A bit of bullying and a couple of hoglets

This lasted for 3/4 hour and they moved no more than about 10cm before mum gave up!!! Baby was returned to the nest unharmed. Unfortunately I ran out of tape in the end.

Could the bird carcase have anything to do with this?

Dispite having spent this week trying to clear the rat nest area they are still there.

The Glendale Byker - The original focus of Byker was here at Byker Square. The Glendale is all that remains of the old streets and buildings, and even it is now closed and boarded up. I haven't been able to find any more history so far, but there's a bit more information and some photos here:

Oh My God.

He is a Spaz.

I can't handle it. I could bathe Clementine in the sink and she would sit there and take it.

Huck needs the big tub because he climbs out of the sink. Today he launched himself off of his turtle float and grabbed the towel that was along the rim of the bath and pulled himself almost all the way out. Of the Bathtub. He has no fear and he will be the death of me.

[ Best Large ] ... [ Zoo Babies ]

I returned to the zoo today. I haven't been since August!! I had to go in order to see Mercedes the polar bear before she leaves for the Highland Wildlife Park on October 18th. It was an exhausting day as usual (Edinburgh Zoo is all uphill) but I got a few decent shots.

Here, one of two new Red River Hog babies cuddles up to dad. These little hoglets were so cute, completely oblivious to everyone oohing and aahing around them because they were much too busy snuffling around in the mud like true little piggies. :-)

Shortly after posting the picture below this little fellow turned up again! Having previously rescued him from the cars in the street I found him back there - this little hedgehog's got a deathwish! We gave him some cat food (which the cat initially thought was for her - was very disappointed) and released him into the back garden where he'll hopefully stay!

A bus service that connects Padam with hamlets nearby. This was in 2003. In 2010 this road has been tarred, and there are more buses. Not necessary to sit on the roof tops now. For those interested in history..... please see the picture here: www.flickr.com/photos/hoglet/3761376253/ It was taken in 1981!

I have seen two very small hedgehogs in our garden, and assume this is the mother feeding along with one of them.

I think this picture describes them well - Ozzy being his usual outgoing uber-friendly self with a high interest in the camera (not because he knows his picture is getting taken, but because he enjoys sniffing the lense.. not idea why haha). & Then Dizzy, on the defense when the flash goes off because quick movements and loud noises and pretty much anything strange scares her. She's considerably friendly otherwise though. :]

So for anybody who may be interested in getting an African Pygmy Hedgehog, I can tell you a bit about them.

Check with your area/state to make sure it's legal! I don't remember off the top of my head which states don't allow people to legally own African Pygmy Hedgehogs, but make sure to check it out first.

Make sure the breeder you purchase from is one who handles their hedgies. If not handled the hoglets could be extremely frightened by human contact and with a temperament like that it obviously won't be a lot of fun having one. The quills hurt when they want them to!

& While we're on the subject of quills, I have been asked this before, but no hedgehogs' quills will not come out and stick into your skin like a porcupine's. However when they are younger their quills will occasionally fall out.

If you are picking from a litter of hedgies, choose by personality, not color! (Unless you have the time to handle a shy hedgie). The more outgoing and friendly ones are worth more as a pet than ones with a neat color. :]

Make sure to research! There are certain things a hedgehog can and cannot have. For example, never give your hedgehog cedar bedding. If digested the cedar could kill them.

If anybody has any questions, don't be afraid to ask!

- Oh and Ozzy and Dizzy will be breeding mid-March. Will keep everyone updated!

Overall, I would highly recommend a hedgehog for a pet. I'm just as excited to have them today as I was the day I got them. They're labeled as "exotic" pets, so the price for one usually ranges from $100 to $500. The quills don't hurt to pet when they are relaxed. (In the picture, Ozzy's are relaxed and Dizzy's are on the defense). They love to try to eat things they probably shouldn't so do keep an eye on them if you have them out. All they require for homing is pretty much what you'd have for a hamster. BUT they eat dry cat food, not hamster food! Their personalities are all individual, so keep that in mind! :]

This is great not only do I have three hoglets and the mother running around my garden they are living in a hog house I bought.

