Finally people!
iBoot and Snow Leopard found each other and are now living in the alter ego of my HTPC.
This Mac Pro wannabe is fully functional, thank God.
I've heard all the requests. And despite them, I'll share pretty much the same view I have everyday. At least when I'm not working on a box.
Let's mosey around, basically from the left onward.
First up, my trusty Deejo "letter opener" plus a damascus Japanese folder for back up. You know, just in case. They're laying on a very nice leather organizer from Orvis.
Above them, many remotes, for the tee vee machine, Blu-ray player and the ceiling lights and fan (not shown, stop looking!).
Big ass Samsung curved monitor, flanked by Bose desktop speakers. Mandatory yelo pad (scribble scribble), tiny grumpy Buddha I've had forever, and some Claw Hammer brand Hot Cinnamon mints for sustenance.
That little keyboard is a RecZone Password safe, on account of I'm old. And I don't wanna hear about no automatic password rememberer doo hick on my computer, 'cause I got that too. On account of.... oh, you know...
Now that big flashy keyboard, that's an Azio Retro Classic, which advertises it self (right there, look, on the label) as "Elegantly Classic". I would have to agree. It's real easy for me to type with and it's satisfyingly noisy.
Let's see, then there's an oversized mouse pad, with a round Jellows wrist rest. More comfortable for me than the standard poof wrist rest, and it's always cool to the touch
Above that is part of an ancient aircraft's altitude indicator which sat upon my drawing board and held my X-acto knife, Rapid-o-graphs and non-reproducing blue pencils when I was working as a commercial artist, doin' the old cut and paste way before computers took over the graphics business. Now it handles a couple of pens and, yes, dammit, a yellow duckie mechanical pencil.
Over there on the edge, the remote for my Edifier speakers for when I wish for bigger sound and the unsung workhorse, a tiny but mucho powerful Intel NUC8i3BEK Mini PC/HTPC, Intel Dual-Core i3-8109U Upto 3.6GHz, 32GB DDR4, 1TB m.2 SSD, WiFi, Bluetooth, Thunderbolt 3, 4k Support, Dual Monit (Computers & Accessories).

I've installed a Home Automation System in my apartment consisting of GE Z-Wave Wireless dimmers, a Vera Z-Wave Controller, an attached USB-UIRT to transmit IR to my TV/Receiver, and SQ Remote running on my iPad to let me control it all.
With this setup, I can turn on my TV/Receiver, Fire up Plex on my Office/HTPC, play a movie, dim the lights and control the volume.

I spend alot of time in this space. The setup uses two Ikea Jerker desks - combined. I just swing between them depending on what I'm working on. The setup was gradually built up over a year and a half. I spend time editing my pics[D40/18-55/50/55-200] / playing TF2 or working on an embedded project.
IKEA should get back the Jerker desk. Both the desks were got off Craigslist. If there is more interest, I'll label all the stuff on the electronics bench with purchase links in a separate pic.

I have a large corner desk from www.workspaces.com in a spare bedroom in my apartment. The computer is a custom-built "Hackintosh" used for video production, photo editing, and IT administration. It's also the multimedia hub of my apartment, acting as a HTPC by feeding digital audio and video into my living room home theater and serving up an awesome media center called Plex.
Running via DVI on a Humax LCD TV 32TPVR @ 1280x768 pixels native resolution. No overscans, full 1:1 pixel mapping!
I built this pc for my dad, so that he can watch hulu desktop in his living room. He doesn't like the clutter of component boxes plugged into his TV, so I designed and fabbed up a case using acrylic from the left over bin at tap plastics, with a great deal of help from @drandolph, that allows it to hang off of a tv's built in VESA mount bolt holes.
3.0 ghz Athalon X2, 4 gb DDR2 ram, 250 gb hard drive, 300 watt mini ITX power supply, onboard Radeon 4200.
Did a little upgrading with a new case, modular PSU, and a much needed SSD. Should hold me over until I can afford to build a new setup.

