A Royal Air Force Merlin helicopter is pictured on operations over Afghanistan.
The Merlin (Bird of prey) HC3 and HC3a are operated by No 28 (AC) Squadron and 78 Squadron at RAF Benson. 78 Squadron was re-formed on 3 Dec 07 to allow for the increase in aircraft after the purchase of the 6 Danish Merlin HC3a earlier in 2007.
The Merlin is the first of a new generation of advanced, medium support helicopters for the RAF. It is an all weather, day and night, multi-role helicopter used in both tactical and strategic operational roles.
The aircraft carries an impressive defensive-aids suite, which includes a Radar and Laser Warning Receiver, Missile Approach Warners and Directional Infrared Countermeasures equipment, all integrated with an automatic chaff and flare dispensing system. This is one of the most comprehensive defensive aids suites fitted to any helicopter in the world.

A Mk 3 Chinook from RAF Odiham practices landing in a confined area.
The Chinook is a very capable and versatile support helicopter that can be operated in many diverse environments ranging from cold weather ‘arctic’ conditions to desert warfare operations.
The RAF operates the largest fleet of Chinook Support Helicopters after the US Army, with a total of 34 HC2s, 6 HC2As and 8 HC3s (the HC3 has yet to enter operational service). The Chinook Wing, which forms the heavy-lift element of the Joint Helicopter Command (JHC), is based at RAF Odiham in Hampshire. Odiham supports three operational squadrons, No 7 Squadron, No 18 Squadron and No 27 Squadron, and the Operational Conversion Flight.

This is one of the most comprehensive defensive aids suites fitted to any helicopter in the world. To ensure accurate navigation anywhere on the globe, the aircraft’s management computers take data from its laser-gyro, inertial-navigation platform and its doppler system and from air data sources, and combine the information with precise position data received from Global Positioning System satellites.
Navigation at night is enhanced by the crew’s use of display night-vision goggles and by the aircraft’s multi-function turret, which can be fitted with forward- looking infrared radar. To increase the aircraft’s range, the Merlin can be equipped with extended range fuel tanks and is capable of air-to-air refuelling, although this option is not currently used by the RAF. It is also fitted with an active vibration-damping system, which reduces the level of noise and vibration inside the cabin to a level no greater than that of a turboprop aircraft. As a result, crew fatigue is much reduced during long transits and airframe life is increased.

ZH900 is now at HC5 standard and is one of eight former HC3s that were intended for UK special forces operations when first procured. The attempt to do SF Chinooks on the 'cheap' to a UK only spec predictably ended as a disaster with the variant deemed unairworthy and stored unusable for many years. It was only after another fortune was spent converting them back to the UK standard specification that they entered service many years later.

This RAF Merlin HC3A was photographed 12 months ago today at the world-famous Eton College, where it was providing CCF and ATC cadets with an air experience opportunity.
At that stage the Merlin HC3/3As were operated by the RAF's Nos. 28 and 78 Squadrons from RAF Benson, Oxfordshire, but they have since passed into the hands of the Royal Navy's Commando Helicopter Force at RNAS Yeovilton, Somerset.
Royal Navy's Agusta Westland Merlin HC3 helicopters (ZJ129 / N) helicopter from 846 Naval Air Squadron based at RN's Air Station Yeovilton, Somerset, at the RAF Gibraltar's South Dispersal Ramp following their arrival Gibraltar's International Airport. The two helicopters will be conducting a week's flight training operations from Gibraltar involving student pilots.
Royal Navy Merlin HC.3a ZK001 at RIAT 2018, RAF Fairford. The HC.3 variant was formerly operated by the RAF but all aircraft were transferred to the Royal Navy in 2015 to replace the RN Sea King HC.4 troop carrier fleet which was going out of service. The Merlin Mk3 differs from the Mk1 and Mk2 ASW variants by featuring a rear ramp for troop and cargo off-loading.
As part of the transfer, the HC.3 variant has received a naval upgrade package including folding rotors and tail and other modifications.

I usually take only existing-light photographs, but this one was assisted by the night-vision binocular mounted on my helmet.

Having delivered the gun, the Merlin is now in transit to pick up some troops, its next task for the day.
Unlike ground vehicles in Afghanistan which are generally painted in desert camouflage, the RAF has left its helicopters in their original, temperate-zone colour schemes: in the case of Merlins, this is uniform dark green. As military Lego builders know well, the range of parts available in this colour is relatively limited, but it has proved possible to create a Merlin from them. However, in being the first to post an all-dark-green military chopper, I was scooped by BrickArmy with his Blackhawk!
