Happy Birthday to the lovely Staci. Your words and picture the other night made me look at this photo of Ella in a whole new way. Thank you. x

The first of the sunflowers that Charlotte and I planted all those weeks ago is going to open soon.

This is a symbolic photo for today, as it was Charlotte's Reception induction today at her school. We had come home and Charlotte asked why the petals were all curled up. I explained how as they grow they uncurl and become beautiful sunflowers - and then I cried at the relevance.

My tiny girl isn't so tiny anymore.

2 years ago I think, maybe 3? Drove by this field every day for at least 2 years and sometimes, the field was full of crimson clover. I finally stopped and Sadie was with me as were our props: yellow dress and cheap hat. She’s so cute!

Come September and my baby goes into Reception Class. When did my tiny baby grow up so fast? I so glad she made it back for her final week of nursery though, would have been awful for her to miss it.

This is a common pose for her at the moment. She loves to sit quietly drawing and writing.

Love you (and your little big brother) so much!

The little girl lives in a home that is substandard compared to other homes. Her home has no running water or indoor plumbing. Black, dirty coal heats the small, four room house. It is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. She sits and watches the thin curtains moving back and forth from the wind coming in the cracks of the house. But, for this little girl, she doesn't know how poor she really is. Her home may not be filled with heat or water, but it is filled with love.

She goes to bed in her cold bedroom, which she shares with other members of her family, and crawls under the weight of the many quilts that have been hand-made and placed on her bed to keep her warm. She does not fall asleep until her little body warms her cold mattress. Once warm, she falls asleep to dream about a better life, a better home, and awakens to know that one day she will make it. She will be someone who will make a difference in the lives of other people. She will work harder than everyone else to overcome. She has the grit. She will never stop until she reaches that dream and she will never forget. Never.

That home still stands today, although uninhabitable. The little girl only thinks about that home in her dreams. It's harder to remember everything about her home. The house is only a symbol, a memory, a beginning. The little girl has grown up now and looks back with fond memories, knowing that without that home and her dreams, she would not be who she is today.

I love how her eyes look in this. She watched me snap the Polaroid of her brother with the ring pop and all she had was a bowl of pretzels but it worked.

What can I say about young burrowing owlets that I haven't said before? Probably not much ... but my love for them has no boundaries for sure. How I yearn to find some burrowing owls in western Colorado, but in reality I know that it won't be the same as the owls in Florida. But, of course, I still want to find them. ;-)

The young owlets of Florida are a class of their own. So stinking adorable in their looks, their expressions, and their moves. Yes, they grow up way to fast (sound familiar to all of you parents out there?), but their journey to adulthood is a fascinating one. I see so many parallels between their journey and our own babies journey... the look of adoration between the parent and young ... the calling out for help when needed ... the begging for food or affection/attention ... the self discovery of body parts and how they work and what they do ... and finally the exerting of independence when the time has come. Yep, eventually this cutie will fly off for a life of their own. Such a sad and proud moment.

However, there's always the promise of next years babies and that's what makes it all OK for me. :-)

Thanks so much for stopping by to view. Happy Tuesday!

Taken while the sun was beginning to set behind the nest, while giving off that golden glow, this pair of sibling great white egret chicks engage each other at the nest.

After spending 4 days at the Alligator Farm in St. Augustine, there were oh so many images to share. It was my first time there and we were lucky enough to get in before the hoards (no exaggeration) of photographers and visitors arrived on scene ... and also stayed longer at the end of the day. Not surprisingly, that's when the majority of the images featured here and on the blog posts were taken.

I hadn't spent too much time at rookeries before I presume. I saw things that I know are nature's way, but hard to watch. Life as a newborn, for any of the species, can be difficult. Competing for food, fighting with its nest mates, balancing themselves within the nest and not falling into the alligator-infested waters below, taking that first attempts at flying ... all very challenging. However, the springtime activities at the rookery were amazing and the birds never looked so beautiful, the chicks so adorable. Yes, spring was in the air. :-)

This week, the blog post features more burrowing owls ... young ones growing up in sunny south Florida. :-) Before I forget, just click the link to read more:

Beside bears, I think that most people know that I absolutely LOVE owls ... all species of owls, though none hold my heartstrings as tight as the burrowing owls. They possess this ability to brighten my day like nothing else. The young ones especially, for they are constantly learning every minute, every step they take, and observation they make ... it all gets the wheel turning for them and we observe this so easily when photographing them.

One of the biggest things that I miss (other than my friends and family) are these adorable youngsters. I missed them so much that I just had to partake in a return trip to spend time with them (and a few more things that called us "home"). I imagine that I will always do that. :-)

Well, happy Friday everyone! We have some non-photography related things to do tomorrow, but then we're heading out east to visit with some friends of the human and fur kind. Just a couple of days. Thanks for stopping by to view and again, please feel free to visit the blog as well.

My 4 year old grand daughter concentrating on the contents of an Easter basket. I taught her to start eating a chocolate bunny with the ears (a skill she will surely need for the rest of her life).

Well, Friday night was prom night for the last time in household. My daughter, third from the left in blue, and her girls had a great time. As a photographer, I wished it was a little cloudier, as the light was hard, but they enjoyed the weather. Don't they look stunning!

