....towering 235 feet above the beach, surrounded by sea and sand as the tide changes, Haystack Rock is one of the largest "sea stacks" on America's Pacific coast. It is one of several large rocks, each separated from the others by sandy beaches, rocky headlands, moving air and water. Although is seems isolated from neighboring formations, Haystack Rock is joined to all the others at their shared volcanic foundations beneath the shifting sands. Five different species of birds can be found nesting on the rocks.
I didn't get very close to any puffins on my latest trip to Cannon Beach / Haystack Rock, but hey, it's a picture of a tufted puffin!
I'm no expert, but some tips from my experience trying to shoot puffins at Haystack Rock:
1-Go sometime during the summer, otherwise they're out at sea
2-Go at really low tide (around -1.0 feet is pretty good) so you can get close to the rock, where they're either sitting high up or flying by
3-Early morning seems to be best, but the tide doesn't care about bird photography, so it might not be an option
4-Get ready to see 200 common murres for every puffin, which look pretty similar in flight. It's sort of a fun game picking the puffins out of the cloud of murres.
--Plus, Murres are cool looking birds and there are so many that you can get loads of practice shooting dark-colored flying birds.
Murphy's Haystacks
Near Streaky Bay, South Australia
These granite inselberg rock formations dot the landscape on the northern parts of Eyre Peninsula. Murphy's haystacks is an odd collection of them 40km southeast of Streaky Bay. The night was clear but moonrise occurred 1 hour after last light which gave some limited time for milky way images. Unfortunately the milky way was very high over head which made it difficult to include it with the rocks in their entirety. This is one of the images taken from that night.

One of the more famous peaks in the lake-district due to the late Alfred Wainwright, who's books became world-wide best sellers.
The Nounan Valley is one of the coldest areas around here. Maybe that helps keep the population small, but there are a few tough ranchers who raise cattle and lots of hay to get them through the winter.

Haystack Rock at Canon Beach, Oregon. Absolutely gorgeous day on the Oregon coast, albeit a little chilly. No wind, no clouds. In other words: boring!

I kept waiting all week for a decent sunset with some colors and clouds that I could frame up. Tonight was the night and I scurried around frantically trying to soak up as much of it as possible.
