Hackney Wick, London E9, is a run-down industrial area on the borders of the London Boroughs of Hackney,Tower Hamlets and Newham; which was once little-known outside the immediate vicinity and rarely visited by outsiders. However it lies just a stone's throw from the Olympic Park and now being revitalised by artists and creative enterprises.
Jahmal Mason-Blair was murdered when he tried to stop a petty dispute over a bicycle between midnight and 1am on May 23, 2009. He was a talented footballer and many tribute items have reflected this - shoes, T-shirts and medallions.
I have been very touched at the way this tribute site has grown every day and the crowd that shows up tirelessly to stand and crouch quietly, some in prayer but always to support each other. These include:
1. Red bus priority lanes.
2. A separate shared ped/bike path.
3. A guided busway tunnel giving a direct link from here to Grenfell St.
Construction should begin in 2017 and will be finished by mid 2019.
