A tour through the history of the Diocese of Würzburg
The were the first Christians in and around Würzburg at least since the mission of the Irish missionaries Kilian, Kolonat and Totnan who around 689 suffered the martyrdom. Boniface the creation of stable church structures is due to him. A center of earlier Christianization probably the monastery Karlburg at Karlstadt (district of Main-Spessart) may have been, which is associated with the Sacred Immina, as well as the of the Holy Leoba, a relative of Boniface, directed monastery of Tauberbischofsheim.
Burkard - the first bishop of Würzburg
End 741, no later than 742, consecrated archbishop Boniface Burkard first bishop of Würzburg. Burkard founded the St. Andrew's Abbey, on whose ground today stands the over 950-year-old parish church of St. Burkard. The life of faith in Franconia seems to have taken a rapid rise: Würzburg the Gospel soon proclaimed at the Upper Main, Steigerwald as well as with the Saxonians in Central and Northern Germany. The Diocese of Paderborn, from Main missionized, still today the Holy Kilian reveres as second patron.
In the Middle Ages, Würzburg had a high rank: imperial and court days took place, the wedding of emperor Frederick Barbarossa, also a German national council (1287). Numerous religious communities settled here; 1221 was born in Würzburg the first Franciscan monastery north of the Alps.
Reformation and Peasants' War brought changes
Würzburg under bishop Bruno saw the stable time of the Empire; later the conflicts in the Investiture Controversy, in which Bishop Adalbero played a prominent role. Also of social and religious grievances the city was not spared, in the aftermath of which Reformation and Peasants' War brought profound changes. A victim of the sectarian clashes was the martyr priest Liborius Wagner - now a warning voice for reconciliation.
To consolidation and a revival led the diocese especially bishop Julius Echter of Mespelbrunn. In addition to the Juliusspital other hospitals and charitable institutions emerged. Were promoted education and school system, in 1582 founded the university. Deep wounds inflicted the conflicts of the Thirty Years War. Swedish troops occupied the fortress Marienberg.
Baroque time - golden period
This confusion in the 18th century was followed by a long period of peace and prosperity. The Baroque era let flourish art and culture to amazing accomplishments. The art-minded prince-bishops from the house of Schönborn brought skilled artists to Würzburg. The construction of the residence and the Baroque transformation of the city began. On the country-side local artists created serene baroque churches. Church life flourished in solemn processions, festive liturgies and exhilarated music.
As a result of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, the Bishopric of Würzburg perished with other ecclesiastical territories. The secularization of 1803 also the cultural and charitable commitment of many monasteries ended.
1821 the Diocese of Würzburg arose newly
From now on church life sought new paths. 1848, for the first time the German bishops met in Würzburg for an Episcopal Conference. New religious communities emerged which tackled the social distress of the industrial age. The Catholic associative network began to constitute itself and to become influential.
In the culture war since 1871, the Catholic Church stood under state pressure. Then there were conflicts in the course of theological education, the First Vatican Council and the anti-modernism. After the misery of the First World War and the inflation period, the church struggle of the Third Reich in Lower Franconia became very violent. The solidarity of Catholics with their church and bishop Matthias Ehrenfried was demonstrated in the upturn of pilgrimages to the grave of Kilian from the year 1935 on.
The consequences of World War II
On March 16, 1945, with the city of Würzburg also the churches were reduced to a pile of rubble. Bishop Matthias Ehrenfried died in 1948; he was succeeded by bishop Julius Döpfner. 1957 Döpfner was appointed bishop of Berlin. His successor, Josef Stangl, who guided the destinies of the diocese until 1979, for his paternal and benevolent nature today is still remembered of many Catholics.
In 1967, the rebuilding of the cathedral was completed. A response to the new challenges of the church by the presence found the Second Vatican Council, which was attended by bishop Josef Stangl and auxiliary bishop Alfons Kempf. For the implementation of the Council's decisions in Germany, the synod of the dioceses of the Federal Republic worked from 1972 to 1975 in Würzburg Cathedral. In 1968, the Diocesan Council of Catholics in the Diocese of Würzburg met for the first time. The involvement of the laity in the Church henceforth will become increasingly important. 1979 Dr. Paul-Werner Scheele in the long line of Würzburg chief shepherds became the 87th bishop. On 14 July 2003, after almost 25 years of fruitful ministry for the Diocese of Würzburg, Pope John Paul II. the age-related resignation of Dr. Paul-Werner Scheele as bishop of Würzburg accepted.
On September 19, 2004, Dr. Friedhelm Hofmann in Würzburg Kiliansdom in the office of bishop was inaugurated. Pope John Paul II. him on 25 June 2004 88th Bishop of Würzburg had appointed.
my boyfriend got a great new job (yay!) and needed a small bag to take him there… just large enough to hold a newspaper, thermos, wallet and so on. it also had to fit into his tiny locker and be easily checkable by security. i had big plans for his first leather bag, but he wanted something really simple. something just like mine - just bigger :) he selected a beautiful grey leather, silver hardware (slightly larger than what i usually use), and a green lining. he really enjoyed customizing the pockets according to his needs - so cute! this is probably the most versatile and used thing i ever made for him!!
Sculpture by Will Wagenaar
3 years ago, I started to create a pile of parts that were slated for a big, silver bird.
In late April, the final missing piece was found and this project... took flight.
He was named for his noble and expressive, single tail feather.
It reminded me of the hats worn by The Three Musketeers.
The lead character in the novel is d'Artagnan.
Fearing that a name from 19th century, French literature might slow him down a bit,
he's taken on a more aerodynamic nickname: "DART"
I ordered him from Walmart.com & picked him up at my local store today. I only paid $20.63, with tax, for him. A lot of the Lalas are on sale on Walmart.com.