The adult spent most of the night packing the house with leaves and twigs it a wonder there's any room left inside for them.

Two hoglets wandered far and wide and one of the hoglets stayed with the adult.

Hoping to fatten them up ready for hibernation.

It's a shame that trying to feed the hoglets in the garden has brought unwanted guests.

My handsome man Alan posing in front of some flowers. No biggie.

Rooni for short. :)

My girlfriend and I went to pick this little guy up yesterday. He's a total grump right now, but I'm hoping that will change once he's settled into his new surroundings.

She's wanted a hedgehog for forever, so I decided to get one for our one year anniversary. We're like new parents, spazzing over everything. "No, that food isn't good enough for him!" "Do you think he's too cold, maybe we should keep him upstairs.." It's kind of funny actually.

I think one of my hoglets has gone, hope it's just wandered off to live by itself.

young hoglet pops into the garden

I've been deleting photos from my hard drive in an effort to make space for future photos. In the process, I came across these photos of Twinkle's first litter of baby hedgehogs, born in the summer of 2012.

This one was my favourite.

Today seemed to be "show off your ugly but cute babies" day on Twitter.

DSLR Camera Trap:

“Wild Strawberry Thief”

Here in the UK the hedgehog is one of the nations most loveable nocturnal mammals. They are easy to identify with its armoured coat of thousand’s of prickly spines, an adorable pointed furry face, small eyes & snuffling nose.

Hedgehogs are savages when it comes to eating and they will travel around 1-2 miles each night in search of a meal. They munch on a variety of foods such as beetles, worms, slugs, fruits and almost anything it can fit into its mouth. There has been recorded events of them eating chicks and eggs from ground nesting birds.

The average size of an adult is around 20 to 30cm & weigh a whopping 2kg.

The average lifespan of a wild hedgehog is around 3-4 years . Sadly a large majority of hedgehogs will pass away within the first year of its life.

Habitat: They are usually found living in and round urban and rural gardens, grassland, mixed woodland, heathland and farmland.

Breeding: Females will often give birth to a litter of 3-7 hoglets between April and September. Males do not assist in helping raise the young.

Hibernation: This usually starts in November and ends around Easter depending on weather conditions. The hibernation nest is made of a mixture of leaves, straw or dry grasses that will be tucked away in hidden areas that offers suitable protection from the elements and predators.

The State of Britain’s Hedgehogs 2022 report reveals hedgehogs have declined by 30% – 75% across different areas of the countryside since 2000. Hedgehogs appear to be declining in large numbers with the total population currently unknown.

A few of the biggest threats to hedgehogs are habitat loss, changes in farming practices, removal of hedgerows and the use of chemicals that kills off it’s food supply.

Conservation status: Hedgehogs are a Red list species and Protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

One of the Red River Hog Piglets at Belfast Zoo. (map)

For some reason a visitor had thrown in a load of sliced bread for the red river hogs to eat and this little one was fighting with a slice all by himself...

Our first Hedgehog since February 2024. Not sure why it took so long but it was worth the wait. This HH does have a bit of a dodgy hind leg but it seems to be able to move about easily and it doesn't slow him/her down.

Hopefully she/he takes to our newly refurbished accommodation and feeding station

Please be aware we also have 2 foxes that visit our garden every night, hence the egg shells and dog kibble out in the open. Both foxes are recovering well from serious bouts of mange thanks to the advice we were given from our local wildlife rescue centre.

Found four sounders (groups) earlier today and although the weather was terrible with it raining most of the time, the sun did break through for this shot.

Two sows were present, but I used the trees as cover to get close without them spotting me.

At one point a sow was no more than a couple of metres away and I had one of those feelings that I was going to come face to face with her as I poked my head around the tree!

Baby Hedgehog belonging to my niece. She surprised me and brought them to my work to show me. So cute, but pokey. :)
