Last weekend we went to the NASA Ames Research Center to attend the GoFly event, where teams from around the world displayed their flying motorcycles, hoverboards, human drones and more. The USAF had a Sikorsky HH-60 Pave Hawk on display. Kids loved to explore it, including me.

I processed a balanced and a photographic HDR photo from two RAW exposures, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

The previous weekend we went to the NASA Ames Research Center to attend the GoFly event, where teams from around the world displayed their flying motorcycles, hoverboards, human drones and more.

The vehicles were on display just next to Hangar One, one of the world's largest freestanding structures, built in 1933 to house large airships. The exterior panels were removed a few years back due to toxic materials, including lead paint and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The hangar is a well known landmark in the Silicon Valley; personally I prefer this "naked look."

I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and desaturated the image. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

The Bumblebee 3000 Hoverboard by Fnord Inc, Calvin takes it for a spin.

Today we went to the NASA Ames Research Center to attend the GoFly event, where teams from around the world displayed their flying motorcycles, hoverboards, human drones and more, with the chance to win $2 million in prizes. Think Marty McFly in his DeLorean "back to the future," and Falcon with his Wingsuit in "The Avengers". Stay tuned for photos of selected flying machines.

The coast guard had a Lockheed C-130 Hercules military transport airplane on display. We could go into its belly, quite impressive. The cockpit was off limits. I asked a guard if I could get permission to take a photo in the cockpit. Luckily he agreed.

I took this shot with a Laowa 4mm f/2.8 Fisheye lens. This is a circular fisheye lens, meaning you get a full circle. The angle of view is an amazing 210°, e.g. the camera can see more than a half sphere!

Well, like the title says you supply your own narrative.

I would use examples like this in classes I taught. Looking at the pics the viewer was to construct a narrative as to what is happening and what is the context of this picture.

I'm not sure what etiquette requires in such a situation. Do I give and answer to action and context of the photo? Or not? Well, that certainly is a puzzler, isn't it?

Old shot from my trip to the ASMP Strictly Business seminar that I was lucky enough to be sent to by Chase Jarvis. I really liked this one section of the O'Hare airport, so on my way home I spent a while having some fun shooting it. I probably rode back and forth on these things for 20 minutes taking pictures of myself while strangers looked at me like I was a weirdo. Nothing unusual.

I was thinking of calling this posting "Hoverboard".

A skilled surfer gets some air while negotiating a wave at Huntington Beach, California (also known as Surf City, USA).

When my wife and I visit the area, we usually take some time to watch and photograph the surfers who frequent the area. I am always amazed that I can get photos like this with a 70-200 mm lens. You might note that in this photo the surfboard is actually pointed away from the front of the photo.

Okay, so I tend to be more of a landscape photographer, but I do enjoy trying other types of photography. I've gotten some questions about my surfer photos, so here is the inside scoop.

I took this from the pier at Huntington Beach. I've learned that distance is important. Too close and you are looking down; too far and the surfer is too small. I look for surfers with skill and that surf with their faces coming toward me and into the light. My preference is for a surfer with some color and not wearing an all black wetsuit. I try to make sure the shutter speed is above 1/1,000 sec. I've been surprised at how bright water scenes are, but in this case I raised the ISO to 100 whereas I try to shoot landscapes at ISO 64. The camera does help. This is a crop of 3,407 x 2336 pixels from a capture of 8,256 x 5,504. Finally, I spot focus, but don't worry too much about composition as I know almost all of my surfer photos will be cropped.

Die Treppe wurde im Jahr vierzehnhundertcornflakes im Norden von Italien erfunden. Der in den Dolomiten ansässige Dr. Diabolo hat es sich zur Lebensaufgabe gemacht allen alten, fetten und Asthmaleiden Menschen das leben noch mehr zu erschweren.

Aufgrund von antiken persischen Marketing-Schriftrollen, die sein Nachbar Luigi Āl-e Ahmad übersetzte, beherrschte Dr. Diabolo bald den kompletten Markt der Auf- und Abbewegung. Selbst das bayrische Traditionsunternehmen "A Lift!" stand binnen kürzester Zeit vor dem aus und wurde für ein Löwenbräu und eine kalte Weißwurst an den Ziegenpeter verkauft.

Dieser wiederum eröffnete das Geschäft unter den Namen LiftA und bewirbt sein Produkt seit dem in jeder zweiten Ausgabe des Käseblattes.

Wissenschaftler haben errechnet, dass wenn der Markt sich so weiter entwickelt wohl im Jahre 2137 der letzte Lift von den Treppen verdrängt wurde. Die letzten Überreste der Lifte dürfte man dann nur noch als recyceltes Material in den Kugellagern der Hoverboards von V-Tech wiederfinden.

Ganz bedrohlich ist die Verharmlosung des Problems, da immer wieder irgendwelche Pseudofotografen Treppen ablichten. Hier entsteht schnell ein vertrautes Gefühl, dass diese invasive architektonische Art verniedlicht und ehe man sich versieht, steht man montags im Osten mit einem Schild und ruft ... "Ziegenpeter muss weg!"

So. Und nun mal ganz ehrlich...

Wieso liest du den Schwachsinn bis hier? Das ist doch krank!

Using the wee (30cm) Gorilla mini tripod I got recently, sat it on top of one of the pillars next to the canal that have the hook-up points for moored barges to get water and power, but also doubles as handy stand for mini tripod!

As I was lining it up, this chap came by on a hoverboard type thing, lights on it, low to the ground, and a light in his helmet, producing this twin light trail effect. Pic was rushed and didn't quite come out, but posting anyway as I liked the double light trails.

Yesterday on Leap Day we went to the NASA Ames Research Center to attend the GoFly event, where teams from around the world displayed their flying motorcycles, hoverboards, human drones and more, with the chance to win $2 million in prizes. Another car of tomorrow, this time in the familiar family truckster livery. I'd been wanting to do a station wagon for a while and the time was right. Wouldn't be a classic wagon without that wood paneling down the sides now, would it? When I was a kid our family wagon was a Plymouth Volare in blue with, yes, wood paneling. I remember it fondly.
