After returning to base for a brief refuelling stop, the helicopter is scrambled again with a medical team to evacuate an Afghan serviceman wounded on an operation with British troops.

 

The model is 1:35 scale, making the fuselage about 60cm long. The three-engined Merlin is a BIG helicopter, approaching the Chinook in size.

These were the final training exercises (FTX) in preparation for Op Herrick deployments to Afghanistan. They certainly provided us enthusiast with some fantastic photographic opportunities.

A Mk 3 Chinook in flight at RAF Odiham in Hampshire.

 

Chinooks are used primarily for trooping and for load carrying (both internal and underslung) and can carry up to 54 troops or 10 tonnes of freight.

 

Royal Air Force Odiham is situated in North Hampshire, 46 Miles south west of London . The nearest large town is Basingstoke, 7 miles to the West. The working population of the Station is about 2,000, of which around 100 are civilians.

Eight years ago today, this Royal Air Force Merlin HC3A is pictured arriving at Dawlish for the 2010 Dawlish Air Show.

 

Fast-forward to 2018 and the RAF no longer operates the Merlin and Dawlish no longer hosts an airshow.... :-(

I can't believe it's 10 years already since this awesome day on Salisbury Plain.

 

Many of you will probably remember the story of the RAF's Chinook HC3s. After their delivery, the MoD decided that it could not sign them off as being safe, having paid a third-party provider to modify the flight control software. It did not say that they were unsafe, just that they could not prove that they were.

 

After years of sitting around doing nothing, they were essentially down-graded to HC2 airframes. This is one of the subsequent test flights, operated by the people of QinetiQ.

 

Clearly, not everything about this airframe was HC2, though, as the engorged fuel tanks on the sides of the fuselage prove.

 

At the time, this catch was something of a coup, and many of my pictures from it were used in the subsequent Release-To-Service media event at RAF Odiham in January 2010.

Royal Navy's Agusta Westland Merlin HC3 helicopter (ZJ129 / N) helicopter, 846 Naval Air Squadron based at RN's Air Station Yeovilton, Somerset landing on the piano keys at Gibraltar's International Airport. This helicopter is still in RAF colours despite the hand over all of its Merlins to the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm.

A Chinook HC3 helcopter from RAF Odiham lands at RAF Shawbury for a re fuel on route to its home station.

 

The Chinook is an able and versatile support helicopter that can be armed with crew served weapons to provide self-defence, and can be operated from land or ship in such diverse environments as the Arctic, jungle and desert.

 

Chinook aircraft are used for trooping, resupply, and battlefield Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC), and for carrying internal and/or underslung loads. They can carry up to 55 troops (more, usually 24 to 40) and/or up to 10 tonnes of freight. A secondary role includes Search and Rescue (SAR).

Pictured are a special formation of Chinooks from 18,27 & 28 Sqn, part of their 100th anniversary celebrations.

 

On Wednesday 14 September a very special formation left RAF Odiham bound for the south coast of England but tactical camouflage was not on the agenda! In the past 18 months three Chinook aircraft have been painted to celebrate the 100th anniversaries of 18(B) and 27 Squadron from RAF Odiham and 28 Squadron from RAF Benson.

 

With the first of the helicopters expected to be returned to standard operational markings in the near future this opportunity was integrated in to a formation training sortie which tested the crews’ ability to plan and execute some very unique tasks. With it being so complex the mission was, unusually, briefed the day prior to launch and each crew walked through the various maneouvres in the hangar, in what is colloquially known as a ‘rock drill.’ At the hour they walked for their aircraft each member had a firm grasp of the planned movements which enabled them to focus on maintaining strict safety margins.

 

The day itself was only the end of a long road though, with preparation having begun over 6 months ago. Operational restraints cancelled the first planned date in June and the only other window where all three aircraft were available concurrently was identified as being this week.

 

RAF Odiham’s dedicated and professional engineering teams were therefore faced with generating three very specific airframes to complete this sortie whilst concurrently deploying multiple others to support exercises in Sweden and onboard HMS Ocean and providing manpower to flying detachments in the United States and elsewhere. They succeeded and the results of their efforts are clearly seen.The Serco team who painted the Chinooks at Odiham, each in the space of two intense weeks, were invited to see the three lined up on the dispersal together for what may be the first and only time – a moment they had waited a long time to see.

 

As for the stunning imagery seen here, that could certainly not have been captured without the generous contribution of 657 Sqn Army Air Corps, also based at RAF Odiham, who integrated a Lynx aircraft with the formation to act as a camera platform. This again provided a valuable training opportunity for dissimilar types to operate together, all the while having to maintain awareness of the other’s capabilities and limitations.

The Merlin has just dropped a foot patrol sent in to raid compounds in search of Taliban insurgents, and is now taking off, ready to exit the landing zone fast and low, its crew keeping a sharp lookout and its machine guns manned.

RAF Chinook HC3 at RAF Northolt in 2010. The RAF purchased eight HC3s for use with special operation forces and were equivalent to a low cost version of the MH-47E. ZH900, like the other HC3 were subsequently upgraded to HC5.
