Girl Guideillicious!!!!!!
Our guides told us that if everybody could go and see him whenever they wanted it would be chaos. Therefore people are 'invited' (or forced, depends on how you look at it) to go there a year or so beforehand. The women are all dressed in their traditional Korean dresses (hanbok) and the men all wear the same suit (in the typical Kim Il Sung/Kim Jong Il style). The tourists and the North Koreans are kept apart and use different conveyor belts. Strangely enough we seemed to be allowed to go first, while they had to wait.
Guide House - Paradise - Mount Rainier National Park.
The Paradise Guide House was built in 1920 by the Rainier National Park Company, and is the park's only building with a gambrel roof.
"Our Department will repair the Paradise Guide House. This registered National Landmark is a must-stop for mountain climbers before trekking to the summit. Age and neglect have left the building's foundation slumping and crumbling. Just one old stairwell provides fire escape for the three-story structure. I'm happy to say, on behalf of President Bush, help is on the way" -remarks prepared for delivery by Interior Secretary Gale Norton - Mount Rainier National Park - July 25th, 2001. Renovation completed in 2005.
We left Marrakech behind us and started the first leg of our road trip in the High Atlas Mountains. Skit has pretty much the only photo we took from that bit in her stream so I will jump ahead to the next stretch- the road of a thousand kasbahs.
Aït Benhaddou was the only location where we accepted a local guide though this was kind of not through choice- we didn't really know what we were doing. We had read so many scare stories about cars being broken into that we handed cash over to the nearest local we could see when we parked. And when Assan (?) started to take us on a tour, we kind of just went along with it and spent the next half hour worried about how much to pay. Still, he didn't actually disappoint in showing us the place and it was somewhat nice to speak to a local. I think I gathered from him that a few people still live here but most abandoned the place to move to the other side of the river. It seemed rational to just start afresh rather than maintain aging buildings though it is very different from the UK where such a thing is not possible.

OK even by Avril's own admission this link is tenuous, but Lenin was known for his beliefs in and adherence to Marxist ideals and this was a way of introducing a notable black Marxist, Claudia Jones.
Claudia Jones was born in Trinidad and emigrated to the United States with her parents, aged 9. She soon became aware of the injustices suffered by poor Americans - especially black Americans - and developed an affinity with Marxism. This brought her into conflict with the American Establishment, and in 1948 she was deported - although she managed to persuade the authorities to send her to the United Kingdom, as she was inspired by the post-war Labour Government and particularly the setting up of the National Health Service (she herself had a chronic medical condition which would require lifelong treatment). She joined the Communist party of Great Britain.
Jones also established a newspaper, the "West Indian World". This reported on global black issues which were mostly ignored by the mainstream media. She also publicised activities in the then-small and dispersed black communities in London and elsewhere. Following the murder of the black carpenter Kelso Cochrane in Notting Hill in 1958 - a crime for which no-one was charged despite several people claiming to know who was responsible - she brought the idea of Trinidadian Carnival to London, hiring a hall in Kings Cross and turning it over to a celebration of black culture and pride. Initially an indoor event, this would grow and eventually become the Notting Hill Carnival when it moved out onto the streets in the 1970s. Sadly Jones did not live to see this, as she succumbed to her illness at the end of 1964.

Guiding on a nice day, not too hot or humid, July 4th, 2011, at the Saline Depot Museum
I am using my new electronic book reader, finding it a great positive change in my life.
Every year, the open air museum just outside of the small Danish town of Holbaek is transformed. Over the course of the day the Nazi's invade Denmark, the small open air museum/town undergoes years of occupation, and then eventually is liberated just before sunset.
All of the actors are incredible. The experience is immersive and leaves you with goose bumps. You have aircraft flying over head, the sound of machine gun fire, minorities being rounded up, SS officers marching in the streets.
To make the day even more meaningful, I was joined by a Danish friend and his grandmother who is 90. In her late teens during the invasion, she shared with me stories of the occupation as I picked her brain (through my friend as I don't speak Danish and she doesn't speak English).
Afterwards we retired to his Great Aunt's house where they shared additional stories and pulled out old ration cards, shared my friend's father's resistance armband, and chatted with me about how Denmark has changed since they were children.
You can view footage from the battle here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1sLS37idu4
The event is held here: adlbn.dk/ at Andelslandsbyen Nyvang.
