Double Crested Comorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) at Hammonasset State Park

I was out hiking in Hammonasset State Park with two friends today and spotted this heron feeding on the way back to the car. We are not sure what it was eating, but it pulled some shiny wriggling things out from under the ice.

in spite of the onset of the bitter cold we had ourselves a good day. spending the last hours of daylight down at the water we paused to brew up some coffee to help keep us warm.
