[ October 25, 2009 ] Our current home improvement project: upgrading anything and everything under the house.. insullation, vapor barrier, etc. This is us looking confused at Home Depot....

This is an AFTER of the first bathroom. I am pleased with the way it turned out. I had a nice set from Bed Bath and Beyond but then went to Macy's and found this curtain. Since the house is earth toned I thought that this would be a cheery and welcoming change.

The wall had 2 layers of paint and 2 layers of wallpaper over the plaster.

End of day one. We got about 4.5-5' of floor done.

Responsible Handyman Las Vegas installed this gorgeous 12" granite tile with an accent strip along our tub surround and shower . They also made 4 granite corner shelves to match. I would highly recommend them to anyone in the Las Vegas area that needs some home improvement or maintenance!

This took frickin' hours and I am now wearing a few bandages, but the functional parts of this corner are done now. Getting the cabinets bolted up wasn't so much a problem, but finding studs where to put the bolts was. Putting in the electrical wasn't tough, just required a little configuring because the electrical wire came out of the wall below the cabinet. Also, I followed the template for where to put the screws for the microwave and yet... the holes didn't line up. And the spacer blocks I put in per the instructions, despite being glued up, kept moving so I couldn't get the screws in place so simply... And then putting in the vent pipe from microwave to the hole in the ceiling was a huge debacle because the difference between the middle of the two holes is 4½" so I had to bend some pipe... And once I was putting the pipe in the cabinet that's when the attic part of the pipe fell in like a prolapsed rectum, so I had to go to the attic and screw around with that (including doing some cutting with a Dremel) to get that crap back in... And did I mention the miles of duct tape that connect the two ends?

But the damn thing is done!! And works. Bring on the paint!

Now, to do tile decoration below this...

Made from the scrap wood left over from the desk project.

Our house came with a pedestal sink.. but as you can see the builder's rough-plumber didn't give a shit, so all the water lines aren't hidden behind the leg.. Anyways, we wanted more room to store washroom stuff such as cleaners and other hash chemicals.. So, out this goes! (Well, to the basement it goes, anyways.. we aren't throwing it out just yet)

so the bathroom -improvement project is all wrapped up, unless a second coat is needed. We picked Harvest Brown, a Behr paint color, and put it in the kitchen and bath paint. Stuff went on like sludge. I am hoping this project is done! (sure looks better than it did before!)

I had enough scrap wood left over from the desktop that I made this smaller board to be used as a printer table.

Better use the low VOC stuff...

Product review: doesn't cover as well as Killz, but has almost no odor. Took an entire can to do one room, two coats. We'll probably need at least two more coats when we're done. Works better on drywall than plaster. Overall, reasonable performance for increased safety. (or perception of safety)

This is the porch on the Carriage House, and it appears to be losing its mortar and seeing some concrete block disintegration.

Finally done....for the most part. We're going to be putting some tile on the floor in front of the fireplace and the wiring for the mantel lighting needs to be completed. Other than those 2 things this project is done.

We're really happy with the stone selection. The installation wasn't too bad other than running 1 box short which delayed finishing that step a few days. I was able to run a 10" mantel around the fireplace which should be plenty big for anything we decide to place along it (holiday decorations, pictures, etc.).

The new TV and mount were pretty easy to get up and running. I installed a recessed outlet for power and Cat5 behind the TV. The TV we bought has Netflix capabilities so we can watch that without any other device which is great. I also installed a lower outlet that has power plus 2 more Cat5 jacks. This way if we ever want to run a BluRay or game device there we have internet jacks available so we can hardwire them into the network. I'm sure wireless will be used more in the future but I like the stability of being hardwired. Either way, the capability is there for future use.

Billy was very interested in helping through out the project. Here he's giving the stones a quick going over to make sure everything is in order.

This way the water that drained from the unit can easily travel down the hose.

Who knew that a radiant heating system would weigh in at 600+ pounds and take up 2 pallets. It was easy to break down and transfer into the house though.

Time to start this project.
