As one of the founding fathers of the French Impressionism, Oscar-Claude Monet (1840–1926) broke free from the convention of copying from the old masters. Monet's impressionistic artworks depicted his direct observation of nature and his emphasis on the shifting of lights according to different times and seasons.

Early morning/late night adventure with Emre to Canon Beach. Not sure what type of boat was providing the light in the distance, however it created a unique opportunity to silhouette Haystack rock.

BACKSTORY

Took a trip to the coast with 36Fiver but managed to get a couple of shots out of the trip since this one was taken just after midnight. My first attempt at astrophotography and I learned a ton about what it takes to do it well --- I hope to expand on this form of photography and improve my images and abilities. This image does much better viewed at full size on a large monitor --- you can just see the leading edge of the Milky Way on the lower left.

During the hottest two days of our recent heatwave I took the dog out around the village at 6.00 a.m. to avoid the heat.

This photo was taken the day before this rumored haunted and infamous Victorian home burned to the ground. I have received emails and calls over the Haystack Landing from around the world especially in October near Halloween. My photo even made it into the prestigious Victorian Homes magazine. I have been contacted by Fox, NBC, and Discovery about shows on the haunted location as well CBS used the photo for a Rock Band CD cover. This has been amazing as after it burned my blog posts and photos were so well known that the fire department emailed me as did the owners of the property as well as a few weird people. Although I am, not convinced of the existence of ghosts, the hair on your neck stood up when near this place and it just felt eerie not just because of its looks or long history but it had a wierd feeling when you were near the place.

Walking along Cannon Beach, we found abandoned beginnings of a sand castle. The similarities to the beach's famous sea stack, Haystack Rock, were uncanny.

This is rain - not fog!

I had the idea to get a bus to Buttermere and maybe walk up to Bleaberry Tarn. I ended up walking from the bus stop to Croft House Farm Cafe.

I'd been walking around Whinlatter Forest all morning so I'd got my miles in and seen a Red Squirrel.

Haystack Rock is on Cannon Beach, Oregon. This amazing rock stands 235 ft. tall.

Just a shot of Haystack Rock in HDR NOT using Photomatix or any other HDR program...just adjustments in photoshop.

We managed to get up very early and take pictures from Ecola State Park, towards the haystacks at Cannon Beach. It was super cold! Everything was covered in frost and ice, and there was a mean, biting wind coming off of the ocean. I thought I would never be warm again. But it was worth it. ;-)

This is a shot of Haystack Rock at Pacific City when I was there... I used a plugin from Mehdi to do the mirror effect... It can be done in PS without the plugin but it's much easier to do it otherwise.. IMHO!!!

If you only ever read one page of Wainwright, read his description of Haystacks in Book 7, The Western Fells. He loved this spot. It is rough and covered with rocky outcrops and little dew ponds (tarns) like the one in the picture. Crummock Water is visible above the tarn. The bulk to the left is High Crag, which is hiding the Buttermere Ridge. Grasmoor is to the right. Buttermere Village is in the valley beyond the two blue anoraks. I think you can see Scotland on this picture? The best way to climb Haystacks is from Buttermere via Scarth Gap. A good place to visit before you climb is the little church in Buttermere Village. One of the windows is dedicated to Mr. Wainwright, and through it you can see this fell, his favourite.

Climbed on Wednesday May 11th 2011.

"The Haystack has a few rock routes on its southern and eastern flanks, and on the north side, there is a route to the top that can be scrambled. The summit scramble is not for everyone. This can’t be stressed enough. A fall off of the Haystack is going to be an uncontrolled fall."

More of the Oregon Coast from my earlier trip. This is Haystack Rock, just south of Tillimook, presumably named because it's a rock that's been made of Hay!
