There was more amazing art-think/talk/do with our first-year Wisconsin School of Business students - this time with phenomenal artist/activist Alaura Megan Seidl of The ArtWrite Collective.
“What issues are important to you? What are your values? How can you use words and images to move us all in the direction of the world you dream of? And if you're business-minded, can social entrepreneurship be part of the picture?”
So much food for thought! Alaura fed us full of so many BIG ideas to ponder...we'll continue to imagine and reach for those alternative worlds.

She's learning division and having some difficulty grasping the concept. So, to help visualize it, I had her take popsicle sticks and divide them into groups.
For example, 12 divided by 4.
"How can you equally divide 12 into 4 groups?" By laying the sticks out, she comes up with her answer and can see the answer...helping her to remember 12 divided by 4 equals 3.
The books she is using is from Rod and Staff for third graders. She's used the Rod and Staff math curriculum for 1st and 2nd grade as well and enjoys it.

Sophia and Olivia wanted to go to the top of Split Rock Lighthouse twice. This is the view up. Apparently the light weighs 4 tons and balances on a base of mercury.
After studying and reading stories about lighthouses, this particular lighthouse, and Minnesota geography...it was very interesting for the girls to see the lighthouse first-hand. Really brought what they are learning to life.

These were made as part of a unit study using Josephina (one of the American Girl dolls). The study included learning about New Mexico, Mexico, hispanic culture and arts, Native Americans who live in the SW U.S., Native American art and culture, cooking, music, deserts (animals, cacti), goats, clothing, and history. This was a very hands-on and fun unit.
The empanadas are filled with a spoon of applesauce. They turned out really well, and the girls enjoyed making and eating them.
Have absolutely no idea what kind of fish this is, but Sophia thought it was interesting. This was at the aquarium in Duluth.
***Okay...after looking at the Great Lakes Aquarium website, I THINK this is a longnose gar. It is in the St. Louis River which flows into Lake Superior at the Twin Ports of Duluth (MN) and Superior (WI).

A hands-on learning experience at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.
Few patrons are actually allowed to touch objects in the museum. However, some objects can be handled by the public. Hands-on learning is a way for patrons to explore aesthetics, art history, and world history in a different way than by reading or listening.
The museum offers hands-on learning to schools and community organizations.
