We have just returned from a week in Hampshire looking after our granddaughter so getting out and about with the camera was not an option

However one morning I spotted this hare moving about after heavy rain

So from the first floor window of the cottage set in a hillside I had a few clicks to staunch the withdrawal symptoms of not using my clicking finger. As you can tell the angle was far from pleasing.

I hope you can get the feel of what I saw that wet Hampshire morning.

Love was in the air as this chap set about his task of finding his Jill.

Other than the hare I had no other opportunities for the camera.

Another of the same Brown Hare from yesterday morning when the light was glorious and the dew covered grass glistened...

Sometimes they come really close ..

Hares are everywhere on Islay.

Many thanks for the faves and comments, they are all very much appreciated

Another year, another hare season. Quite addicted to these charismatic mammals and had a fantastic hour with this individual first thing this morning.

Soaking wet from the early morning dew (myself and the hare) While I was lying very still this hare came over to eye me up.

It was a special moment.

Thanks for having a look at my photos. Comments very welcome and much appreciated.

It was great to see this hare so relaxed today in the spring sunshine. It tolerated my brother and I snapping away for ages before it got fed up and ran away. What a treat!

An image made before all hell broke loose!

The Brown Hare doe in the centre had been hunkered down on the disused airfield, but nevertheless had attracted the attentions of two bucks. Here, they're shown either side of her feeding. Both could detect by her scent, that she would be ready to mate soon, so were biding their time.

Moments later, the buck on the left made the mistake of forcing himself onto the doe, which she didn't like one bit. Rearing up she boxed him with her front paws, then chased both of them further away. Exciting to watch at close hand, concealed in a bag hide ... but sadly, over in a flash.

‘WHOLE LOT OF SHAKIN’ GOING ON.’

Early morning on a Suffolk coastal marsh and the grass still dew-laden. I captured this Hare part way through one of it's grooming routines. It had raised itself up onto it's hind legs and was shaking it's fur vigorously to rid it of water droplets. They spend a lot of time doing this and especially don't seem to like having wet feet!

If viewed large, you will see some intentional motion blur around the centre of the Hare's body. This was to highlight it’s shaking action and I devoted time making this type of image whenever an opportunity arose during the day.

We stared at each other for a minute.

Then he (or she) decided that a retreat was by far the smartest action....

Whilst on our recent hols to Devon I was lucky enough to see some beautiful Hares. They are not easy to get close to or photograph. You must ensure that where you position yourself doesnt allow your scent to be carried to them or once detected they will make a hast exit and not appear for another day or so hence the title.

I really want to get better shots of Hares now so I will go and try and find some sites locally.

Beautiful creatures I feel very lucky to have seen them.

‘CLOUDY, AN OLD FRIEND.’

I watched this female Hare on a Suffolk grazing marsh for three consecutive years. She had a distinctive eye defect in the front corner of her left eye which made her easy to recognise. Whether this was congenital or the result of some natural accident will never be known. I suppose there is a strong possibility it could have been caused in a bout of ‘boxing’ with an ardent male who had mating on his mind when she didn’t!

If viewed large, you can see the cloudy, milky white defect very clearly. It didn’t appear to affect her sight, which was a blessing.

Wash and brush up. Whilst waiting to photograph a little owl in a hide this fella kept coming closer to the hide. Stopped and had a sleep then when he woke up groomed his face with his paws.

Fabulous encounter with a wonderful, totally relaxed mountain hare in the Scottish Highlands, July 2019.

Not been able to comment on anyones photos lately….four days in the highlands which included a day photographing these beauties. Anyone wishing to do the same you would be hard pushed to find a better guide than Marcus Conway who's patience, fieldcraft and knowledge of his subjects enabled us to get close views with the Hare being totally at ease with our presence

After a boxing match these two had a go at leapfrog. Great to watch these animals.

Dipping back into the images from the late summer trip to London for the A Day In Capital City album. This lady was wandering around in the courtyard of the Royal Academy of Arts and the giant hare sculptures - another scene I've used in an earlier image. : )

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

So having visited RSPB Havergate Island a while ago I've started up a project to try and photograph them on farmland near to where I live. Obviously they're a lot more skittish and getting close is proving difficult, but I'm getting there.

I spent a good three hours this morning (Good Friday) crawling around this field and eventually managed to get within distance of three Hares. Two of them decided to have a little tiff while the third was to the left out of frame.

For an old lady of my age this was a situation I would never have dreamed of, a hare performing just for me.

It had been disturbed by farm machinery at the other end of the field and so had made its way to where I was sitting in the car with camera on my lap.

Camera was soon out of the window and I clicked away for the brief period that it posed.

My heart was racing but my hand was reasonably steady.

What a fabulous memory for my husband and I.

Mountain Hare digging for food in the evening sun, Scottish Highlands

This is the sort of image that I find so appealing. I'm out in the Somerset countryside watching the harvest and looking out for wildlife. The Harvest is in full swing and the Hares have to be careful as their home gets smaller and smaller. This field was just full of Hares, all over the place along with a few buzzards. Please note: No hares were hurt by the harvest machinery.

Snowshoe Hare - Every year these guys come out of the woods late afternoon to steal bird seeds at a public feeder. Some years we can count 9 to 10. I have only seen 4 this year. I always wanted to capture the light behind those wonderful ears but it never happened...Even though the sun angle was not low enough for what I wanted to achieve here, I am very happy anyway as I have tried to get this composition and the backlit to show the ears and fur for several years... but there is a lot that needs to happen to get that shot: 1) a sunny day 2) subject position and/or sun position 3) time of the day and finally time of the year for the sun angle... So I am satisfied right now but will still try again some sunny day.
