Richland Balsam Overlook - Highest Point on the Blue Ridge Parkway Motorway - Elevation 6,053 ft. above sea level.

This is one of my favorite overlooks. Every season of the year is a fascinating one and none more so than late summer/early fall. The Monarch Butterflies regularly frequent this overlook along with Caney Fork Overlook. It blooms with SOMETHING from early spring through frost. At the moment it is showing a TON of Green-Headed Coneflower and the Joe Pie Weed has come out in profusion this last week. I was delighted to see the New England Aster beginning to open because that seems to be what the Monarch REALLY love as they migrate south to Mexico for the winter.

We were extremely surprised to find Monarchs today . . . at least four of them (probably more but I saw four together at the same time) because it's early. Don't know what that portends for the future, but they were a delight to behold!!!

NH-21 in the Himalaya Mountains of Jammu and Kashmir state in northern India is the "Highest Motorable Road In The World" crossing 5 mountain passes over 5000 meters / 15,000 feet. The 475 km spectacular mountain road journey runs between the Tibetan City of Leh and the Indian resort town of Manali. The highest pass is over 16,000 feet elevation and altitude sickness can be a problem. The landscape is mostly desolate with a few road house restaurant and fuel stops operated by Tibetans. A truly amazing journey through one of the world's "no man's lands"!

This is the first time I take a picture of Cagliari from the plane...it's a bit strange considering that I admired this view so many times during the years spent "abroad". And the most curioous thing of all is that my feeling in front of this view, this time that I was coming from Strasbourg, has been so different from all other times...Simply, I didn't feel the same emotion when landing again in Sardinia. That's a pity, and I really can't say why.

I've always found it easier to draw and paint on a small scale

At the highest point of the village of Evoramonte rises the Tower/Palace of Evoramonte commonly considered as the “ex-libris” of the village. The Tower/ Palace of Evoramonte was built by the Dukes of Bragança D. Teodósio and D. Jaime as a symbol of its power reflected in the tie of Manueline reminiscences that is the symbolic mark of the heraldry of the House of Bragança.

Its design is attributed to Arrudas Architects, famous for the design of the well-known Torre de Belém, in Lisbon, in Italian style and is a unique example throughout the Iberian Peninsula.

Visible many miles away, the Tower/Palace of Evoramonte is a regular quadrangle with four angularly arranged towers and has three floors externally marked by a continuous rounded cord. The interior has 3 rooms supported by 4 columns each and connected by a spiral staircase that also allows access to the terrace which enjoys a spectacular 360º view on the Alentejo landscape.

The Highest Apple (Runrig)

At present

All you were is with me

My eyes closed, my memory confident

Standing here watching

Each hill and shoreline

With the seed you left

Still growing

The garden is well stocked

With mighty trees

With fruit growing for the whole world

Ripe, sweet

And bitter apples

And the one apple

That is beyond reach

The winds will blow

And the sun will shine

From generation to generation

Through the trees of the garden

But the day and the hour

Will surely come

To take the highest apple

From the knowledge tree

Who amongst us

Can exist a single day

Beyond our own time and our own limits

Countless and futile

Are times I've climbed

To reach and taste

The forbidden fruit

The winds will blow

And the sun will shine

From generation to generation

Through the trees of the garden

But the day and the hour

Will surely come

To take the highest apple

From the knowledge tree

Bridger Wilderness, Wyoming.

The highest church in the Cotswolds at a 1000 feet above sea level St. John's stands high above the village of Elkstone. A very noteworthy Norman church, originally built c1160 the tower was rebuilt in the C13 and replaced in the C15. A spectacular billeted corbel table survives on the north side elaborately carved with a whole bestiary of mythic beasts. The south porch is C14 and protects a rare tympanum depicting Christ in Majesty surrounded by beakhead carvings. The Perpendicular tower is embellished with gargoyles and two figures playing musical instruments. The sanctuary has a quadripartite Norman vault which meet in a boss formed of four masks. The west arch of the sanctuary has dragon's-head stops. Octagonal C15 font and early C17 pulpit. East window has stained glass Madonna by Henry Payne 1929, chancel south and the west window by W.T. Carter Shapland 1959, nave south east window by Heaton, Butler and Baynes, 1895. Two coffin lids under the tower one with a C13 wheel cross the other may be Saxon. The church is famous for its columbarium or dovecote reached by a steep spiral staircase from the sanctuary, South-east of the church is a priest's house c1500.
