Newness and Innovation: A Sense of Modernity
In the 1920s and 30s, young men and women who followed Westernized fashions and lifestyles (referred to at the time as "modern boys and girls") would have seen Geometric Abstraction in film newsletters when visiting theaters in Gyeongseong 京城. Intellectual readers of current affairs magazines such as Che Il Sun (Front Lines) and Siningan (New Human) also often encountered geometrical designs on the covers. A poet, Yi Sang published a poem entitled "The Infinite Hexagon in Architecture AU MAGASIN DE NOUVEAUTES." In it, he described the geometric appearances of the interior and exterior of the Mitsukoshi Department Store with verses like "A square of the interior of a square of the interior of a square of the interior of a square of the interior of a square." In the late 1930s, Kim Whanki and Yoo Youngkuk were experimenting with Geometric Abstraction as an avant-garde art form in Tokyo and Gyeongseong.
The 1920s and 30s was an era during which Geometric Abstraction was introduced to Gyeongseong from the West through direct and indirect channels, and their influence was spreading into the fields of art, design, and even literature. Some creators of the time recognized Geometric Abstraction as a source of newness and innovation. It was also a period in which Geometric Abstract art began to be perceived as a hierarchical boundary between the fine arts and design. Gyeongseong was the birthplace of Geometric Abstract art in Korea in the modern era, and intense debates over it took place there.
Project: Final Major Project ‘Hierarchy is King’ – For this project we were given the choice to pick our own theme which needed to relate back to the rationale of the project. I chose to showcase the ‘Hierarchy’ of the traditional clothing worn by the indigenous 'Igorot' people of the Philippines. I chose this theme because I wanted this project to have a personal and cultural aspect to it, being an 'Igorot' myself. Researching and extracting newfound information for this project was something I found particularly exciting and liberating. I count this as one of my most personal project as it visually communicates who I am as an individual and shows what I find the most interesting and important to have as a developing designer. Which is proudly showcasing ones identity, background and culture creatively through fashion. Shown here is a spread of my sketchbook records showing the starting points of research and early sample experimentations.
