Hackney Marshes is famous for its football pitches. It's said to have over a hundred of them. This picture was taken from beside the River Lea. The rubble from WW2 bombing of the City and East End of London was dumped on the marshes, so nowadays the surface is about eight feet up from the river and the football pitches enjoy excellent drainage. This stretch of the river will cease to be tidal in about a week's time due to works in connection with the 2012 Olympic Games.
