Yes, I know it is upside-down. Why not? it is a butterfly, and can land any way it chooses, and this one was in a barn, on a beam. I could invert the picture, but that would be dishonest, and it is nice to look at things in a new way.

Taken with flash, because barns are dark.

Always a good show here, and just out of reach of thoise who would like to harvest it for Christmas, thankfully. Big clumps can take years to regrow.

This one looks a little battered and worn already.

In my opinion these are vastly superior to the good old dandelion clock, being much more like a many-faceted shape than a sphere.

Hammock web is the generic term used to describe the typical webs of money spiders, in the family Linyphiidae. This is one of the commonest and largest examples, Linyphia triangularis. Unlike other groups of spiders which make sheet-type webs, Linyphiids hand upside down beneth the sheet, and tend to tackle prey from below. i imagine having a sheet between them and the prey gives them protection from dangerous prey and shelter from would-be predators.

Seen at Springdale farm Gwent Wildlife Trust reserve. These are the first occasions that I have ever seen any of the 'non-red/orange' forms of Scarlet Pimpernel. The blue form was initially quite baffling.

Tipula sp, found at Magor marsh reserve.

Yet another example of the beauty of conifers, if you look closely.

...let a spider run alive"

This common garden spider ran until it got tired, having been found in some plants on another stall. These are great for use with children as they are slow, easy to handle, won't bite, and they lay silk lines as they walk so they tickle. This female is on my arm.

Always good to see these migrants, as some years i don't see them at all.

A ladybird on a stinging nettle. HBBBT!

Viola riviniana. The notched spur is visible even if it isn't in focus.

Hedge Woundwort I think, though it is in Magor Marsh so it could be Marsh Woundwort. Not one I am confident with.

Described as a 'bluebell wave' by a friend of mine. Most of the bells are not open, but that gives it the shape that it wouldn't have if they were open.

The alexanders patch at Rogiet Poor Land is literally buzzing with stuff, and this wasp shot came out rather well.

One thing that I find with owls in particular is that it is so easy to focus on their faces that you miss the wonderful patterns of their feathers. This shot was an attempt to show that, but sadly it was also the point when my zoom lens died, but in compensation it does show the lovely shape of the bird.

The best display of these that I have ever seen, although I struggled to get a decent shot of them.

One of Gwent Wildlife Trust's flagship reserves, with some of the finest botanical haymeadows anywhere. A real treat of a place.

When not devouring apples and kiwi furit and running away with carrots, water voles are supposed to eat wild greens like this Typha. It seems that they still do.
