A dragonfly hatching.

When I went out there, I noticed that two of the eggs had little cracks in them. I don't know if the babies are slowly cracking it from the inside with their beaks or if they are so big inside that the pressure is making the eggs crack. The cracks were there all day long - no change, but something HAS to be happening soon! I'm so excited.

Took me a while to figure out what was happening here, I think the orange ones are freshly hatched and have yet to harden the shells.

A shot from 'Dr. Longitude's Marvellous Imaginary Menagerie' by award-winning theatre group, Les Enfants Terribles, at last year's Edinburgh Fringe.

This is an extremely silly and highly enjoyable show...for children...of all ages. :-)

We arrived just as this chick was hatching. (In the Museum of Science and Industry)

Watch the egg hatch!! ...well not really it hatched over the course of an hour or two. If I had a time-lapse camera I'd have gotten the whole thing.. but I don't.

Women who have failed IVF treatment previously can take advantage of the hatching technique. With hatching, they can improve their chances of pregnancy in the first attempt. Some women have thicker egg shells that take more than longer time in breaching or it would be better to say that those eggs can’t breach easily. Assisted hatching can help those women by breaching their eggs. They won’t have to wait for the eggs to breach naturally and become pregnant.

Marigold seeds sprouting on the windowsill.

Kept alone in the dark damp kitchen, they sat alone and shivered.

They were the beans.

A week before, they had been resting quietly in a bag of other beans, but one dark cloudy and stormy day, they were plucked from their safe little hiding place, and buried in the soil which rested in an egg shell.

A week later, they showed signs of thinking it was time to peak at the world through the leaves of green, and to bring with them the promise of spring, and a good summer.

Now for those who are wondering what they heck this is all about, this is one of the experiments in germinating plants this spring. I saw the photo of this and decided it was worth trying. I made sure to save enough egg shells and filled them with soil from our garden, and planted the seeds. I have to admit, like a kid, every day I was in checking them to see if they had sprouted. Finally after 7-8 days, they did indeed sprout. The ones as yet unsprouted, are the nasturtium seeds, but they were only just started a few days back.

The eggs when the roots grow too big will crack and provide nutrients for the growing plants, and in the mena time they are handy little grow boxes.

Best of all, they can be stacked nicely on top of other plants still wating to "hatch" until they are ready to be planted.

Another from the monastery, and the first in my mini-series of 'things I saw in the hedge'. Looks like this one hatched OK.

2ème version, la première version postée hier ne me plaisait pas. Je l'ai donc retravaillée pour éclaircir l'ensemble ainsi que le premier plan un peu plus et modifier légèrement la balance des blancs.

2nd version. I didn't like the first version posted yesterday. I did some more work on post-processing to lighten the picture, especially the foreground and to modify the white balance.

Lady Bird Beetle Larvae Hatching from Eggs (2:1) - On a Southern Yellow Pine Needle with whatever tree/bush has bright red leaves in the spring being seen in the lower part with a magnolia in the far background. Here we have one egg that may not hatch, one brand new hatchling with a green-yellow head, someone whose been out several hours with the black head...puffy white emptied egg cases, a withered egg ( far right ) that never had a chance, and an egg next to it with the grey stripes that is about to start hatching next.

Dyme mamillata hatching. I wish I had a better camera so I could capture more detail. I really like the pattern on the egg :)