IBM 3279-S3G in my living room with an ssh session to a computer running mplayer. The terminal connects via coax to a 3174-21L, then to an 9034 ESCON converter, then to my IBM z890, ssh through the network to my "home theater PC."
using a heatpipe-based chassis and a low power (45w) i7 haswell cpu.
it has the usual 8-threads (4 real cores), has a pretty good onboard video 'chip' and can play any HD video that I can throw at it.
using the max memory I can install (16gb low profile ram sticks) and a nice m-sata ssd, which dual boots win7 and linux.
psu is a pico-psu that sits right in the atx power header. power to that is via a 19v DC laptop style brick.
there was a wifi pci-e card installed but I'm not using it and removed it. it was an intel ac-rated card and was getting over 800Mbps, which wasn't too bad at all. the onboard wired enet is intel gig-e, which is the preferred NIC chip.
due to the location of the cpu socket (closer to the heatsink) I had to swap out the 'long heatpipes' for the short pipes. those were an expenive ($40, iirc) option but now that I have both, I can 'fit' more motherboards if I want to reuse this chassis next build. and I will, since the chassis is $200 !

I rebuilt my main workstation.
My old one had about 8 monitors, 4 24's and 2 22's. This one has 3 30" LGs and 3 24" Samsungs. All six are connected to my core i7 machine that I built a little over a year ago, it will be replaced soon.
I designed and custom built the desk, the frame is 2 x 6s and the top is from ikea.

Inside view of the completed digital audio switch.
I'm pleased with the end result; the red plastic window is press-fit and an exact fit. the front button is soft touch and the input can be controlled with this button or via an IR remote. I avoided any screws or fasteners visible from the front panel (although the top panel is designed for easy removal and does have visible screws).
all in all, it was about a week's work to do the CAD, try it out with paper models and then finally go to laser cut plastic.
(the right-most LED block looks like its set back too far, but its not; that's just a photo angle problem. both LED strips are pressed right up against the red plastic filter and you don't see any unlit segments, day or night, either).
the arduino controls the thing and power also comes in via the usb rear port (for both programming and power to the entire box).
its not easily visible, but there's an 8pin attiny85 in there, too; its doing IR receive duty and sending ascii strings over a softserial port to the main arduino. the main arduino is too busy with freq counting (for the spdif bitrate display) to also do IR capture and decode; so the little 8pin chip will do that, instead. its my first time using the attiny in the arduino environment (flashing it from a spare arduino, as well).
there is a small red slide switch on the green board. since I'm using the hardware uart, you need to be able to remove the 'other device' hanging off of it when you download firmware over usb (which uses the UART on the arduino). so, switch open to update firmware, switch closed for runtime. if you forget and leave the switch connected, you will get nothing but timeouts when you try to flash the device.
in the far background is my HTPC, which has an optical-out for spdif (onboard realtek audio). it works fine up to 96k. the pc is a nice fanless i7 (haswell chip with heatpipes to keep it 100% fanless).

I made some changes in the equipment rack. I am selling some of my gear on eBay (ReplayTV, Second TiVo, and DVHS) and focusing more on Windows Media Center which created some room in the epuipment rack. I re-cased the HTPC to an Antec Sonata, moved the Media Server and USB Drives into the rack, and put the touchscreen at eye level. This is not a great picture, maybe I'll get a better one posted when I have some more time.

Excuse the mess in the background - I've been on the road and have tons of held mail and other miscellaneous things everywhere.
Thanks to the 'efficient' Correios (Brazilian Postal Company), the Micro SD Card I bought from an eBay seller from HK was delivered after just 129 days.
The 32GB of internal storage is enough to keep this Intel Compute Stick (STK1AW32SC) running as a web browsing Windows 10 PC and occasional Media Player and nothing more, so this Samsung 64GB Micro SD Card is a much needed addition, specially for emulation and torrenting uses.

a nice unexpected bonus: connecting my vizio 39" tv to this I was surprised to find a true 120hz refresh rate at even 1920HD. motion on movies is now so much better!

3. Rainmeter (now aka Rainlendar) with the HUD.Vision skin to embed live updating system parameters on the desktop. These are slightly customized versions by myself to change some sizes and alignment and to use the SpeedFan plugin to display temperatures with some of the items.
The network meter isn't quite accurate and I couldn't get the Windows Performance Monitor plugin version working correctly. If you have experience with this please let me know. The instance name for my network interface was ridiculously long and didn't seem to take correctly in the ini file.

