I used a pre-folded double fold bias tape to create the bound edge on these placemats. There are several ways to attache the binding, I pinned mine in place and sewed straight down, making sure that the thread was correctly sewing on both the front and back of the placemat.

Interior of brake drum. This shows the bolt heads that go through the brake drum, the plate, and the floor flange holding it all together.
My image titled VAST was created from two images. Here I've shown on the left what the SOOC image looks like when exposed based on enough light to see the valley below. I rotated the SOOC shot 180 degrees making it appear I was above the clouds or in Space. Then I added the SOOC moon shot and voila!

This was what my slideshow set up looked like when people came in to the room. I used a little application called SlideShow Desktop which basically works by changing your desktop photo and allowing you to step through slides either manually or automatically. Beats the hell out of powerpoint.
Scanning with the ScanSnap S500.
I can comfortably put about 60 pages in the hopper - these are fairly thick pages. I can add more pages to the hopper before this set is done, to keep the scanner working continuously. Or, I can wander off and let it run out of pages - when I come back I will have the option to continue scanning into the same batch.
Scanning took 20 minutes. I was able to do other things during this time, as long as I refilled the hopper whenever it started running low.
Let me also say the ScanSnap is, quite simply, the best scanner anywhere near this price range. It is compact (when folded up it is about the size of a football!) and very solidly built. It scans both sides of the paper in one pass, makes almost no noise, and it almost never misfeeds. When it does, it opens like a clamshell and the paper just falls through - you never find yourself grabbing a peice of paper from one end and pulling against resistance or tearing the paper. I have used several 'all-in-one' print/scan/fax devices with flatbeds and sheetfeeders. The ScanSnap kicks their butts clear out of the park.
You also get a copy of Acrobat 7 and ABYY FineReader (OCR software) with your ScanSnap, all for about $450. Prices and versions may have changed since I bought mine. I expect this to last a decade or more - the moving/wearable parts are replaceable. Unlike the all-in-one devices which, once they broke, were not repairable.
Using whatever painting skills you have, do the "top coat" for the background. I like to paint with various colors on the canvas when the previous color is still wet. This gives the cheapo acrylics the simulated look of texture (oil-based paints will rise off the canvas more).
Let dry.

There are three series: 1) normal photos, 2) Long exposure photos (depending on the delay movements disappear or show distortions) and 3) selective focus, which is made possible by the adjustability of the technical camera.
