TITAN II GUIDANCE COMPUTER
This onboard computer accepted position data from the Inertial Measurement Unit and calculated the resulting guidance commands during the flight of the missile.
TITAN II INERTIAL MEASUREMENT UNIT (IMU)
Titan II IMUs contained a set of free-floating gyroscopes, which, along with accelerometers, a computer, and other devices, kept a missile on course to its target.
---------------
Delco Magic 352 missile guidance computer (MGC) and Carousel IV inertial measurement unit (IMU) served as the guidance system for the Titan II missile. It was later modified to the Universal Space Guidance System (USGS) and used on the Titan III-C space launch system. The IMU sent information regarding velocity and attitude of the missile to the MGC, which would send steering commands to the engine. Both elements were mounted between the fuel and oxidizer tanks inside stage 2 of the missile.
UNLV’s Public History Program and University Libraries Bring Culinary Union History to the Community -
LAS VEGAS, NV - The graduate students of the Public History Program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the UNLV University Libraries have teamed up to present an exhibit that captures the important history of one of the nation’s most recognizable unions, the Culinary Workers Union, Local 226, the largest local of UNITE HERE. “Line in the Sand: The People, Power, and Progress of the Culinary Union” is open to the public and will be on display from Dec. 5, 2014, through April 1, 2015, on the first floor of UNLV’s Lied Library.
This exhibit is the product of growing partnership that was forged between the Culinary Union and UNLV two years ago. Last spring, the Culinary Union invited students of UNLV’s Public History Program, under the guidance of Dr. Deirdre Clemente, to explore its storage sheds and closets to learn more about the largest union in Nevada. There, students discovered hidden treasures - various display objects such as banners, buttons, t-shirts, picket signs, photographs, and personal memorabilia just waiting to be curated and shared with the public for the first time.
The objects, however, represent only part of the Culinary Union’s rich history of nearly 80 years. The exhibit would continue to take shape as the stories of union members were gathered by students under the tutelage of UNLV Libraries’ Oral History Research Center (OHRC) Director Claytee White and facilitated by Bethany Khan, Director of Digital Strategy for the Culinary Union.
Oral histories containing stories from the 1960s to present day breathe additional life into the objects displayed behind the glass and provide insight into the experiences of those who have been part of the Culinary Union and Las Vegas’ world famous hospitality industry. Sound bites from union members and leaders will be available through QR codes that can be activated by visitors’ smartphones as they walk through the exhibit, adding another dimension to the experience of “Line in the Sand.”
UNLV celebrates the innovative collaboration with the Culinary Union that has enabled the history of Nevada’s largest labor organization to be shared with the greater Southern Nevada community through this dynamic exhibit.
“Central to the mission of the UNLV Libraries is to collect materials and oral histories that document Southern Nevada,” said Patricia Iannuzzi, Dean of the UNLV University Libraries. “The story of this region cannot be told without the voices and materials of its workers. UNLV Libraries and our Oral History Research Center are proud to help facilitate this wonderful student-led project.”
The exhibit will also highlight the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas, an internationally recognized model for labor-management cooperation, workplace education and vocational training, and the Culinary Health Fund, which provides medical coverage for over 120,000 participants in Nevada
“Line in the Sand” is presented in cooperation with the Culinary Union, the Bartenders Union, UNLV University Libraries, the College of Liberal Arts, the Nevada State Museum, and the Las Vegas News Bureau.
Located just one hour from Porto, this landmark Palace originally opened in 1910. Today, under the guidance of the renowned Portuguese architect, Alvaro Siza Vieira, the resort is reborn – the renovation work focused on preserving the architectural heritage of the building whilst bringing the facilities into the 21st century. In the summer of 2010, Vidago Palace was reopened and took its place amongst the great historical European Resorts. Vidago Palace boasts 70 rooms and suites, one of the best 18-hole golf courses in Europe and a world class ‘Vidago’ spa with 20 treatment rooms in a newly modernized wing. The spa benefits from the natural mineral waters of Vidago springs as well as the luxury brand of Espa.

GUIDANCE and FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEMS for the TITAN INTER-CONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILE
FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM (FCS)
The FCS consists of the Autopilot Package and the Rate Gyro Package. Basically the FCS receives guidance steering signals from the MGS and converts them to stabilized control during Stage 1 and Stage II powered flight.
INERTIAL MEASUREMENT UNIT (IMU)
contains pre-programmed tape of planned fight and target information. Senses missile position, attitude and velocity deviations and relays data to the MGC
MISSILE GUIDANCE COMPUTER (MGC)
evaluates inputs from the IMU and recomputes azimuth, attitude and velocity requirements, sending corrective signals to the fight control system. Also computes and transmits discrete signals causing various airborne actions to occur.
NOTE: The descriptive material on this diagram is that of the Universal Space Guidance System (USGS): which replaced the original system in use from 1962 until 1978 The IMU, displayed in the case [to the side, the gold one], was from the earlier guidance set. Both sets function on exactly the same principle. However the USGS is far more efficient due to the availability of newer technology
ACCESSORY POWER SUPPLY (APS)
battery supplies 28 volt DC current for most of missile's in-flight requirements, including guidance and flight control systems.
VERNIER HYDRAULIC POWER SUPPLY (VHPS)
battery supplies 28 volt DC current for Stage II hydraulic systems, ordnance components and motor driven switches.
NOTE: Both the APS and VHPS battery are stored dry on board the missile and are activated with electrolite during the one-minute launch countdown

Our minder and we say goodbye to our tour guide after she tells us she hopes we "have a greater appreciation for her country" since visiting.

I got an email last night that I had been expecting. My company has vast experience in disaster response and we have been asked to estimate how many people we can provide.
I personally have experience in disaster response. In fact, I've been subsequently trained to lead response efforts. I am an engineer and planner. I could do good.
But... the trauma and tragedy is overwhelming. It is one thing to send a text to a number and donate $10. It is quite another to be face to face with the sights and smells of a disaster. The grieving. The hurting, the needy. The dead and decaying. Day after day, 15, 18, 20 hours a day.
I know that He'll equip me if He sends me, but that doesn't remove the self-doubts. Is he sending me? Is that a whisper that I hear?