My BeyondTV HTPC setup. Used for watching and recording TV, playing PC games, and playing music and videos that are stored on a separate media server elsewhere in the house. The small HTPC is connected wirelessly to the home LAN.
My Boxee Box arrived today and I've been playing with it since I got home.
Some background before we go into initial impressions:
I watch a lot of movies and I'm the kind of person that actually does like to re-watch movies, so consequently I also collect a lot of movies. I have hundred of DVDs and terabytes of movie files that I've collected over the years. The movie files are in a variety of different formats spread across external hard drives, computers, and my 4-bay RAID 5 NAS (coincidentally, also a D-Link).
Over the years, the encoding format of choice for movie files has shifted from DIVX to XVID to H.264. Lately, I've been finding Bluray rips to replace my old DVD rips and in a way this is the format shift that my father had to do many times when I was growing up. We had a VHS player and then a Laserdisc player and then a S-VHS player and then a DVD-player.
When you have digital movie files, you're going to want a way to watch them.
This is a problem I've thought about quite a bit.
In the beginning it was simple, you watched them on your computer, or if you managed to do it, you ran a cable from your computer to your TV. As hardware started to catch up, you started to see DVD players with DIVX decoders built into them or took USB sticks that you could put movies on. There were hacky implementations on movie players on the Dreamcast which could barely decode the compressed video.
I think the original Xbox changed all this - shortly after hackers figured out how to modify the Xbox to play unsigned content, digital media enthusiasts started to collaborate and Xbox Media Player was born. In many ways, the Xbox was a perfect candidate for a media player - it has S-Video output, it had a hard drive and a relatively fast graphics engine and CPU, it had ethernet (or even WiFi if you bought an addon) - it was a computer that didn't cost as much as a computer dedicated to playing media would cost.
I used my Xbox as a media player for years and years and watched as the software evolved. Soon all your movies had cover art screen scraped from IMDB, it recognized various naming strategies and split files, even extracted metadata from .NFO files, the MP3 player could post to Audioscrobbler, it grew more and more mature as a software project. Unfortunately, the hardware in the Xbox stayed the same and soon the software itself outgrew the technicals specs of the Xbox, you couldn't stream and decode the newer rips fast enough for it to keep up.
Where did we go next? There were certainly many alternatives, HTPC's started entering the market, as well as Apple TV, or Mac Mini's running Plex, a fork of the original XBMC. I stuck with my Xbox as long as I could - honestly I didn't really need to upgrade because I watched movies on my trusty Infocus X1 projector, which wasn't really HD so there was no real benefit.
Then the Popcorn Hour came out and I was impressed at its specs. It had gigabit ethernet, two USB ports, an internal hard drive, HDMI out, and could play pretty much any video file I threw at it, including 1080p content. It was basically a poor man's Mac Mini running Plex. There was a fair amount of hacking done on it, nothing like the golden age of Xbox Media Center hacking, but soon it had a USENET client and a torrent downloader - in theory you could use it as a centralized repository for accumulating and watching media content, but I never really took it that far. The most I did was upgrade the NTFS driver to allow write support, so I could plug two hard drives in it and treat it as a NAS, but it was actually much slower than a real computer for that purpose.
The Popcorn Hour was the first in a line of Networked Media Tanks and there have been some decent improvements upon the original model - but honestly, the UI of the Popcorn Hour bugged me too much to consider getting another one. Navigating the menus was a pain, sometimes it would get into a mode where it could barely stream unless it was rebooted, sometimes the remote would only work from a few inches away.
When the last revision of the Apple TV came out, I considered it, but it wasn't a real choice for me because I have no intention of re-encoding several terabytes of movies into a Steve Jobs-approved format. It looks like jailbreaking the new one has gotten a fair amount of traction, but I think the CPU is ultimately underpowered which means that the decoding is going to have to happen on the server-side, which isn't really what I want and I don't really feel like having to maintain and modify another device to have it do what I want - I just want it to work out of box with my existing content.
Many of my friends have gone with the PS3 as a media player, which is nice because you get the side-benefit of a Blu-ray player and a game console, but again I think that this involves encoding on the server side. In the ideal world, I just want to be able to put everything on my NAS and/or the hard drives attached to the device and not have to run a computer to decode content.
So when the Boxee came close to being released, my frustrations with my current Popcorn Hour basically drove me to order it.
Initial impressions:
Smaller than I expected as I pulled it out of the box, I guess the problem is that all of the product shots don't really have anything next to them for scale.
I hooked up my HDMI cable, my ethernet cable hooked up to my Gigabit ethernet router, plugged in the power cable and turned it on.
Next was a series of screens that would never have made it out of 1 Infinite Loop.
The very first screen I saw was "Upgrade Now!" and a button to upgrade. I hit it, it downloaded an update for a little over two minutes, then I got to watch a progress bar. After a while, it rebooted itself and dumped itself into a menu for setting up a new account.
I flipped over the remote and started using the keyboard on the back of it to type in my e-mail address, except it kept saying "Not valid" next to the text input, so I backed out of the menu and tried it again. This time it worked, and it let me set up my account.
The first thing I did, unsurprisingly, was try to find the Flickr integration. I went to Apps and scrolled through literally hundreds of apps, only to find it at the very top among the first 8 apps. Its icon hadn't loaded yet - you would think they would want to have these on the box instead of downloading them.
I hit the Flickr button and then it... asked me to go to a web page on my computer.
Fun!
So I went to www.boxee.tv/auth and went through the authentication dance and tried it again, this time it showed me a Dashboard screen with some text that said Your Photostream, Your contacts, Your favorites, but no photos except my buddy icon. I hit the Your Photostream link and then thumbnails started rolling in, I played with the slideshow for a bit and then went back to the Dashboard and sure enough, thumbnails started coming in here, too. Overall, not that bad.
