The Green Thorntail is described as an uncommon hummingbird that is found from Costa Rica to the pacific slopes of Ecuador. At the bird lodge we visited in Mindo, Ecuador, there were several perching and feeding in the area. This male shows the long tail feathers that give the bird its name.

This picture was taken in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in Costa Rica.

Size: Approx. 4 to 6mm

Distribution: Found throughout the UK

Months seen: April to October

Habitat: Usually found on low growing bushes and in hedgerows

Food: Flies and other small insects

Special features: Green Orb-weavers, as the name suggests, have a bright green abdomen and a yellow or reddish coloured head. Just above the spinners (the tail end) they have a bright red spot. This is more obvious on young spiders and can only be seen from underneath the spider.

Despite their almost fluorescent colour the Green Orb-weavers can remain very well camouflaged amongst vegetation. It's only when they stray from their normal habitat they get noticed. Green orb-weavers are a common native species found throughout the UK and northern Europe.

Green Cove Station was a rail stop along the Virginia Creeper railroad that ran from Abingdon, Virginia to Todd, North Carolina. Built by the Virginia Carolina railroad about 1914, it also served as a post office, general store, and telegraph office, managed primarily by William M. Buchanan. Famed photographer O. Winston Link memorialized this building in his 1956 photo "Maud Bows to the Virginia Creeper" (you can see this print by doing an internet search). The last train passed here in 1977, but the station remained as a general store for a few more years. In the early 1990s, the former station was restored as a U.S. Forest Service visitor and education center for the Virginia Creeper National Recreational Trail.

I decided to make my favorite juicing recipe into a green smoothie. Two apples, 1 meyer lemon, 4-5 leaves of kale, water, and ice.

The other half is in my tummy. Yummy yummy.

I won this jar o' green candy by guessing the number of pieces it contained! Unfortunately, all the candy in there kinda sucked.

H.L. Green was a chain of variety stores that may have been limited to the South. Green's was ultimately merged into the McCrory conglomerate of variety stores, which caused the remaining Green's stores to shutter when McCrory's finally bottomed-out circa 2000. The old Downtown Atlanta store seems to be in pretty decent shape and I believe it's on the historic register.

This is the "Green Gable" from Zephrknits.com I modified the bottom of it by echoing the lace portion featured in the neckline. Since this photo, blocking has added a bit of length to it, it's perfect!
