Barn circa 1910 but this may be its last year; half of roof has been blown back onto itself and hand-hewn beams supporting floor are half-rotted on west side. This is view looking due west so most of destruction is hidden here. Sky was weird gray haze that bounced sunlight everywhere.
Taken as b&w and contrast bumped up a smidge more; contrast has never been my strong suit unfortunately, so I just revised this pic.
I took a photo of myself when I was about 17, wearing glasses and looking down. I cropped it to a ratio that would relate to a 2ft by 4ft piece of plywood. I primed it with several coats. I used a graph on the photo and the board. I used 3 layers in my process. The 1st layer: I took the average gray in each square on the photo and painted it into the corresponding square on the board. The 2nd layer: I took the lightest gray/white in each square and painted a smaller block in each corresponding square. The 3rd layer: I made even smaller spots with the darkest shade.
I had been inspired by Chuck Close, whom I'd originally discovered through my freshmen art teacher in High School. It was in my Junior/Senior years that I orchestrated this piece with a newfound interest in Chuck's work after meeting a very charming Eric Sutherland. He would tell me about his idol Phillip Glass and recognizing the name I would mention Chuck Close, and Eric and I would revel in our reaffirmed love of the two artists. Being a student at the Manhattan School of Music, he would go on to compose a score based on inspiration conjured up by Phillip Glass and I would go on to create a conceptual self portrait with the inspiration fueled by an artist that wouldn't even let paralysis get in his way of creating brilliant pieces of art.
A deeper look into the painting: Not being able to see someone in the painting close up, expressed how I felt like dissappearing throughout most of my adolescence. The grayscale hinted at the simplicity that I wanted to achieve in my life.
In looking at something differently, we see things we'd never seen before, even if it was there to begin with. Taking a few steps back, or looking at the piece through a certain lens, you begin to see an outline, you see the face, it takes shape, and finally you are left with something that takes on a whole new depth.
I hope to leave the viewer with a yearning to look at things objectively, the optimism of expecting anything, and the pleasure of viewing something that hopefully took their mind for a little jog!
