An hour and a half after sunrise and much heavier fog than I had expected. I don't think I've ever seen a male Northern Harrier perched for so long, fluffed up against the cold. Took me a while to wrap my brain around the ID.
My wife's family was visiting from out of state. We decided to visit Southport, NC on Saturday. Photo taken from the shore of the Cape Fear River in Southport. Near the end of our visit, a Brunswick County Sheriff boat accompanied a tow boat towing a sailboat.
Lylah decided that the whole retrieving the fish thing was cool!
They will retrieve practically anything! This was one of the smaller fish too, they were ugly & huge!

The preceding sticker works well to grab your attention because the brite pink contrasts highly with the drab gray sign back. These black and white stickers are all but lost in the gray.
Speaking of which, the ugly battleship gray paint here is the work of Fred Radtke, a frustrated artist whose attempts at grafitti can only be seen as amateurish at best. Radtke claims to be "helping" to fight graffiti with his pathetic slatherings of Battleship Gray, but he actually creates more graffiti than he covers. Writers and stickers actively seek out Radtke's gray blobs as they create near perfect frames to showcase their work. To date, Radtke has inspired more artists than he has stopped and he has actually slopped more paint on public spaces than the most prolific writers could ever hope to.
Keep up the good work Fred!

My first ever Great Gray Owl! I've been hoping to see one for many years, and finally saw one on my recent trip to Yellowstone National Park. Early edit.
One of the last birds I saw for the day and it was the best. The light was right and he flew right in front of us.
A special thanks to the park employee at Hayward Shoreline Winton Avenue. He was kind enough to come looking for us to let us know the gates closed at 5:00 pm. It was almost 5:45 when he found us. I didn't get his name, but I really appreciated him looking for us. I know that won't happen again. Whew.
A red-winged blackbird chasing away a much larger northern harrier. I'm guessing there is a nest nearby.
This male Northern Harrier was flying around a property I was watching, and he almost gave me a couple of good pix. But I have had not had much luck photographing the Gray Ghost, so I'm keeping them.