I was quite disappointed when Emille contacted me earlier in this year to shoot his and Keisha's wedding. I was unable to do it as I would be away on travels to shoot something else I was already committed to. So I would not miss the chance to shoot some pre-baby arrival photos with them when he approached me about doing it.
Emille and I were grad students at UWI together and were 'book majors'. :0)- he in creative writing and me in literature. Keisha I also came to learn was into literature, majoring in that also.
So I thought it might be fitting to do a shoot centered around their love for reading and creative writing. Despite the threat of rain we were able to pull off a great shoot. Congratulations on the new baby which was named after the title of a book by a Nobel prize winning African American author. :0). Emille Mrs. Higgins would be particularly proud- and amused. lol.

Tonto finds himself surrounded by the Butch Cavendish gang. And the Lone Ranger is nowhere in sight.
I found all the Lone Ranger dudes except The Ranger. I've been looking in my parents attic with no luck. Hopefully I will find him soon. This ones for you Skip.

On Saturday 2 September, Assange solidarity activists worldwide held an Australian Embassy Day appealing to the Australian government to intervene in the politically driven case against Julian Assange. In London they gathered outside Australia House on the Strand.
[ I hope to post a few more photos from last weekend later this week. ]
They were also demonstrating against the continued imprisonment of Julian Assange and the US extradition proceedings, for revealing the truth about US, UK and other Western war crimes, the mass surveillance of their populations and other crimes.
Meanwhile, the war crimes themselves go largely ignored and the political leaders responsible for them are not only immunized against prosecution, but several are growing wealthy on the basis of their contacts with their overseas accomplices across the Middle East and elsewhere.
Apart from last Saturday's protest, there are also weekly protests in solidarity with Assange outside Australia House in London every Wednesday between 3 and 5 pm.
There are many good reasons why Assange should be released, but arguably the three most important are as follows -
Freedom of Speech: Assange's case raises important concerns about freedom of the press and whistleblowers' rights, which are crucial for a transparent society.
Health Concerns: Julian Assange's physical and mental health deteriorated in prison. Releasing him could provide access to better medical care and reduce the risk of serious health issues.
Human Rights: His prolonged detention without trial or conviction goes against fundamental human rights principles.

Try to capture him and the Greek Sea God of Antiquity, Proteus, would suddenly change form and escape. In his description of Quisqualis indica, Georg Eberhard Rumphius (1627-1702), refers to Proteus to qualify the name he gave to this pretty plant. Rumphius - a merchant of the Dutch East Indies Trading Company on the Indonesian island Ambon - was an avid naturalist. After he went blind of glaucoma he pressed his wife and family and servants to further assist him in his endeavors. His notes were later published in a grand set of volumes in The Netherlands.
His writing shows tongue-in-cheek humor and a fine sense of punning. Thus he puns on the native word for Quisqualis as 'udani' (in which the 'u' is slightly aspirated to '(h)u'). Alternatively, Rumphius - originally from Germany - may have been used to the pronunciation of Dutch in Zeeland [many VOC officials came from that area] in which the 'h' is often dropped and the 'g' at the end of the word is very weak). He doesn't give 'udani''s actual meaning, but it sounds homonynously to Rumphius as the Dutch 'hoedanig'. This means something like: 'what way is it now?!', or: 'in which way', or 'what kind': 'Quis qualis' in Latin.
Rumphius is perplexed by the forms this plant can take; he's observed it in his garden: then it is tree-like, then it's a vine, again it's thorny, then smooth again. Like the God Proteus, it defies definition: hence 'Quis qualis', by botanists later joined together as 'Quisqualis'.
Quisqualis indica is found all over the tropics and goes by a variety of names. The most well-known are, I think, Burma Creeper or Rangoon Creeper. And as Rumphius writes: it's not native either to Ambon but appears to have been imported to that isle from Sulawesi.
The Taman Tasik Perdana here in Kuala Lumpur is still in the throes of an entire makeover and renovation. It's becoming really nice, and great strides have been made forward since the last time I was here this past Summer. But our Quisqualis has remarkably found its ground in what was once the 'Edible Garden', of kitchen garden plants. No doubt, this, too, will be changed and corrected...
(PS Those interested in the Latin and Dutch texts of Rumphius's Herbarium Amboinense do well to look at it through 'Botanicus.org'. There its pages are scanned neatly and clearly. Beware: there's also a word-scanned version on the internet in which all the medial esses come out as 'f', and, among other faults , the 'c' is confused with the 'e', etc.)

