20 - Nov - 2012:
I got this in the post today.
I recently bought a Cree torch which is extremely bright, so I thought I'd get one for cycling.
This one is like a helicopter search light and lights up the road for miles.
Be prepared for emergencies with survival gear like this simple 120 lumen LED headlamp. This a picture from our field test of it in a windowless basement area.
2009 model,i got it really cheap and found killer deals on the batteries and its lighter and has a smaller battery pack!
This is the headlamp project. Currently the LEDs are mounted on a temporary (and I have discovered, inadequate, when there is no airflow) heatsink. Control and driver boards are located in a temporary tupperware enclosure. Eventually the plan is to build a more durable, waterproof enclosure for circuit boards, batteries, and LEDs, and add optics to some of the LEDs.
The LEDs are Cree XLamp XR-E LEDs, which are well-known for their blinding capabilities while consuming only 2 - 3 watts each.
This configuration was successfully field tested a week ago at Southern's All-night Adventure Race, which involved elements of caving, rock climbing, and exploration of Southern's Biology Trail. Everyone commented on how bright the lights were... They performed far better at lighting everything up within 50 - 100 feet compared to all other headlamps seen in use. The black knob was used with some (currently simple) firmware to adjust the brightness of the LEDs. Eventually the plan is to have each LED individually adjustable and programmable - a most useful feature if I decide to add various colors and/or optics instead of the all-white ones currently in use.
Some images of an old and abandoned truck sitting by a shed at Riddells Creek airfield, Victoria. It was ripe for taking HDR images with all the rust, paint and lichen.