Next, I tried the Movies and TV tabs. First, I tried watching Alice in Wonderland which it reported as the Walt Disney animated version. I started it and it buffered it from Youtube Movies and started playing what appeared to be an older version of the film with real people - the first of many mismatches when autoguessing movies. Then I tried streaming The Daily Show from Fancast, a website I had worked on a couple years ago - and.. it opened up a webpage with a movie clip in the center of it. I managed to move the cursor to click on the Fullscreen button, but it made me wonder - Are they really partnered with all of these places, or do they just screen scrape and regex the movie clip out of them? The streaming was pretty unwatchable on an HD TV - it was pixelated and blocky as if it was just a blown up web page, which is not unsurprising considering it was just a blown up web page. I tried a few more TV shows, they all went to full screen immediately but were also pixelated and blocky.
I tried really hard to find the Netflix button, and then figuring that I needed to do the authentication dance, went back to my laptop and hooked up the two services, but I still couldn't find it on the actual device. Finally, I gave up and decided to start importing my content. I already have quite a few Samba shares from multiple devices, but when I selected my "New Movies" share it prompted me for my username and password, even though I have authentication off for that. I tried it three or four times and googled about it, turns out I needed to uninstall the latest Windows Live 2010 Essentials pack. Not really Boxee's fault, but still a bit weird.
Finally, it started importing my movies and it did a pretty impressive job of detecting what they were. I had to make a few corrections, sometimes it would choose the wrong movie that was named the same but from a different year. You change the movie through the Identify tab, type in a search term, and then choose from the results.
It's worth mentioning that the remote is kind of weird when you use the keyboard, often when you're filling in text fields on the device you have to move between them to start filling out the next one... but, on the keyboard side of the remote there is no arrow keys so you actually have to flip it over to move between fields and the flip it back to the keyboard to start typing again. After a while this gets pretty old.*
*Followup: I found some arrows on the keyboard side. =) In my defense, they were hard to find in low-light.
It appears there's no recourse if you don't agree with the cover art it chooses for the movie - for one movie I autocorrected, it didn't pull cover art at all - others it would have errors selecting the movie even though it was in the search result list - I think this might be a parsing error on their part.
There are two views for browsing Movies, a grid with a bunch of movie covers and a list view which has a long list on the left side and the cover and description on the right. The description includes the Director, but you can't filter the list by Director, which was really disappointing. To be fair, you couldn't really do that on the Popcorn Hour either, but it seems like it would be a reasonable feature. I had hoped if it was going to make the effort to download the meta-data associated with each movie it would at least let you filter by them. The Movies tab with streaming movies can be sorted by Genre, but the local files cannot, only by Title. It would be nice to be able to see some more granular detail on the movie like the path name and the filenames - maybe there is, but I didn't find it on the browsing section, only on the correction screen.
The TV Shows tab was a bit more impressive, first there's a grid of TV shows and then when you select one, it breaks it down into seasons in the detail view. For whatever reason, the later episodes in the season seemed to have the same thumbnail where the earlier episodes had episode-specific screenshots. There was also a synopsis of each episode.
As far as actually watching movies goes, I tried a few, they all played fine except a handful that I knew already had encoding issues. I tried switching subtitles and got confused of how to actually change them - the icons were not very intuitive, although I did stumble upon a feature that it would download subtitles from Open Subtitles which I thought was pretty cool - assuming they actually synced correctly.
I didn't try out the music player or the non-Flickr native photo viewer.
Finally, I rebooted, hoping the Netflix sync would kick in then, but it wasn't anywhere to be found. Then I went back to my Local Movies tab and it had to re-download all of the cover art again - I really hope this was a mistake and it does have a local cache - otherwise this seems like an unnecessary dependency on Internet availability. Finally, I googled about the Netflix thing - it's supposed to be in a firmware update "by the end of the year". Great.
Final conclusions:
The movie/TV show import was the most impressive feature, obviously a lot of effort has been put into recognizing various filenames and the correction worked for most Movies and TV shows. Unfortunately, I think the streaming seemed very 1.0 - I don't see myself using it a lot although if the HD Netflix has a good interface I think that will make it considerably more useful. It clearly doesn't have the polish of an Apple TV but then again, it seems like they are for different markets - legitimate content vs. "acquired" content. There seemed to be a handful of bugs in even the setup process, not to mention the website - the whole thing does seem a little rushed to market. If I find the music interface cumbersome, I might end up getting the new Apple TV as well, the price point certainly makes that possible. Either way, it's still a step-up from my dying Popcorn Hour, but if you're buying it for it's Internet streaming claims, I would hold out until a few more firmware updates and partnerships.
Here's the full setup with the custom UI I created for it. And finally some details about the software, as promised:
* Ubuntu, because I didn't want to build a Hackintosh and I couldn't stand Windows for more than a day.
* Netatalk for AFP support, which makes connecting to it from my Mac and using Time Machine a breeze.
* Air Video Server, so my iOS devices don't feel left out.
* Minecraft Server; more specifically the Bukkit mod with some plugins.
* µTorrent Server & JDownloader with their respective web UIs.
* All of the above are set up to run as services, so they start automatically and run in the background.
* Avahi to make file sharing, Time Machine, Air Video and VNC available on my Mac via Bonjour.
* And the aforementioned custom UI, which is simply a website running in Chrome's fullscreen mode, with a PHP backend running on Lighttpd, controlling the system with shell scripts. It's not entirely done yet though, so check back later for even more details.
* And finally, Boxee.
Next up: Doing something about those cables, and finding an IR receiver for the Apple Remote. Also getting a blog.
The new GPU for my HTPC. In the box, it also has a small low profile bracket for small cases (plus a second one for the VGA port), a driver CD, and a "Quick Installation Guide". Oh, and a Sapphire sticker. :p

