Our Hedgehog has become quite the industrious worker as it fills its den with hay for the upcoming winter hibernation. At least that is what we hope he/she is doing. This 18min video takes place over approximately 4.5hrs but we removed all but the interesting bits and sped up some parts to reduce the overall size of this video.

Well the correct term should be hoglet, but piglet sounds cuter and you definitely can't get much cuter than this.
I know I know, I said that I was going to ease up on the boar images, but how can I not share this cheeky little thing on a Sunday evening.
By the looks of her snout, she has been very busy learning how to search for grubs and worms from mum.
To lye on the ground within a few metres while these animals root the ground all around you and then move on to the next patch, without giving you a second thought is testament to their unaggressive behaviour.
The sounder, from which this little one belonged were pure wild in every sense of the word. If I moved just that little bit too quickly it would startle them, but as I was blending in with my surroundings and at ground level, I gave them nothing to fear, including mum.
I just wish everyone could see them in this way as there are still too many people out there who despise them.
10 minutes with them like this and I bet I could turn at least 50% of them into liking, or even just tolerating them.
It is not how this animal behaves around us, but how we behave around this animal, which defines us and the boar.

Hedgehog
Erinaceus europaeus
Captured this image when I delivered a donation of much-needed newspaper, old towels, cat food and wooly hats (used as hedgehog sleeping bags) to our local hedgehog rescue centre.
This little guy is an "Autumn Juvenile", they get a lot of these in at this time of year. They haven't got enough body weight to survive hibernation when they're this small so the carer at the centre has to keep them awake and fed by syringe every two hours through the night until they are big enough to go into hibernation safely. The centre takes in around 400 hedgehogs a year just in the South Staffordshire/northern West Midlands region.
If you find a hedgehog that's either injured or out in the open in daylight (they are nocturnal and if out in the day they are in distress) you should contact your vet or local hedgehog carer/rescue centre.
If you're in either southern Staffordshire or the northern West Midlands region contact West Midlands Hedgehog Rescue: www.wmhr.org.uk
Outside of these areas contact the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and they will tell you who the hedgehog carer is for your area: www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk

My neighbour and myself recently bought a hedgehog home each - we had a pair of adults already visiting but the Hedgehog Trust gave us two youngish hoglets
Around 8 weeks old. Already driving their mother crazy. 2004.
Today seemed to be "show off your ugly but cute babies" day on Twitter.
Please ignore the Some Rights Reserved designated by Flickr. They are extremely out of date
sniffing the world. used to Pa's voice, Pa's hands. they were what warmed it up [and sitting in box on stove] - would curl up at anyone elses voice too loud.
2 weeks old - gone off to pembrokeshire hogspital.

This is great not only do I have three hoglets and the mother running around my garden they are living in a hog house I bought.
The adult spent most of the night packing the house with leaves and twigs it a wonder there's any room left inside for them.
Two hoglets wandered far and wide and one of the hoglets stayed with the adult.
Hoping to fatten them up ready for hibernation.
This is the moment she spotted me and came over to check me out.
She had eight piglets with her and you can see one of them behind the tree. This was the reason why she came and checked me out! No aggression, just saying "that's close enough!"

My last boar image for a while.
This was taken a couple of years ago and shows two sows with hoglets, although it seemed as though only one of the sows in this photograph was lactating so for some reason the other sow did not conceive this year, for unknown reasons as both were sexually mature.
A nice shot as apart from the sow, which has obviously spotted me (with a blade of grass drooped over her snout) they are all going about their normal day to day activities, which is of course, searching for food.
I had located them and was sat with my back against a tree, with my knees pushed up to rest my camera on. This was taken at 400mm and it was surprising how close they got before they actually spotted me, but as I was completely still and the wind was in my face, my camera shutter gave me away.

There's five hoglets and one adult squeezed into the hog house. It must be so hot in there (and smelly!), mum keeps pushing a couple of the hoglets out so she can get some fresh air and then she snoozes underneath an adjacent plant pot for a bit :)

Had almost given up on getting a photo for today when Dad found this baby hedgehog(called a hedgehoglet apparently). Brought it from the streets where it might have been run over into the back garden. Not long after this photo it ran (slowly) off into the field.