Queen Biography
Who is Queen ?
The Queen arrived in Norfolk after making a special pilgrimage ahead of the 70th anniversary of her father's death while staying at Prince Philips' beloved Wood Farm country home for the first time without him.
The 95-year-old monarch usually spends the festive period at Sandringham, but she has remained at Windsor Castle since the autumn as a covid precaution and she held silent Christmas celebrations with close family last month.
However, in preparation for her father George VI's birthday in 1952, the Queen made a special helicopter trip followed by a short drive to Norfolk.
A source told the Mail on Sunday: "Everything is getting in order for the Queen's visit.
"We've been told that she will be staying at Wood Farm, rather than the main house, which is good, as she always had a special place in her heart."
The Queen has stayed in the cottage before, but it will be the first time since Philip died in April last year.
The last time she visited the estate was in early November and normally she would have spent the weekend after Halloween at Sandringham with Philip and she didn't want to miss out.
However, just a week later, aides at Buckingham Palace were forced to announce that it was "with a heavy heart" that the Queen would be unable to attend the Remembrance Sunday parade at the Cenotaph due to a "back sprain".
It was, according to him, one of the best days ever. “The best, plus one”, he said.
In his seven year old mind, it seemed as if nothing could beat what he had going on at that moment. But when the thrills keep coming, how do you describe a day’s unfolding adventures? Apparently, it is better than better, plus one. and one more. plus another.
What’s the recipe for a best day plus one?
It doesn’t take much bright and shiny to please him.
Here's what he reported to me.
1. 7 brand new fuzzy goslings tottering across the path behind their mother.
2. The bright orange belly of a rarely seen oriole bird skittering across the water.
3. Counting turtles
4. And rescuing baby ones.
5. Counting goose eggs.
6. And listening to their anxious mother.
7. Retrieving 12 lost golf balls, which may or may not require you to wade into the mud. (I think mud could qualify for plus two. Just sayin.)
8. Finding a golf ball with the Vice Presidential Seal upon it. This has impressed him. I think he slept with it under his pillow.
9. And he’s asked me not to forget the two white butterflies in a field of flowers, but especially not to forget that they were spotted from a bridge he stood on. Clearly, bridges are the shiznit. Maybe not as rad as mud, but whatever.
jeez, it's not as if he has never seen a turtle, saved a worm or two, or retrieved a wayward golf ball before.
I just think he was particularly present this day. acutely engaged. tuned in plus one. and then some.

Details and History
The Library of Congress website offers a multitude of historical images, many with no known restrictions on use. This image is derived from the 1860-1863 stereograph, possibly by Edwin Emerson, depicting Troy N.Y., C.F.H. (Charles F. Himes) and Prof. O.N. Rood, Warren's house in background, looking n.
Both were members of the Amateur Photographic Exchange club, which functioned from 1860-1863 when its secretary was called to war. Many of the earliest surviving stereographs in the LOC collection were generated via this exchange. As noted in a brief history (Image 1952, vol1, issue2, page4) one of their correspondents was Oliver Wendell Holmes. He invented the Holmes stereoscope and gave the design away. The instrument proved so popular it drove most rivals out of the market.

