How is this four years ago already?!?
Having worked with 28(AC) Squadron many times while the unit operated the Merlin HC3/3A, it was nice to finally catch one of the Chinook HC4s carrying 28 Sqn markings.
Following the handover of the Merlins to the Royal Navy's Commando Helicopter Force in July, it became the 28 Sqn OCU and is now responsible for the training of both ab initio and re-tread Chinook and Puma crews.
The Squadron is still based at RAF Benson, Oxfordshire.

A Royal Air Force Chinook helicopter flys over the mountainous terrain of the North Africa in preparation for deployment to Afghanistan.
Working alongside Army Air Corps Lynx helicopters and an array of ground support personnel, the Chinook pilots and aircrew practiced dust landings and underslung load carrying among other vital tasks in an exercise called Jebel Sahara.

Pictured is a Chinook HC Mk3 from RAF Odiham flying in the Helicopter lanes over London.
The Chinook is an able and versatile support helicopter that can be armed with crew served weapons to provide self-defence, and can be operated from land or ship in such diverse environments as the Arctic, jungle and desert.
Chinook aircraft are used for trooping, resupply, and battlefield Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC), and for carrying internal and/or underslung loads. They can carry up to 55 troops (more, usually 24 to 40) and/or up to 10 tonnes of freight. A secondary role includes Search and Rescue (SAR).
