Seen in the back garden

I don't know if this is a Hoverfly or just a fly that hovers if you know what I mean. It hovers in the same place and then veers off at an angle at the speed of sound and then hovers again.

Today has been a day of hover flie in the garden of various shapes and sizes

Pretty hover-fly drinking nectar from a flower. Although hover-flies look like wasps they are actually flies and do not sting or bite.

Hoverflies, sometimes called flower flies. They are often seen hovering at flowers. In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams. In other species, the larvae are insectivores and prey on aphids, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects. Some live in the nests of social insects of ants, termites or bees; in decaying vegetation, fungi or rotting wood.In Thailand have 50 species.

So you build a scene, and also you build a space ship, and you want the ship to appear hovering, rather than flying past, but it's a static display....

Possibly Meliscaeva auricollis

A small hover tank, popular among mercenaries, with a very versatile design. Its fast pulse lifts and light armor make it highly maneuverable, and its communications array has a range of over 20 miles.

HH-60J Jayhawk in a hover prior to departure. Got this shot with a 200mm lens I borrowed.

This is something completely new for me, I've never had a go at photographing insects before.

It's far from perfect, I had to use ISO 800 to get a high enough shutter speed to hand hold at this distance. I was actually trying to photograph some very busy bees but then this hover fly posed for me! He was gone after a couple of second but I managed to get a quick shot with at least some of him in focus.

Hover Dam's road is still under construction but the half-finished bridge looked very cool, plus Monika never been so we stopped by and took some pictures. Water level in lake Mead are a lot lower than they were last time I was there.