We have a new addition to our family - herbie the orphaned hedgehog only survivor of his litter currently weighing 140gms and approx 4 weeks old. Will be hand rearing with help and hopefully releasing into the wild before winter.
The Algerian Hedgehog is one of the few mammals that inhabit the Maltese Islands. There are 17 species of hedgehogs in the world, four of them in Africa. The Algerian Hedgehog is found from Morocco to Libya and is the only African species of hedgehog that is found outside Africa. It was introduced in Spain and France and on the islands off the coast of Africa, such as the Canary Islands and Malta. Its Maltese name is derived from Arabic (Qunfud) and the Maltese word was first listed by De Soldanis. There are various Maltese expressions which compare one to the hedgehog - none of them are very complimentary! The English name was coined in the Middle Ages, and, as the name implies, means a hog that lives in hedges. The hedgehog’s diet usually consists of a variety of insects and snails, and occasionally some small vertebrates. Like other mammals, the hedgehog relies on scent both to find its mate and to detect food. Hedgehogs often make purring noises when they are content. Hedgehogs are unmistakable because of their shape and spines, which are essentially hollow hairs of stiff keratin filled with pockets of air. The spines act as a means of defence against its predators. The hedgehog rolls itself into a tight ball when threatened, with its spines pointing outwards. Hedgehogs also raise their quills and make hissing noises when alarmed. Not much is known about the breeding biology of wild hedgehogs, primarily because they are active mostly at night. Their breeding season runs between October and March. The gestation period of the Algerian hedgehog ranges from 30 to 40 days. A female can bear between three and 10 hoglets and can have two litters in a season. Hoglets are born blind, but gain vision quickly. The spines begin to erupt from underneath the skin and cover their body within 36 hours after birth. Hedgehogs reach sexual maturity at about eight to ten weeks of age and they do not mate for life or engage in pair-bonding. In the wild, the Algerian Hedgehog lives up to seven years. Many have their life cut short on our roads, especially country roads, when they are run over by cars. It does not require much of an effort to avoid killing these animals and efforts should be made to avoid them. Stopping and waiting for them to cross the road is the best option. They are quite fast and one won’t have to wait for very long actually! Photo by Nick Dobbs, Malta 12-08-18
I was so pleased to keep finding my hedgehog feeding station cleared of food I was thinking how they would be pilling on the weight ready for hibernation.
Seeing rats in the garden has lead to a lot of digging and the removal of some undergrowth hopefully my resident stray cat will take care of the problem.
Harley has this silly wrinkle under his chin that makes it look like hes smiling and its just to darn cute!
Found the boar again earlier and managed to get close enough for some half decent images. Two sows were present and they were quite tolerant of my presence, which made it a lot easier to get closer to the little ones.
Every now and then the sow would stare at me and give a grunt, but apart from that they were very relaxed and it was great spending time with them again.
Scientific classification

The Hedgehog – An Gráinneog (Erinaceus europaeus)
The hedgehog is a familiar species in the Irish countryside. It is a small creature - weighing between 600-900 grammes and is about 25 cm in length. Its back is covered with over 5,000 brown, grey, and white coloured spines and it has coarse hair on its belly and its face. When a hedgehog feels threatened, it rolls itself into a ball and its spines help protect it from many predators.
Habitat & Diet
The hedgehog habitat is mainly hedgerows, woodlands and meadows, but they are also commonly found in sub-urban gardens. Within their habitat, they normally have a few sleeping nests. As they are nocturnal creatures, it is not until after dusk that they leave these nests to forage for food. The hedgehog rustles through leaf litter looking for insects such as beetles and caterpillars, and invertebrates including earthworms and slugs. They also feed on fruits and berries, especially in the early autumn when these food sources are readily available.
Hibernation
During the winter months, when food supplies become more scarce, hedgehogs enter into a period of hibernation. Hibernation is akin to a period of deep sleep. The hedgehogs body temperature drops to match the temperature of its surroundings and its heart rate and metabolism slow down. It lives off its fat reserves until the end of hibernation which is usually in March/April.
Breeding
Hedgehogs breed between March and October. After a gestation period of about 32 days, three to five hedgehog ‘pups’ are born. Within about two weeks, the pups’ eyes start to open and spines begin to appear on their backs. They are independent at six weeks old and as hedgehogs are solitary creatures, the pups then go their separate ways.
Interesting Hedgehog Facts
Hedgehogs have poor eyesight but a great sense of smell - so good that they can even smell the scent of an earthworm underground
Hedgehogs can swim but can become trapped in pools and ponds with steep sides
As many as 500 fleas live amongst a hedgehogs’ spines
Hedgehogs can wander for up to 3 km a night in search of food
Young hedgehogs are called ‘pups’ or ‘hoglets’
The Latin for ‘hedgehog’ is Erinaceus which means ‘spiky wall’
The Irish word for hedgehog is ‘gráinneog’ - meaning ‘horrible one’
Hedgehogs occasionally perform an unusual ritual of ‘self-anointing’. This occurs when they come across a strong or an unfamiliar scent. The hedgehog will lick and bite the source and then form scented frothy saliva which it pastes over its spines with its tongue. Some believe that this ‘anointing’ camouflages the hedgehog with the scent of the area and possibly provides a poison or a source of infection to predators that come into contact with its spines.

After several months of hibernation elsewhere in our neighbourhood, a hedgehog has finally reappeared very early on Monday morning, he/she did some snuffling about, checked out it's den under our shed. Hopefully this becomes an normal event as we approach the spring, though it might return to hibernation given the weather forecast over the next week or so.
I was so pleased to keep finding my hedgehog feeding station cleared of food I was thinking how they would be pilling on the weight ready for hibernation.

This lasted for 3/4 hour and they moved no more than about 10cm before mum gave up!!! Baby was returned to the nest unharmed. Unfortunately I ran out of tape in the end.
Could the bird carcase have anything to do with this?

Oh My God.
He is a Spaz.
I can't handle it. I could bathe Clementine in the sink and she would sit there and take it.
Huck needs the big tub because he climbs out of the sink. Today he launched himself off of his turtle float and grabbed the towel that was along the rim of the bath and pulled himself almost all the way out. Of the Bathtub. He has no fear and he will be the death of me.
[ Best Large ] ... [ Zoo Babies ]
I returned to the zoo today. I haven't been since August!! I had to go in order to see Mercedes the polar bear before she leaves for the Highland Wildlife Park on October 18th. It was an exhausting day as usual (Edinburgh Zoo is all uphill) but I got a few decent shots.
Here, one of two new Red River Hog babies cuddles up to dad. These little hoglets were so cute, completely oblivious to everyone oohing and aahing around them because they were much too busy snuffling around in the mud like true little piggies. :-)
Shortly after posting the picture below this little fellow turned up again! Having previously rescued him from the cars in the street I found him back there - this little hedgehog's got a deathwish! We gave him some cat food (which the cat initially thought was for her - was very disappointed) and released him into the back garden where he'll hopefully stay!
