Stinging nettle for sale at the Union Square Greenmarket. Vendor just picked a batch of stinging nettle with his bare hands (said the nettles do not bother him).

This bone handled knife was discovered between the joist and gable wall of a stone house just outside of Kendal in Cumbria I was undertaking an architectural survey on. Architectural detailing in the house points to a 16th or 17th century origin, which probably relects the age of this knife. The blade, along with the scale type tang, is one piece of steel, the shape of the tang being taken up by the two scales of the bone handle. Note the five steel rivets used to secure the handle, now corroded like the blade. Between these, and extending towards the bulbous end of the handle, are pairs of decorative pins made from copper alloy. The bolster appears to be made from two separate pieces, presumably riveted together, or more likely forged onto the tang, but corrosion deposits make this difficult to ascertain, Xray being the answer. Of further interest is the shape of the blade, the point being rounded and pointing downwards. This last feature tells me this a domestic knife, not a weapon. The quality of the finish, along with the copper alloy pin decoration, point towards this being a personal item, probably the owner's general eating and carving knife in an age when forks were rarely seen, let alone used.

Further research points to this piece dating to around 1550 to 1625 with the blade possibly being a Dutch import. See UKDFD: 7116 for a similar date, handle and construction type found at Hebdon, Yorkshire, also P. Brown (2001). British Cutlery. An illustrated history of design, evolution and use. This is a nicely made little carpenter's axe made in - would yoiu believe it - China. The bit is nicely shaped and polished although surface rust has made its marks. The handle looks like oka to me and the axe is well balanced. The steel also seems tough, so despite the dubious place of origin it feels and performs like a quality axe.

My golf buggy design consists of two parts - the handle and the base.

Rather than having the two connected (ie. a collapsible buggy), I decided to save room by separating the two.

The pole resides within the golf bag permanently, as though it were just another club.

The FS100 Top Handle mounts directly to the FS100 camera without blocking the opening of the LCD screen. The handle is ideal for low-mode shooting and easy transport of your camera. The base of the handle attaches to the FS100 via two ¼” 20 screws (included) and our coldshoe adapter. The dual mounting points ensure a sturdy connection. The Top Handle mounts to the base via a quick release slide, allowing you to leave the base on the camera and remove the handle with the flip of a lever. The handle and rods assembly is 7” long. Both ends of the handle are female threaded for extensions.

You can also mount your FS100 microphone to the handle using our Tri-Mount. The Tri-Mount has (1) 15mm port that is secured with an Allen screw and (2) parallel 15mm mounting holes with quick release levers. The port attaches to the Top Handle rod, giving you (2) 15mm holes for a variety of mounting options such as mounting your mic, EVF, lights, recorders, etc. The Tri-Mount is not included with the Top Handle but can be added below.

All these handles were custom made to fit the tools. The tang on the draw knife had to be welded before fitting the new handle, which was turned from a broken spade haft. Apart from the mortice chisel that used wood from an old pallet, the rest were fashioned from 'Green' wood found locally near Manchester, England.
