could install one 5.4" drive, one 3.5" hard disc and two 2.5" hard discs if I wanted to :D I chose to install just the 2.5" HDs, the optical drive isn't necessary anymore (one can install everything from a single USB flash drive!), and since this isn't being used as a HTPC for now, a big capacity 3.5" HD wasn't needed either.

View of the right side of the HTPC.

You can see two 1.5TB HDDs. the bottom one is attached to the base of the case with "Scythe HDD Stabilizers"

Yep, I can play Sup Com on the Home Theater. The projector is an HD model, and my new HTPC has an X6800 and a 8800GTX video card, so plenty of horsepower there. :)

The original PCB has been re-used to wire the Power, Reset and Eject buttons.

It's ESPN360 web streaming playing full screen on my HTPC, connected to my (ancient) Sony tube TV. Looks pretty good, and a heck of a lot cheaper month to month.

View of the left side of the HTPC.

The PCB on the side is for the VFD. I could not fit the two PCBs at the front so I had to separate them and built a custom ribbon cable to interconnect them.

Wireless Keyboard/Mouse

We wanted a way to stream netflix and watch blu-ray in the bedroom, and we wanted it to go well with the wall-mounted television. I found this studio hybrid on dell's refurb site and thought it would be the perfect machine.

It has 4 gigs of ram and a core 2 duo processor. The biggest drawback: laptop video card, so no serious gaming. It came with Vista Home Premium, which means we can use the VMCnetflix plugin for netflix streaming from media center. It included a radio-frequency (e.g., better connection) wireless mouse and keyboard. The whole thing, including tax, shipping, and mounting hardware, cost less than $600.

I attached two mending brackets to a stud and drywall anchors. The straps run between the wall and the brackets, which are offset from the wall with silicon washers. I used 3M command strips to adhere the case to the brackets. The strips prevent horizontal movement and vibration noise, and also minimize strap sag. I still need to do some cable management. I'll post pics of the whole setup when I'm done.

I removed the reflections from this shot.

Our new Home Theatre PC, and smaller than a shoebox. We’ve combined powerful onboard Nvidia 9300 graphics and a Blu-ray drive with DVI, HDMI, Optical and Coaxial Audio out (as well as a legacy VGA ports.

Every other HTPC out there seems to be Micro ATX isntead of Mini ITX and Blu-ray is always an optional upgrade. What’s the point of having a 1080p-capable PC if you have to speed a week on Bittorrent downloading a 20GB Blu-ray rip? Blu-ray optical drives should be standard and it is on ours. Otherwise, just buy a dedicated sub £100 media player (though their interfaces are usually terrible).

The limitation of mini-ITX and small PCs is it can be difficult to sqeeze in an extra graphics card. With that in mind, we’ve gone with some of the best onboard graphics available, the Nvidia 9300. And instead of using a dual core Atom processor, we’re fitting it with a new Pentium Dual Core E6300 Processor, with 2 x 2.8GHz CPUs, FSB of 1066Mhz, and 2MB of L2 Cache.

Combined with 4GB of RAM, that makes this a tiny HTPC that you can actually use for gaming and general multi-tasking. All for just £399 ex VAT.
