HDR shot of the Sunny Isles pier. Probably my best shot of that day.

My first HDR shots

The Series III had the same body and engine options as the preceding IIa, including station wagons and the 1 Ton versions. Little changed cosmetically from the IIA to the Series III. The Series III is the most common Series vehicle, with 440,000 of the type built from 1971 to 1985. The headlights were moved to the wings on late production IIA models from 1968/9 onward (ostensibly to comply with Australian, American and Dutch lighting regulations) and remained in this position for the Series III. The traditional metal grille, featured on the Series I, II and IIA, was replaced with a plastic one for the Series III model. The 2.25 litre engine had its compression raised from 7:1 to 8:1, increasing the power slightly (the high compression engine had been an optional fit on the IIa model for several years). During the Series III production run from 1971 until 1985, the 1,000,000th Land Rover rolled off the production line in 1976. The Series III saw many changes in the later part of its life as Land Rover updated the design to meet increased competition. This was the first model to feature synchromesh on all four gears, although some late H-suffix SIIA models (mainly the more expensive Station Wagons) had used the all-synchro box. In keeping with early 1970s trends in automotive interior design, both in safety and use of more advanced materials, the simple metal dashboard of earlier models was redesigned to accept a new moulded plastic dash. The instrument cluster, which was previously centrally located, was moved to the driver's side. Long-wheelbase Series III vehicles had the Salisbury rear axle as standard, although some late SIIA 109-inch vehicles had them too.

In 1980 the 4-cylinder 2.25 litre engines (both petrol and diesel) were updated with five-bearing crankshafts to increase strength in heavy duty work. At the same time the transmission, axles and wheel hubs were re-designed for increased strength. This was the culmination of a series of updates to the transmission that had been made since the 1960s to combat the all-too-common problem of the rear axle half-shafts breaking in heavy usage. This problem was partly due to the design of the shafts themselves. Due to the fully-floating design of the rear wheel hubs, the half shafts can be removed very quickly without even having to jack the vehicle off the ground. The tendency for commercial operators to overload their vehicles exacerbated this flaw which blighted the Series Land Rovers in many of their export markets and established a reputation that continues in many markets to the present day. This is despite the 1982 re-design (mainly the changing of the driveshafts from 10 driving-splines to 24 to reduce stress) all but solved the problem.

Also, new trim options were introduced to make the interior more comfortable if the buyer so wished (many farmers and commercial users preferred the original, non-trimmed interior).

These changes culminated in April 1982 with the introduction of the "County" spec Station Wagon Land Rovers, available in both 88-inch (2,200 mm) and 109-inch (2,800 mm) types. These had all-new cloth seats from the Leyland T-45 Lorry, soundproofing kits, tinted glass and other "soft" options designed to appeal to the leisure owner/user.

Of more interest was the introduction of the High Capacity Pick Up to the 109-inch (2,800 mm) chassis. This was a pick-up truck load bay that offered 25% more cubic capacity than the standard pick-up style. The HCPU came with heavy-duty suspension and was popular with public utility companies and building contractors.

Single RAW HDR shot of the Flatiron Building in Manhattan, New York.

I remember thinking: "Today, I'll mainly be shopping and walking about so I'll just bring the 50mm." Well, the shopping and walking about brought me to the Flatiron Building... I so could have used the 14-24mm then! :P

5XP HDR shot of Shinkyo Bridge "The Sacred Bridge" in Nikko, Japan.

The Shinkyo Bridge stands at the entrance to Nikko's shrines and temples. It is ranked as one of Japan's three finest bridges together with Iwakuni's Kintaikyo and Saruhashi in Yamanashi Prefecture

HDR shot of the Perth Convention Centre. Really happy with the colours in this shot.

A HDR shot taken at Hyde Park. This is a 9 shot HDR using Photomatix to merge them together. It is hard to describe the colours there at the moment. Normal single shot photo's struggle with the vibrance and the mood. I am hoping this HDR attempt gets closer to the real colours and feel of the park in Autumn.

5XP HDR shot of the Petronas Twin Towers during a rainy night in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Was hesitant to post this at first given the reflected water spots but I guess it adds a slightly different element to an otherwise regular Petronas Tower vertical composition - thoughts?

An HDR shot of windmills at the Farr Wind Farm. Thanks to Craig Robertson for inspiring me to trudge up there through the peat bogs....thanks Craig!

Anyway, as he said, like them or loath them, they are impressive machines...they make an impression and that is what this picture is trying to convey

A HDR shot of 6 frames, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, (and another somewhere between.) It was an even 7 framed shot, but the tripod moved for the last.

This was taken from a cliff by a path which leads around the Little Fistral Coast in Newquay, Cornwall, England. I used a polariser filter, and would have used ND filter if I had it at the time. Taken last month.

A great night to take photos with some nice ambient light and humidity in the air as showers rolled through due to thunderstorms. The water from the Reflecting Pool wasn't perfectly still for a mirror image but it did still create a cool effect!

HDR shot of the New York City skyline from Weehawken, NJ. You are facing east here and thunderstorm was moving in from West. Shoots of light filtered through the incoming clouds to make the pattern in the sky. Unbelievable.

Another shot taken on Saturday night, showing the spectacular sunset we had, this is another shot of Victoria Tower at Castle Hill near Huddersfield in West Yorkshire UK.

It is a 3xp handheld HDR shot each exposure is 1 stop above and below normal.

The tower was built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Jubilee, it is also sometimes refered to as Jubilee Tower.

My second HDR shot: Kelly's Landing, in Manotick, Ontario.

Still learning the HDR thing. Not as good as most people's yet. Fun though!

This is the view from Kelly's Landing, a real boat landing just behind Kelly's Landing Restaurant, which is one of the finest restaurants in the Ottawa Valley (including inside Ottawa itself)... and being this is a diplomatic town with lots of poeple who pass through or travel from, and influxes of French (Montreal) and Vietnamese (Boat refugees from the 70s) plus a lot of native Irish, Scots, Italian, that's really saying something as Ottawa is blessed with some of the best restaurants on the planet (for some reason Ottawa has also been on a New Orleans and Mexican restaurant kick for about 10 years now, although Thai has become really popular recently... and "Fusion Japanese-Canadian").

Kelly's Landing restaurant is owned and run by Tony (who is Italian, not Irish, though he's married to an Irish Lass). For those that live in Ottawa, Tony used to the chef at Big Daddy's and the Lonestar Restaurant (New Orleans and Mexican restaurants. Quel suprise!) which are owned by the same owner. He left there to start his own restaurant a few years ago. If you're a Big Daddy's fan (and I was) he also took the menu with him, so if you remember about 5 years when the Big Daddy's restaurants changed their menu, Tony is the reason. They were copyright by him as they were family recipees. Among the many items that Tony left with are his famous Bananas Foster, and the best pasta dish on the planet, the Bourbon Street Fettucini. If you go to Kelly's and are very nice, Tony is more than happy to make them on special order. Otherwise you can choose from the regular and special menus which include things like cedar plank salmon, cajun catfish and chicken boxtie (sorry Tony, it's really a crepe but only the real Irish would want boxties anyway).

Kelly's Landing is popular not only for its amazing food, but also for its deck which stetches out nearly to the water front. The deck is just visible in this photo to the right behind the gas sign (it's a boat landing so they also sell gas :-). In the summer it makes one of the most beautiful places in all of Canada to sit and eat. I just wish I could have done the view justice in this shot!

This one is dedicated to Dave (The Haligonian) who introduced me to HDR and who badgered me yesterday and all evening today to get off my butt and post something.

Thanks Dave!