A great run ot in the first pre-season match for Longridge with many trialists showing their potential. Ten goals including a hat-trick for Paul Turner who is looking like he will have a great season in front of him.
This time last week we had made the humane decision and the following day took him to the vet. We picked up his ashes today. We took our vet and her staff some flowers so say thank you, afterall they looked after him too for all 13 years he was in our lives.
God we miss him.
on a sunny Sunday afternoon, my girlfriend and I along with your sister we left something out there taking pictures, I like this treatment, reminds me a little tumblr or whatever, is just different.
I noticed him on our deck just outside the glass doors at our pond. He was almost 3 feet long. I was amazed how close he let me get. This was close enough for me. They have a viscous bite which injects an anti-coagulant to insure that you bleed profusely. No thanks!
so pleased after only ordering him Wednesday, I was expecting him to take ages or some conundrum saying he's not available after all and never was one of those things, since I've never ordered from the site before but it does seem to the site to mess with peeps but I am sorry I judged and glad he's finally here, I did have my doubts about him being hard to find him being a boy but I am so happy that wasn't the case, I seem to be getting a boy luck lately that's good I don't want to jinx things so touch wood all boys in the future are easy to find.
Hmmm... hey, Shudda... could this be Clyde's famous cousin in show biz? I need to find a doll like this!

A cactus (plural: cacti, cactuses, or cactus)[3] is a member of the plant family Cactaceae, a family comprising ca 127 genera with some 1750 known species of the order Caryophyllales.[4] The word "cactus" derives, through Latin, from the Ancient Greek κάκτος, kaktos, a name originally used by Theophrastus for a spiny plant whose identity is not certain.[5] Cacti occur in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Most cacti live in habitats subject to at least some drought. Many live in extremely dry environments, even being found in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on earth. Cacti show many adaptations to conserve water. Almost all cacti are succulents, meaning they have thickened, fleshy parts adapted to store water. Unlike many other succulents, the stem is the only part of most cacti where this vital process takes place. Most species of cacti have lost true leaves, retaining only spines, which are highly modified leaves. As well as defending against herbivores, spines help prevent water loss by reducing air flow close to the cactus and providing some shade. In the absence of leaves, enlarged stems carry out photosynthesis. Cacti are native to the Americas, ranging from Patagonia in the south to parts of western Canada in the north—except for Rhipsalis baccifera, which also grows in Africa and Sri Lanka.
Eight men commence ministry for the Church
Story and photos by Ambria Hammel | Nov. 15, 2010 | The Catholic Sun
A baptism at St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish in Cave Creek last week marked a double cause for celebration for one man in particular.
The waters of baptism signaled the first step of a lifelong journey in faith for the 2-month-old boy and the first time the celebrant — the infant’s grandfather — administered the sacrament as a permanent deacon for the Church.
One day prior, Deacon Robert Torigian was among eight men, all married with children, whom Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted ordained to the diaconate Nov. 6 at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral. They join 239 permanent deacons serving the Phoenix Diocese from the altar, within parish ministries and in the greater community.
“I know that each of them has what it takes to be an effective, caring deacon and a powerful witness of Jesus, the Servant of all,” said Deacon Doug Bogart, associate director of education and formation for the diaconate.
He described them as smart and creative. The new deacons, ages 42-60, have a strong commitment to service, particularly to the bishop, their parishes and to the poor, Deacon Bogart added.
Bishop Olmsted told a crowded cathedral filled with extended family, friends, priests and fellow deacons that deacons represent the charity of the Church. Therefore, he said, they will see the new deacons as disciples seeking “not to be served, but to serve.”
Then he spoke directly to his eight newest “sons.”
“You receive sacred authority to teach in the name of the Church. Such teachings are badly needed,” the bishop said. He cautioned them to resist the temptation to omit any teaching that may not be popular.
“Hand it on faithfully in its organic wholeness,” the bishop said.
One by one all eight deacon candidates knelt in front of the bishop, placed their hands in his and promised their fidelity.
Then the entire church offered a litany of supplication while the candidates fully prostrated themselves down the cathedral’s center aisle. It marked their act of submission.
When they got up, the new deacons spread themselves along the foot of the altar where priests vested them for the first time. Jesuit Father Dave Klein vested his brother Deacon Tom Klein, who will be the only deacon serving St. Francis Xavier Parish.
Deacon Klein also cited his other brother, a St. Thomas the Apostle parishioner and longtime Vincentian, as influential in his discernment.
“It’s been a lifetime evolution for me. There was no lightning bolt moment,” Deacon Klein said in his final hour before ordination.
Deacon Klein, who also works as a trial lawyer, will head the parish’s busy marriage preparation program. He hopes to encourage parishioners of all ages to become more active in the Church.
Once vested, the deacons knelt a final time in front of Bishop Olmsted as he symbolically handed each of them the Book of the Gospels.
“Now you are not only hearers of the Gospels, but also its ministers,” the bishop said.
The deacons finished their ordination Mass from the altar and helped distribute the Eucharist.
Hope for the future
“We, today, witnessed the living faith being handed on from generation to generation so that the Church of Christ will never be without the sacraments of the three holy orders of the Church,” Bishop Eduardo A. Nevares said during a brief program at a post-ordination reception.
Providing for the future of the Church, especially by administering the sacrament of baptism, is what several new deacons looked forward to in their first weeks of ordained ministry. One had eight baptisms lined up during his first week.
“That is the joy and source of hope,” said Deacon David Runyan, a retired meteorologist who will serve St. Andrew the Apostle Parish in Chandler and El Cristo Rey Parish at the Grand Canyon in the summertime.
Deacon Torigian, who baptized his grandson, plans to remind older Catholics of their baptismal obligation to come to know and serve the Lord, he said.
The new deacon and longtime physician assistant should know a thing or two about service. He devoted so much time to pastoral ministry in his native Detroit that several deacons invited him to consider joining the diaconate. He finished formation in Phoenix.
Outside of parish work at St. Gabriel, Deacon Torigian will also help the diocesan Office of Natural Family Planning develop curriculum for Catholic high school students.
Deacon Jim Gall, who for a while didn’t know what a deacon was but always liked to serve others, also looks forward to living the deacon motto of servant leadership.
He gained a deeper prayer life during the formation process. It’s helped him see things with spiritual eyes instead of reacting based on temperament, he said.
“I could never go back to the way I was,” Deacon Gall said.
Most new deacons said they gained a deeper spirituality and strengthened their marriage and family relationships during formation.
“I just thank God that I finally said yes,” said Deacon Al Homiski, a parish administrator at St. Bernadette in Scottsdale. He admitted putting off repeated invitations to join the diaconate for years.
The five-year formation process in Phoenix involves two years of weekly Kino classes, monthly diaconate meetings with candidates and their wives, practicums including at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and twice daily prayer. The experience is enough to impact the entire family.
Deacon Ron Johnson saw a noticeable change in the spiritual lives of his three children as well during formation. The psychologist first felt called to the diaconate during a Cursillo weekend seven years ago and is looking forward to being the first Spanish-speaking deacon in the Flagstaff area.
He’ll also travel with Fr. Pat Mowrer throughout the north deanery supporting other parishes and missions.
Deacon Jason Robinson said he was always attracted to serving the Church. He applied to the priesthood after high school and entered further discernment.
He soon met his wife through a singles ministry and continued to search for his niche in the Church.
“I had this passion for the Church kind of from the inside, yet I was a working man,” the software developer said, “so I was always a bridge.”
He thought about entering the diaconate later in life. A personal invitation to the diaconate expedited his formation and ordination.
His ministry will include prison and Native American outreach plus parish work.
“Thank you for responding to God,” Deacon Jim Trant, director of the diaconate told the diocese’s newest deacons, “for doing and acting upon His will.”