I built this pc for my dad, so that he can watch hulu desktop in his living room. He doesn't like the clutter of component boxes plugged into his TV, so I designed and fabbed up a case using acrylic from the left over bin at tap plastics, with a great deal of help from @drandolph, that allows it to hang off of a tv's built in VESA mount bolt holes.

I wanted to make a PC with a rustic look. It needed to look good in the living room without screaming "I'm a PC!" or looking like a disco jukebox full of lights.
I had lots of wood left over from the Redwood PC mod, it is very pretty wood and a shame to not use. This time I went for a matte finish. The wood was sanded, and a thin coat of polyurethane was applied and left to dry. Then it was lightly sanded back to a matte finish.
The faceplate is 1/4" Paduak hardwood. Laser Etched with a Texas Star. The shell is covered in Paduak veneer (real wood). The veneer overhangs the front to ensure no metal is visible underneath. The vent holes on the side were laser cut to match the existing shuttle vents.
The black bands are brass strips, powdercoated black. They cover up the seams in the veneer which expand and contract based on temperature.
The processor runs completly fanless all the time. Only when doing something intense such as ripping at DVD or CD does the ultra quiet fan kick in.
The harddrive is small, only 40GB, but it is also nearly silent.
Even though this is a HTPC, all large data files are offloaded to a network server with 750GB of space. In fact the entire My Documents folder has been moved to a network share. This also allows the same copy of iTunes to be run off both the server and the HTPC.