#42/100

This weeks blog is all about the eastern screech owl. Not just any ESO, but an urban family which raised a baby owlet not far from my home. To read more about it and see the accompanying images, click the link: www.tnwaphotography.wordpress.com.

From the time that Tom placed this little guy back into its cavity nest, I fell in love with this owlet. See, it was found by a neighbor after falling out of its nest. Though I'm sure that the parents, who always remained nearby, would have taken care of it, there was always the great chance that the bird of prey would have been predated on by the neighborhood outdoor cats.

Each day, I would go and check on it - from afar of course - and I tried to document (without disturbing them) its growth. Was there a happy ending to this familiar family of 3? You'll have to check it out at www.tnwaphotography.wordpress.com.

Thanks so much for stopping by to view and I appreciate everyone's patience with me. I have been dealing with some health issues regarding an immediate family member, which has been limiting my time. Photography has always been my outlet for keeping everything in perspective and it continues to be so.

#52 Weeks: The 2021 Edition

#Week 20: Children

This is a picture of the Rideau canal in my hometown of Ottawa. The leaves are changing, the canal is low. It's time for another winter, and it feels like summer had just begun.

The pixel sorting in this picture attempts to signify the quickening passage of time as we grow older, and how things that were once familiar seem different, before we realize the change is in us.

This is a portrait I took of one of the family six cygnets I have been watching since they hatched. A beautiful bird..

Tomorrow night, a new blog post will be published, so I thought that I would share another from the current one ... featuring the burrowing owls of Florida.

While we're all sort of accustomed to viewing images of the burrowing owls on the ground near the burrow ... whether that be in the sand or the grasses. However, in Florida, where there are trees nearby, they often spread their wings and venture up into the nearby trees.

On this particular day in 2017, I remember that it was quite windy and these young burrowing owls had their work cut out for them. Flying as high as about 10-12 feet on to the top of this bushy leaved tree, it appears that the real estate is a bit crowded. LOL It is simply a joy to see them as they literally grow up before your eyes and ready for life on their own. Gosh, I'll say it again ... I miss them so much.

We've been away a bit lately, but now back for at least a few weeks. Thanks for your patience and for stopping by to view. :-)

Life is full of surprises, some good, others bad. Try keeping things in perspective, and explore opportunities to solve one problem a time. Stay positive, and look up... you might see life in a different way!

Grow, but never grow up.

Spread your roots deep into the ground, but the head must remain above the clouds.

Grow old as your hair turns gray with experience, but the heart must stay young.

Spring in Knoxville.

Petals is trying out her wings! I swear it was only a couple weeks ago and she had stubs for wings and now just look at her!!! I saw her fly today, literally fly with her Mother Polly! I had tears in my eyes I could barely even focus! (Not that I'm having trouble with focusing anyways!).

I am thankful to Mother Nature, that I have been able to follow this Piping Plover family and watch the three babies grow up healthy and obviously happy. I have sorrow in my heart for Pickles -- God bless Pickles. Paco and Peaches are doing well for those who are following!

I just can't believe they got so big!

"Every child is born blessed with a vivid imagination. But just as a muscle grows flabby with disuse, so the bright imagination of a child pales in later years if he ceases to exercise it."

have you ever in life been told to be too old for something? or that you've outgrown that stage when you're watching kids' tv shows? I have. many, many times. and I refuse to agree with people. I think there is no such point in life when kids should be turned into adults, letting go of what they love and changing who they are just because they've reached a certain age. society tells us too much anyways when to grow up, when to no longer watch Disney movies, and when to say good bye to your childish self. to me, growing up is about getting to know how to be responsible about what you're doing, to learn how to handle things yourself. but it doesn't go hand in hand with forgetting about imagination, childhood memories, and just being a child from time to time. I will never in my life stop watching Disney movies, and I will continue drinking hot chocolate out of my 101 Dalmatians mug with a straw, nobody will ever keep me from having fun in bouncing castles, and I will forever laugh about whatever cherishes my mind - I will never say good bye to my inner child, no matter what age I'll turn.

the concept above goes to me so well with growing up and being torn between childhood and the time when we are told to take on responsibilities instead of finding ourselves still in imaginary worlds. we find ourselves being pulled out of that worlds, only few decide to hold on to what they should later think about their most carefree and happiest times of their lives. this is actually the first concept I've been happy with in a long, long time. and yes, it may be grainy and the processing is far from being perfect, but I love it. and to me it brings across exactly what I wanted to say with it.

Part two of the series. For this shot, I focused on her being more sad than angry. While sadness and anger are considered, for the most part, opposite emotions, I actually think the two are tied together very closely. As the title suggests, the theme of this photograph was a lost or forgotten childhood and was meant to represent children with difficult lives. And I think when a child is faced with a difficult life.... or anyone for that matter, they become either one of the two, angry or sad.... Or they become a horrible mix of both.

I seriously want to replace this with the BW version. In fact, I already did (then switched back. I'm the most indecisive person ever :P) because I want to re-edit the B&W before I do.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Update: I re-edited this photo. Looking back at my old work I was dissatisfied with the finished product. I like it much better now.