Drag him out your window
Dragging out the dead
Singing I miss you
Snakes and ladders flip the lid
Out pops the cracker
Smacks you in the head
Knifes you in the neck
Kicks you in the teeth
Steel toe caps
Takes all your credit cards
Get up get the guns
Get the axe
Get the flan in the face
The flan in the face
The flan in the face
Dance you fucker dance you fucker
Don't you dare
Don't you dare
Don't you flan in the face
Take it with the love its given
Take it with a pinch of salt
Take it to the taxman
Let me back
Let me back
I promise to be good
Don't look in the mirror at the face you don't recognize
Help me, call the doctor, put me inside
Put me inside
Put me inside
Put me inside
Put me inside
I keep the wolf from the door
But he calls me up
Calls me on the phone
Tells me all the ways that he's gonna mess me up
Steal all my children if I don't pay the ransom
And I'll never see them again if I squeal to the cops. . . .
Walking like giant cranes
And with my X-ray eyes I strip you naked
in a tight little world
are you on the list?
Stepford wives who are we to complain?
Investments and dealers
Investments and dealers
Cold wives and mistresses
Cold wives and Sunday papers
City boys in First Class don't know they're born little
Someone else is gonna come and clean it up
Born and raised for the job
Someone always does
I wish you'd get up get over
get up, get over and turn the tape off
I keep the wolf from the door
But he calls me up
Calls me on the phone
Tells me all the ways that he's gonna mess me up
Steal all my children if I don't pay the ransom
And I'll never see them again if I squeal to the cops
So I just go ooh ooh ooh ooh
