"Three Colorful Notes"
I wish today's image had been four times easier to capture. Were you aware that it is nearly impossible to pluck a piano string vertically? I had never thought about it before today. So, a little backstory may be in order. A few months ago I acquired a stripped-down little piano. My neighbor was going to throw it away, and naturally I had to take it off her hands. I knew I would photograph it in some matter at some time. Upon wrestling it into my garage (it must way about 200 lbs), I tried to figure out what to do with it. I knew the image would involve holi powder in some way, but I had not worked out the details. After changing angles and lighting several times, I finally decided that low was the way to go. Assuming I did not light whatever was behind the instrument, the low angle would isolate the powders against darkness. It seemed to make sense. What did NOT make sense was how I was going to "trigger" the strings to release the colored powders simultaneously. The lighting was very simple. There is a snooted speedlight at camera-right, aimed slightly back towards the camera. That's it. After loading the strings carefully with a mixture of holi powder and baking soda (the soda allowed me to dilute the the colors and give the holi powders some heft), I feverishly plucked the strings and triggered the camera, nearly at the same time. Needless to say, some frames are void of any powders, and others show my plucking fingers. Following several attempts, I managed to come up with this exposure. This is one exposure, and once I captured it, I walked away. I knew I would not get a better one for a while.........and I was tired of piling minute quantities of powder on to piano strings. I foresee other images involving this piano in the future. Thanks for giving a pluck and stopping by!!

The objective of a Color Fun Run is to shower your participants with color! So how much color powder do you need? That is based on how many participants you have and how many color stations you will set up. Please see below for basic recommended amounts. Keep in mind this is a general suggestion, it depends entirely on:
-How you are distributing your color powder
-How much you are throwing
-How much color you want on your racers.
Color Powder Stations
A Color Powder Station usually consists of one color. For example if you have 3 color stations – one station might be blue, one might be yellow and one might be pink. If you plan on having multiple colors at a station you will use much more powder than the recommended quantities listed below.
3 Color Stations – a minimum of 1/2 pound of powder per participant
4 Color Stations – a minimum of 3/4 pound of color powder per participant
5 Color Stations- a minimum of 1 pound of color powder per participant
For example if you have 100 participants and you have 3 color stations you would need at least 50 pounds of color powder. If you really want to cover (literally) your participants you may want to order a bit more to insure you have some happy colorful campers at the end of your run. Color Powder is typically sold in 25 pound bags.

Day 318
"That Neighbor"
We all have or had a neighbor like Mrs. Nitz. She's always making sure the neighborhood kids don't walk on her grass, keeps the ball if it falls in her yard, she knocks on the door if things are a little too loud, and she doesn't like people in general. I digress. I am currently working for a company which manufactures all sorts of metal pipes, filters and widgets. I've almost finished the job, and the sulfur and green powder are two of the last products to shoot. I thought this should be the final image I present to the client. Good idea? I used my trusty Light Blaster to project an image of a farm house on the white background, though because of the macro lens, it is rather blurry. My key light was initially a tightly snooted speedlight, directly above our farm maiden. When I realized that the Light Blaster was leaking light on to Mrs. Nitz.....I liked the light, and went with it. With the yellow background and the sulphur, the image sort of painted itself. It had the warm, afternoon summer tones I was going for......and it was all lit with one light. Oh, her wooden platform is a tongue depressor. I admit, I do respect her attention to detail. Thanks for sweeping through!!
