This symbol of the 2012 guild has been placed at the North West corner of Moor Park, at the junction of Blackpool Road and Garstang Road. Presumably it is to greet visitors to Preston arriving from the North. It has been planted with Narcissi and I expect that it will be planted up with other things as the season changes.

With apologies to Picasso, this illustration was for an article I wrote called "Guilded Gun", about the students' Art Guild at LaTech raffling off a rifle at the same time a Virginia Tech student was murdering fellow students.

Confusion marred the climax of the Makerere University cultural gala on Sunday night. It all started after the adjudicators announced Nkobazambogo as the new champions of the cultural gala, which attracted 20 groups.

The announcement didn't go down well with some students, leading to a fist fight, which sucked in Police. The students accused the adjudicators of fraudulently announcing Nkobazambogo as the winners of the gala.

Nkobazambogo collected 657 points beating off stiff competition from the 2015 defending champions Abasoga-Nseete with a single point. Shortly after the announcement of the results, those opposed to the results went after the adjudicators, the guild administrators and the Culture and Mobilization Minister, Stuart Lubwama forcing police to lock up him to save him from the angry mob.

The adjudicators and university officials were helped by police to sneak out from University hall, where the gala was held amidst tight security. They included David Mudungu, Emirian Kintu, Paul Luwere, Wilberforce Nkaija, Clara Mukasa and Martha Namasaba

Cyriaco Kabagambe, the Dean of Student, says whereas the gala is aimed at harmonizing the different cultures among students and ensuring that they don't forget their roots, the competition has always become a source of conflict among students.

Cue out: … generate into conflict"//

Stuart Lubwama, the Makerere Guild Culture and Mobilizatio Minister, earlier on told URN that this year's cultural gala was intended to inspire students to appreciate their roots as well as working on their behaviors.

"He who doesn't know where he is coming from, cannot claim to know where he is going. If you realize, youth today have deliberately opted to act contrary to their cultural values, norms and practices and in turn have abandoned our heritage all in disguise of globalization. They think our traditional cultures are outdated, antique and archaic," Lubwama said.

With set pieces (anthems) folk songs, and poems marking day one of the two-day gala, the Basoga-Nseete was screened and on two occasions, it was discovered that some participants were non-students and were bounced. This caused panic and discomfort among the group, despite this, the day ended well without other disruptions.

The event was sealed off by the final dance by the Bagwere amidst heavy security provided by police. Organized, under the theme, "What Went wrong" the two-day competition entailed various activities including the Makerere Anthem, East African Anthem, and Culture Anthem, Original composition, traditional folk song, dance, drama and poems.

The window was donated by a group of parishioners and the glass is by Harry Grylls of Burlison & Grylls of London.
