Haystack Rock, at Cannon Beach, Oregon, is a volcanic monolith measuring approximately 22 stories tall.

There were lots of photographers out with their telephoto lenses, as well as bird watchers with their binoculars. Around the front side of Haystack Rock, Carmen made friends with a naturalist who had two monoculars set up for viewing the birds. She found us a colony of common murres on Haystack Rock to look at through the monocular. Then, she found a lone puffin! Apparently puffins are rather elusive, burrowing 3-7 feet deep, so we were lucky to see one. My camera lens didn’t have the reach to capture the birds in any kind of detail, but I took a couple short videos with my phone through the monoculars.
the details show best on black. I rarely see kites being flown on this beach. and suddenly the birds flew right along w/the kite....
